The third oxygen sensor on Bank 2 has gone silent. The most useful first question is not which meter to reach for — it is what was done to the vehicle recently, because this connector is the one that gets disturbed by other jobs.

What does P0166 mean?

No activity means the controller is seeing a signal that does not move at all. Not a slow signal, not an implausible one — a line that sits at one value indefinitely while the exhaust gas around the sensor is demonstrably changing. Something has stopped the sensor communicating, and the fault is nearly always in the path rather than in the exhaust.

Start with history rather than with instruments, because on Bank 2 that is genuinely the highest-yield question. The bank 2 harness and its connectors sit in the part of the engine bay that everything else has to be moved out of the way of. Rear-bank spark plugs, intake manifold gaskets, transmission work, catalytic converter replacement, exhaust manifold jobs, starter motors on some layouts — all of them involve unclipping, unplugging or pushing aside the bank 2 sensor loom. A connector that was separated to get at something else and then pressed together without latching will work loose within a week of driving. A lead that was moved aside and left resting on a manifold will melt through in a month. If a code like this arrives shortly after any service work, the wiring near where that work happened is the first place to look, not the last.

When you do reach for a meter, the value the line is stuck at tells you a great deal. Many controllers apply a small bias voltage to an oxygen sensor input so they can detect an open circuit, so a line resting steadily at that bias value is close to proof that the sensor is not connected to anything. A line sitting at zero suggests it is connected to ground instead. The point is that the number is diagnostic in itself, and it is available before anything is disassembled.

One caution before condemning the sensor. This position sits behind two catalytic converters in series. By the time the exhaust gas reaches it, the converters have absorbed most of the oxygen variation the engine produced, so a genuinely healthy sensor here reads far calmer than an upstream one ever would. A trace that looks suspiciously flat on a scan tool graph is not automatically a dead sensor — it may be an honest report from a well-behaved aftertreatment system. What sets the code is a complete absence of movement, not a modest one.

  • Connector unlatched or partially separated during unrelated service work
  • Sensor lead damaged, melted or pinched while another repair was carried out nearby
  • Open circuit in the sensor pigtail or the underbody harness run
  • Signal wire shorted to ground, holding the line at zero
  • Failed sensor element producing no output at all
  • Corroded terminals in the connector breaking the signal path
  • Heater failure leaving the element permanently below the temperature at which it can generate a signal

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Establish what work has been done to the vehicle recently. Anything involving the rear bank, the intake manifold, the exhaust or the transmission puts hands on this harness, and disturbed wiring is the leading cause here.
  2. 2.Visually follow the sensor lead from the connector back into the loom, looking for a connector that is not fully latched, a lead resting on hot metal, or a section pinched under a bracket.
  3. 3.Read the static value. A steady reading near the controller's bias voltage indicates an open circuit; a steady 0.0 volts indicates a short to ground; a reading near system voltage indicates a short to power.
  4. 4.Wiggle-test the connector and the accessible harness while watching live data. A momentary flicker in the reading localises the fault immediately.
  5. 5.Check the heater circuit for supply, ground and resistance. An element that never warms up cannot generate a signal and looks identical to a dead sensor.

The code appeared right after I had other work done. Is that a coincidence?

Usually not. The bank 2 sensor loom runs through the space that mechanics have to clear to reach the rear-bank plugs, the intake manifold, the exhaust manifold and on many vehicles the starter. Connectors get separated to make room and then pushed together without clicking home, or a lead gets laid across something hot. Neither is negligence — it is the geometry of the engine bay. Go back and inspect the wiring in the area where the work was done before assuming the sensor failed on its own.

What does the stuck voltage value tell me?

A lot, and for free. Controllers commonly apply a small bias voltage to an oxygen sensor input specifically so an open circuit shows up as a steady reading rather than as nothing. If the line sits calmly at around that bias value, the sensor is very likely not connected. A steady zero points at a short to ground, and a reading up near battery voltage points at a short to power. Three different faults, distinguished by one glance at live data.

How do I tell a dead sensor from one that is just reading calmly?

Compare it against the same position on the other bank. A third-position sensor sits behind two converters in series, so the oxygen swings have already been smoothed out and a healthy trace here looks much flatter than an upstream one. If Bank 1 Sensor 3 shows the same gentle behaviour, that is normal for this vehicle. The code sets on a complete absence of movement, not on a calm signal.

Can I keep driving with P0166?

Yes. This sensor monitors the rear converter on Bank 2 and has no part in fuel delivery, so nothing about how the vehicle runs will change. The consequences are that emissions monitors will not complete and that the silent sensor can produce a converter efficiency code the controller had no valid basis for. Deal with it before that second code turns into a quote.
