What does B0039 mean?
The restraints control module tests the resistance of every firing loop it owns, using a current small enough to be harmless. B0039 means the loop for the first stage of the right-hand second-row frontal airbag returned a value outside the accepted band. The symptom byte attached to the code identifies whether the reading was an open, a short to power, a short to ground, or simply out of range.
Among the staged codes for a single airbag, this is the one that matters most, and it is worth being clear about why. A multi-stage airbag does not choose between its stages arbitrarily. Stage 1 is the base charge — it fires in essentially every deployment the module ever commands, from a moderate impact upwards. The higher stages are supplements added on top when severity, occupant size or belt status calls for more force. So a fault in the third stage removes capability only at the extreme end of the crash spectrum, while a fault in stage 1 affects the deployments that actually happen. On many designs a first-stage loop that cannot fire means that airbag contributes nothing at all in a typical collision, because the event never reaches the severity at which the later stages would have been commanded anyway.
That reframing changes the urgency. All restraints faults deserve prompt attention, but where a technician has a queue of them to work through, the first-stage loops earn priority over the upper stages on the same bag. It is also why a stage 1 code appearing alone, with stages 2 and 3 reading normally, is a genuinely useful finding: it rules out the shared connector and ground, since a shared-path fault would have taken the other stages down with it. A stage 1 code in isolation points at that particular initiator, or at the short section of circuit unique to it.
The converse is equally informative. If stage 1 sets together with the other stages, the shared items become the likely culprit — one connector, one ground, one airbag assembly explains three codes far more economically than three simultaneous initiator failures, and the diagnosis should start at the common connection rather than at the bag.
One caution applies before any of this. A frontal airbag for a rear seating position is not fitted to most vehicles, and generic scan tool definitions will happily print a description for a code number the vehicle has no hardware for. Confirming from manufacturer service data that this vehicle actually carries a multi-stage second-row frontal airbag should come before anything is ordered.

- Connector under or behind the second-row right seat corroded, unlatched or backed out
- Harness damage along the seat frame from seat travel, folding or cargo

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Note carefully whether the other stages of this same airbag have also set codes. Stage 1 alone exonerates the shared connector and ground; all three together implicates them, and this determines where the diagnosis begins.
- 2.Record the full symptom byte before clearing anything, since open, short-to-power and short-to-ground lead to different parts of the circuit.
- 3.Confirm from manufacturer service data that this vehicle actually has a multi-stage second-row frontal airbag rather than trusting a generic code definition.
- 4.Disable the restraints system to the manufacturer's procedure and observe the specified waiting period before disconnecting anything.
- 5.Prioritise this fault over upper-stage faults on the same bag when scheduling the repair, because stage 1 is the charge that fires in ordinary deployments.
- 6.Inspect the connector for corrosion, unlatched housings, backed-out terminals and an unreleased shorting bar.
- 7.Measure the loop resistance against the manufacturer's specification using an approved airbag meter, never a general-purpose one.
- 8.Work the seat through its full range while monitoring, to catch a marginal connection that reads correctly at rest.
- 9.After repair, clear the code and confirm the warning light performs its bulb check and then extinguishes, rather than simply never illuminating.

Diagnostic time on a restraints code runs $100 to $200 and is unavoidable, because the symptom byte and the resistance measurement are what direct everything else. A connector or harness repair adds $100 to $350. Where the stage 1 initiator itself has failed, the whole airbag assembly is replaced — individual charges are not serviceable — which puts the job at $400 to $900 or higher on a rear frontal installation. There is a cost note specific to this code: because a lone stage 1 fault has already ruled out the shared connector and ground, it is more likely than the upper-stage codes to end in an assembly replacement rather than a cheap wiring fix, and it is fair to set expectations accordingly.
