B009B: Left Side Restraints Sensor 5 (Subfault)
A left flank restraints sensor is not reporting acceptably. The question that decides this whole diagnosis is what kind of sensor it is, because two completely different technologies are used in these positions and one of them fails for reasons that have nothing to do with electronics.

What does B009B mean?
B009B is a hexadecimal body code stored by the airbag control module — the character after B009 is the letter B, not a digit — and it names one of the satellite restraint sensors distributed along the left side of the vehicle.
What is worth knowing before opening anything is that side restraint sensing is done two entirely different ways, and the two share almost nothing except the connector. The first is an accelerometer: a small sensing element bolted rigidly to structure, which measures how violently that structure decelerates. The second is a pressure satellite, and it works on a principle that surprises people. A door is a sealed box. When the outer skin is struck hard enough to deform, the air trapped inside that box is compressed, and the pressure spike arrives within a couple of milliseconds — considerably faster than the structural shock wave reaches an accelerometer mounted further inboard. A pressure satellite reads that spike. It is a barometer, not an accelerometer, and manufacturers use them precisely because they buy the module a few extra milliseconds of warning in a side impact, where there is almost no crush space to work with.
That difference matters enormously in the workshop, because a pressure satellite depends on the door cavity actually being sealed. If the vapour barrier or acoustic membrane behind the door card has been peeled back and not properly resealed, if a drain hole is blocked and the cavity has filled with water, if a large aftermarket speaker has been cut into the inner skin, or if a door has been repaired after a dent without the membrane being restored, the sensor sees a pressure environment that no longer behaves the way the calibration expects. It will report faults or implausible readings while being electrically perfect. Every one of those causes is invisible on a meter and none of them is fixed by a new sensor. Aftermarket audio installation and previous door repairs are the two histories worth asking about directly.
If the sensor is an accelerometer instead, none of that applies and the diagnosis is a conventional circuit and mounting investigation. So the first job is identification: service information will state the type, and a pressure satellite is generally mounted to the inner door skin behind the trim rather than to a pillar or rocker.
Either way the vehicle drives normally, and either way the module has probably disabled part of the side restraint function rather than act on data it cannot trust. The system contains pyrotechnic devices and must be safely powered down before any connector is disturbed.
Common causes
- Door vapour barrier or acoustic membrane peeled back, torn or not resealed after previous work, on vehicles using a pressure satellite sensor
- Water sitting in the door cavity because a drain hole is blocked, changing the pressure environment the sensor reads
- Aftermarket speaker or audio installation cut into the inner door skin, breaking the cavity seal
- Door repaired after a dent without the seal being properly restored
- Corroded or water-damaged connector at the sensor
- Wiring damaged where the harness passes through the door hinge boot and flexes with every opening
- Failed sensor
- Open, short or high resistance in the circuit between the sensor and the module
Symptoms
- Airbag or SRS warning light on and staying on
- B009B stored with a symptom byte in the restraints module
- Fault appearing shortly after door trim removal, a door repair or an audio installation
- Fault that comes and goes with wet weather or car washes
- Water audible sloshing in the bottom of the door, if a drain is blocked
- No change at all in engine, transmission or brake behaviour
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Identify the sensor technology first from service information. A pressure satellite and an accelerometer look similar and connect similarly but fail for completely different reasons, and the rest of the diagnosis depends on which one you have.
- 2.Ask what has been done to that door. Trim removal, dent repair and aftermarket speaker installation are the three histories most likely to explain a pressure satellite fault, and none of them will show up on a meter.
- 3.With the system safely disabled per the manufacturer's procedure, remove the door card and inspect the vapour barrier or acoustic membrane. It must be continuous and properly sealed around its whole perimeter for a pressure sensor to work as designed.
- 4.Check the door drains. Standing water in the cavity changes its pressure behaviour and also attacks the connector directly.
- 5.Inspect the harness where it passes through the hinge boot between the body and the door. This section flexes every time the door is opened and is the most common place for a conductor to break inside intact insulation.
- 6.Examine the connector for corrosion, moisture and backed-out terminals.
- 7.Check supply and ground at the sensor against specification before replacing anything.
- 8.Restore the membrane and seal fully as part of any repair. A door card refitted over a torn barrier will reproduce the fault on a brand new sensor.
Repair cost
$100 – $650
Resealing a vapour barrier and clearing blocked door drains is inexpensive work, often $100 to $250 including the SRS scan time, and it resolves a meaningful share of pressure satellite faults with no part at all. A harness repair at the hinge boot is $150 to $400 because access is awkward. A sensor replacement with the required system checks is $250 to $550. SRS diagnostic time is usually $100 to $200 on its own, and all of this is professional work.
