What does P0198 mean?

An open circuit and a very cold engine produce the same signal voltage, and P0198 is the controller reporting that it can no longer tell them apart. The module supplies a reference through an internal resistor and expects the thermistor to pull that line toward ground; hotter oil means lower resistance and lower voltage. When the path to ground disappears, nothing pulls the line down, the voltage pins at maximum, and maximum decodes to the coldest value the table holds. The result on a scan tool is an oil temperature stuck at something like minus forty on an engine that has been running for an hour.

The first question on this code is not electrical, it is historical: what has been done to the car recently? The engine oil temperature sensor threads into the pan, the filter housing or the cooler adapter, and every one of those places is disturbed on a routine basis. Oil and filter changes, pan gasket work, cooler and adapter replacement, sump plug and pan repairs, even transmission or subframe jobs that need the pan area clear — all of them involve someone reaching around a small connector that is often out of sight and usually in the way. Unplugging it and forgetting to plug it back in is the single most common way an oil temperature circuit goes open, and it costs nothing to check. A latch that has been snapped and refitted without seating, a terminal pushed back while the connector was being felt for blind, or a lead trapped under the pan rail during reassembly are all in the same category. If the light appeared within a few hundred miles of a service, start under the car with your eyes and not with a meter.

The second thing worth knowing before ordering a part is that on a growing number of vehicles the thermistor is not sold on its own. Manufacturers increasingly combine oil temperature with oil level, and sometimes with an oil quality or condition measurement, into a single sender that mounts through the side or the base of the pan. Where that is the case, the smallest thing you can buy is the complete sender assembly, and the price gap between it and a bare thermistor is large — an ordinary screw-in temperature sensor might be twenty or thirty dollars, while a combined level and condition sender can be several times that before labour. It also changes what else goes wrong at the same time: a fault in that assembly may bring an oil level warning or a service-interval message along with the temperature code, which looks like several problems and is one part. Establish which type your engine uses before accepting an estimate, because an estimate written for the wrong one will be wrong by a wide margin in either direction.

Mechanically, an open is also the way thermistors most often fail on their own. Repeated heating and cooling works on the joint between the sensing element and its leads until the connection separates, and the failure mode is a clean open rather than a drift. So the sensor is a genuine candidate here in a way it is not on a short-to-ground code — but it is still the second thing to check, not the first, because the harness and connector explanations are more common and much cheaper to rule out.

The test that separates the two is quick. Unplug the sensor connector and jumper the signal wire to the sensor ground wire with the key on. If the reported oil temperature immediately jumps to the hot extreme, you have proved that the harness and the module are intact and the break is inside the sensor. If it stays cold with the jumper fitted, the sensor is not the problem and the open is somewhere between that connector and the module.

  • Broken signal or ground wire in the short lead that crosses the underside of the engine

  • Corroded terminals from road salt and standing water at the connector
  • Loss of the reference feed or the sensor ground on the module side
  • Combined oil level, condition and temperature sender failed internally

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with oil temperature reported at the coldest value in the range
  • Oil temperature gauge reading at the bottom stop or not moving at all
  • Oil-life or service-interval monitor failing to progress or resetting oddly
  • Oil level warning or condition message appearing at the same time on vehicles with a combined sender
  • Changed shift or torque converter lockup behaviour where the transmission controller reads this input
  • No change in the way the engine itself runs
  • Emissions inspection rejected on the stored code

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Ask what work the vehicle has had recently and when the light first appeared. A code that arrives shortly after an oil change, pan job or cooler replacement is a disconnected or damaged connector until proven otherwise.
  2. 2.Put the vehicle on a lift and physically check that the sensor connector is present, latched and undamaged before doing anything electrical.
  3. 3.Read live oil temperature on a fully warm engine. A value at the cold extreme after a long drive proves the circuit is open now rather than historically.
  4. 4.Identify whether your engine uses a standalone thermistor or a combined oil level, condition and temperature sender. This determines what can be replaced and what it will cost.
  5. 5.Unplug the connector and jumper the signal wire to the sensor ground wire with the key on. A jump to the hot extreme proves the harness and module are good and the sensor is open.
  6. 6.If the reading stays cold with the jumper fitted, move the jumper progressively closer to the module to bracket the break.
  7. 7.Check for reference voltage at the harness side of the connector. Its absence points upstream, at the module side or a shared feed, rather than at the sensor.
  8. 8.Measure sensor resistance directly against the manufacturer's temperature-to-resistance table. An infinite reading confirms an internally open sensor.
  9. 9.Inspect the lead where it crosses the underside of the engine for crush, cut and chafe damage from previous work before refitting anything.

Repair cost

Diagnosis is $75 to $150, and if the cause turns out to be a connector left unplugged after a service the fix is free. A wiring or terminal repair is $90 to $260. A standalone screw-in sensor is roughly $20 to $120 for the part with 0.3 to 2 hours labour, plus an oil and filter change where the oil has to be drained. A combined oil level, condition and temperature sender is $120 to $400 for the part and can take the total to $750 on pan-mounted installations.

The light came on right after my oil change. Is that a coincidence?

Very probably not. The oil temperature sensor threads into the pan, the filter housing or the cooler adapter, so its connector sits right in the area someone has just been working around, frequently out of sight and reached by feel. Unplugged and not reconnected, unlatched, or a terminal knocked back while the connector was being groped for are all common, and all produce exactly this code. Before spending anything on diagnosis, get the car in the air and look at the connector. It is a two-minute check that resolves a meaningful share of these.

Why does the scan tool say my oil is at minus forty?

Because that is the number an open circuit produces. The module feeds a reference voltage down the signal line and waits for the sensor to pull it toward ground, with more heat meaning less resistance and lower voltage. Break the circuit and nothing pulls it down, so the voltage sits at maximum — and maximum voltage means maximum resistance, which the temperature table reads as the coldest value it holds. The reading is not a measurement that has gone wrong; it is the default the electronics fall to when there is no sensor at the end of the wire.

Why is the quote for the part so much higher than I expected?

Almost certainly because your engine does not use a plain temperature sensor. Manufacturers increasingly combine oil temperature with oil level, and sometimes an oil condition measurement, into one sender that mounts through the pan. Where that is the design, the thermistor is not sold separately and the smallest part available is the whole assembly, which costs several times what a screw-in sensor does. It is worth confirming which type your engine has before comparing quotes, because an estimate written for the wrong one will be badly out in one direction or the other.

Can I keep driving with P0198?

Yes. The engine does not use oil temperature to decide how to run, so a lost reading does not affect starting, power or driveability, and the controller substitutes a default. Two things are worth watching. The code will fail an emissions inspection. And where the transmission controller reads this input for shift scheduling and converter lockup, a stuck-cold value can make shift behaviour feel different — which is worth knowing so a gearbox is not diagnosed for a wiring fault. You also lose the oil-life monitor's accuracy, so track your oil changes by mileage until it is fixed.
