B002A: Right Curtain Deployment Control 2 (Subfault)
A fault in the second firing circuit for the right curtain airbag. The first question is architectural rather than electrical — this code can only be genuine on a vehicle whose curtain is fired through two channels, and the second channel usually lives at the rear of the roof rail, not the front.

What does B002A mean?
Before treating this as a wiring problem, confirm the vehicle has the wiring in question.
A second right curtain deployment circuit exists only on designs that fire the curtain through more than one channel. Plenty of vehicles do not. Long-wheelbase estates, minivans and three-row utilities commonly carry a curtain long enough that it is split into separately fired zones, and some vehicles stage a single curtain in two steps rather than two places. Many others fire the whole thing on one loop and have no second circuit at all. If B002A is stored on a vehicle whose service data shows a single-loop right curtain, you are not looking at a broken wire — you are looking at a restraints module carrying the wrong calibration, which happens after a module is replaced or reprogrammed with software intended for a different trim or market. That check takes minutes and prevents a long search for hardware nobody fitted.
Once the architecture is confirmed, the second circuit's identity tells you where to look, and it is a different part of the vehicle from the primary loop. Where the first channel serves the forward section over the front-seat head zone and terminates at the A-pillar, a second channel commonly serves the rear section over the second and third-row seating positions, with its connector and run further back along the roof rail — at the C-pillar, the D-pillar, or in the cargo-area trim. Confirm the specific layout against the service data, because it varies, but the direction of travel is consistent: this is a rear-of-vehicle inspection, not a windscreen-area one.
That relocation brings a different set of causes with it. Rear pillar and cargo trim comes off for third-row seat work, for luggage cover and cargo net fitment, for rear speaker installation and for tailgate or hatch strut replacement — all common jobs that never go near the A-pillar. And the rear of a roof rail collects water the front does not: a perished rear screen seal, a blocked sunroof drain terminating at the back of the headliner, or a roof rack foot mounted through the rail all let moisture reach the loop connector at the one end of the vehicle where it can pool.
One measurement caution specific to this code. On a staged design the two loops are not necessarily specified alike, because they can drive inflators of different size or configuration. Comparing loop 2's resistance against loop 1's reading and concluding the higher one is faulty is a real way to condemn a good airbag. Compare each against its own published figure.
The code-pairing rule is worth applying too. B002A and B0029 stored together are unlikely to be two independent failures in one curtain. What the two loops share is the module connector, the ground and, on many layouts, a common route through the pillar — so a both-loops fault should send you to what they have in common rather than to either circuit alone.
As with any deployment loop, this circuit ends in a pyrotechnic device. Follow the manufacturer's power-down and wait procedure, use only equipment approved for airbag measurement, and leave it to a qualified technician if either is unavailable.
Common causes
- Restraints module carrying a calibration for a two-loop curtain the vehicle does not have
- Connector disturbed during third-row seat, cargo trim or rear speaker work
- Water reaching the rear roof-rail connector from a perished rear screen seal or a blocked sunroof drain
- Corrosion at a roof rack mounting point where it penetrates the rail
- Rear section curtain inflator with out-of-specification resistance
- Loop wiring damaged along the rear pillar route or during rear-end collision repair
- Shared module connector or ground fault, which typically sets both right curtain codes at once
Symptoms
- Airbag / SRS warning lamp on
- B002A stored with a symptom byte describing the electrical condition of the loop
- Rear-zone curtain protection potentially disabled while the forward section remains armed
- Companion code B0029 stored alongside when the fault is in something both loops share
- Fault appearing after third-row, cargo area or rear glass work
- No effect at all on starting, running or drivability
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm from service data that this vehicle actually fires its right curtain through two circuits. A B002A on a single-loop vehicle is a calibration problem, not a wiring problem.
- 2.If the module was recently replaced or reprogrammed, verify the software matches this vehicle's trim and market before inspecting any hardware.
- 3.Read the symptom byte. Open, short to ground, short to power and out-of-range resistance are four different searches.
- 4.Identify where the second loop's connector actually sits on this model — commonly at a rear pillar or in the cargo trim rather than at the A-pillar.
- 5.Ask what rear-of-vehicle work has been done. Third-row seats, cargo covers, rear speakers and hatch struts all disturb the trim covering this circuit.
- 6.With the system disabled per procedure and the specified wait observed, inspect the rear connector for water staining and corrosion, and check the rear screen seal, sunroof drain outlet and any roof rack penetrations above it.
- 7.Measure the loop against its own published specification rather than against loop 1. Staged designs do not necessarily specify the two circuits identically.
- 8.If both B0029 and B002A are present, test the shared module connector and ground first — one common fault is far likelier than two failures in the same curtain.
Repair cost

Recalibrating a module that was programmed for the wrong configuration is $100 to $300 and fixes the cases where the second loop never existed. A corroded rear-pillar connector repaired is $150 to $400, plus whatever the water source costs to cure — a blocked sunroof drain or a rear screen seal is a separate job. Replacing a curtain assembly to cure a failed rear-zone inflator means dropping the headliner and runs $600 to $1,500. Module replacement with programming is $400 to $900.
