What does P0180 mean?

A fuel temperature sensor is a thermistor — a resistor whose value falls predictably as it gets warmer. The controller supplies a reference voltage through a fixed resistor, reads what comes back, and converts that to a temperature. P0180 is the general circuit code for the first of these sensors: the returned value is outside the range any real temperature could produce, or it is behaving in a way the plausibility check rejects. It is a statement about the circuit rather than about the fuel, which distinguishes it from the temperature-condition codes nearby in the range.

The practical fact that dominates this code is location, and it is worth establishing before quoting anything. Manufacturers put fuel temperature sensors in very different places. Some fit them in an accessible spot on the fuel rail or in a line under the bonnet, where the sensor is a ten-minute job. Others integrate them into the in-tank fuel pump module, which means the tank has to be dropped or an access panel cut, and on some vehicles the sensor is not sold separately from the pump assembly at all. Diesel applications commonly build the sensor into the injection pump or the filter housing. The thermistor itself may cost thirty dollars in every one of those cases. The labour ranges from half an hour to most of a day, and on the worst layouts the smallest part you can buy is a several-hundred-dollar module. Diagnosis is straightforward once you know where it lives. Thermistor circuits fail in a small number of ways, and the reported value usually names which one. A temperature pinned at the extreme cold end of the scale typically means an open circuit, because the controller sees the full reference voltage return. A value pinned at the hot extreme typically means a short to ground. A reading that wanders implausibly, or jumps between sensible and nonsense as the vehicle moves, points at a connector or a broken strand rather than a failed thermistor. Unplugging the sensor and watching what the reported value does — then bridging the two pins and watching it swing the other way — proves the harness and the controller in about a minute, without removing anything.

As for consequences, this sensor is a correction input rather than a control input. The controller uses fuel temperature to fine-tune density compensation and, on diesels, to inform injection timing and pump protection strategies. Losing it means the controller substitutes a default and carries on. The vehicle drives, sometimes with slightly worse economy or a marginally rougher cold start, and the real costs are a failed emissions inspection and the loss of a protection input that exists for a reason.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Find out where the sensor is fitted on this specific vehicle before doing anything else. Accessible line-mounted, in-tank pump module and injection-pump-integrated versions all exist and the repair effort differs by an order of magnitude.
  2. 2.Read the reported fuel temperature. A value pinned at the extreme cold end suggests an open circuit; a value pinned at the extreme hot end suggests a short to ground.
  3. 3.Unplug the sensor and watch the reported value. It should swing to one extreme. Then bridge the signal and ground pins on the harness side and watch it swing to the other. If it does both, the wiring and the controller are proven good and the sensor is at fault.
  4. 4.Inspect the connector for corrosion, water and spread terminals, and check the pigtail where it enters the loom.
  5. 5.Measure the thermistor's resistance and compare it against the specification at a known temperature.
  6. 6.Check whether other sensors sharing the same reference voltage are also reporting faults. A common rail failure explains several codes at once and is a different repair.
  7. 7.Wiggle-test the harness while watching live data if the fault is intermittent rather than constant.

Because the part is cheap and the access is not. The thermistor costs about the same wherever it is fitted, but one manufacturer puts it in a fuel line under the bonnet and another builds it into the pump module inside the tank. The first is a short job. The second means dropping the tank or cutting an access panel, and on some vehicles the sensor cannot be bought on its own — you buy the pump assembly. Establish the location for your specific vehicle before comparing quotes, or you will be comparing two different jobs.

Can I prove where the fault is without taking anything apart?

The vehicle will not fail an emissions inspection for drivability, but it will fail on the stored code.

What does the "A" mean in the code title?

It identifies which fuel temperature sensor the code refers to on vehicles fitted with more than one. Some systems measure fuel temperature at more than one point — supply and return, or tank and rail — and the letter is the manufacturer's index for the position, with related codes covering the second sensor. On a vehicle with only one fuel temperature sensor, the letter carries no extra meaning and this is simply the code for that sensor's circuit.
