What these codes mean
Software incompatibility codes are a different species from the rest of the network catalogue, and reading them as ordinary faults sends people down the wrong path entirely. Nothing here is broken. The hardware is healthy, the network is working, and every module is talking. The problem is that two modules are running software versions that were never validated to work together, and one of them has recognised the mismatch and said so.
That is almost always the aftermath of service rather than of failure. A control module was replaced with a unit carrying a different software level. A programming or update campaign was performed on one module but not the others it depends on. A used or salvage module was fitted and never brought to the vehicle's software level. Occasionally an update was interrupted partway through and left a module in a state that matches nothing.
On a hybrid or electric vehicle this family concerns the battery interface control modules — the units that sit between the high-voltage battery pack and the rest of the vehicle, managing contactors, monitoring cell conditions, and reporting state of charge and available power. The letter A through J indexes which module on packs that use several, which is common on larger packs where groups of modules each have their own interface unit.
The fix is programming, not parts, and that is the single most useful thing to know about these codes. The correct action is to identify every module's current software level, compare against what the manufacturer specifies for that vehicle by VIN, and bring the mismatched unit into line. Replacing hardware in response to a software incompatibility code is an expensive way to arrive back at the same code.
High-voltage systems demand real caution. Battery interface work requires the manufacturer's shutdown procedure, proper insulated tooling, and verification that the system is de-energised before anything is disconnected. This is not a driveway job, and the voltages involved are lethal rather than merely unpleasant.

There is no generic answer, and any source that gives you one is guessing. The letter is assigned by the vehicle manufacturer, and the same letter refers to different physical components on different makes — sometimes on different model years of the same vehicle. The only authoritative source is the wiring diagram or service information for your exact year, make, model and body style.
A manufacturer-specific definition always outranks the generic one. If your make publishes its own meaning for this code, use that and ignore the generic description.
