P0169: Incorrect Fuel Composition
The controller has concluded that what is in the tank is not the fuel it expects. On this code the most informative diagnostic tool is the receipt from the last fill-up.

What does P0169 mean?
Flex-fuel vehicles are built to run on anything from ordinary petrol to a blend containing up to about 85 percent ethanol, and they manage that by measuring the fuel rather than assuming it. A fuel composition sensor sits in the fuel line and reports the ethanol content, usually as a frequency that varies with the blend. The controller reads that figure and adjusts injector pulse width, spark timing and cold-start enrichment accordingly, because ethanol carries less energy per unit volume and needs noticeably more of it to make the same power. P0169 is set when the reported composition falls outside the range the controller is prepared to work with, or when it contradicts what the engine is actually doing.
The reason to start with refuelling history rather than with a meter is that the code is frequently correct. A tank filled from a pump that was mislabelled, a station whose underground tank has taken on water, a splash of the wrong grade added in an emergency, or fuel that has sat in the vehicle for a season and separated will all produce a genuine composition problem. Ethanol blends are hygroscopic, and once enough water is absorbed the ethanol and water can drop out of the petrol as a separate layer at the bottom of the tank. A sensor that reports that layer is not malfunctioning. It is describing something real, and no amount of electrical testing will change the answer.
The second possibility is that the sensor has failed or is being misread. These sensors sit in the fuel path and are exposed to everything that goes through it, so contamination, internal damage and connector corrosion all occur. The signal is a frequency rather than a voltage on most systems, which means an ordinary voltmeter will not tell you much and a scan tool reading the reported ethanol percentage is the more useful instrument. A value pinned at zero or at the top of the range regardless of what has been put in the tank is characteristic of a failed sensor rather than of bad fuel.
Driving on genuinely wrong fuel is not neutral. Too much ethanol in a vehicle not calibrated for it leans the mixture and raises combustion temperatures. Water-contaminated fuel corrodes and can stall the engine outright. Neither is a reason to panic, but both are reasons to establish what is in the tank before adding another fifty dollars of it.

- Water contamination in the fuel causing phase separation of an ethanol blend
- Stale fuel left in the vehicle long enough to degrade or separate
- Failed fuel composition sensor reporting a value outside the valid range
- Corroded or damaged connector at the composition sensor interrupting the frequency signal
- Wiring fault between the sensor and the engine control module
- Software calibration mismatch after a module replacement on a flex-fuel vehicle
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, often within a tank or two of a particular fill-up
- Rough running, hesitation or misfire especially when cold
- Noticeably reduced fuel economy
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Reported ethanol percentage in live data stuck at one value or clearly implausible
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask what fuel went in most recently and where. A code that appeared within a tank of an unusual fill-up is pointing at the fuel, not the vehicle.
- 2.Read the reported ethanol percentage on a scan tool. A value that does not move at all across different fills, or one pinned at an extreme, suggests the sensor rather than the fuel.
- 3.Draw a fuel sample into a clear container and let it stand. A distinct layer at the bottom indicates water and phase separation, which explains the code without any electrical fault.
- 4.Check the composition sensor connector for corrosion, and confirm it is fully seated.
- 5.Confirm the sensor's signal is present. Most of these devices output a frequency rather than a voltage, so use a scan tool value or a meter capable of reading frequency.
- 6.If the fuel is suspect, drain and refill with fuel of known quality from a reputable station, then clear the code and drive a full tank before re-testing.
- 7.If the code returns on known-good fuel and the wiring is sound, replace the composition sensor.
