P0211: Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 11

What does P0211 mean?
The engine control module (ECM) fires each fuel injector by pulsing its control circuit — battery voltage feeds one side of the injector while the ECM switches the ground on the other side for a precise number of milliseconds. It monitors that circuit electrically, and when the feedback does not match the command it sets an injector circuit code. P0211 isolates the fault to the cylinder 11 injector circuit.
Cylinder 11 exists only on engines with twelve or more cylinders. In practice that means the V12s from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lamborghini, plus W12 engines from the Volkswagen group and a range of industrial, marine, and heavy-equipment engines. If your vehicle has ten cylinders or fewer, P0211 cannot legitimately apply, and the likely explanation is a scan tool misreading a manufacturer-specific code or looking it up in the wrong table. Re-scan with a tool that supports your make before spending anything.
The most important structural difference on a twelve-cylinder engine is that it frequently does not have one engine control module. Many V12s — Mercedes M120 and M275/M279, BMW M70/N73/N74, and others — use two control modules, one per bank, operating as a master and a slave, or a pair of coordinated units. That matters a great deal for this code. It means cylinder 11 is driven by the module that serves its bank, not by a single central computer, and a fault that looks like a wiring problem can equally be a communication or power supply problem affecting one module. It also means the diagnostic path includes checking whether the module for that bank is powered, grounded, and communicating before you conclude anything about the injector. On some of these engines a single failed module produces circuit codes across every cylinder on one side at once — a pattern that no amount of injector replacement will fix.
Beyond that, the standard logic applies. "Circuit/Open" is an electrical description rather than a verdict on the injector. A broken or chafed wire, a corroded or backed-out connector pin, a poor ground, or a blown fuse will all set it, as will an injector coil that has failed open. Injectors on these engines are fed in groups through shared fuses and relays, so if P0211 appeared alongside other injector codes, back-probe a couple of connectors for battery voltage before assuming you need parts.
The economics deserve stating plainly. V12 injectors are low-volume parts and are often only available through the dealer, so the price per injector is typically well above what the same job costs on a V8. Access can be involved, since these engines fill their bays completely and the intake assemblies are elaborate. And the diagnostic work benefits substantially from a factory-level scan tool, because generic tools frequently cannot see the per-bank module data these engines report. For most owners, this is a code to take to a shop that knows the specific engine rather than one to work through by trial and error — a wrong guess here is an expensive one.

- Harness damage from previous work on the intake or valve covers, which are elaborate on these engines
- Failed cylinder 11 injector driver inside the control module serving that bank
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, sometimes flashing if cylinder 11 is dead
- Rough idle and engine vibration, particularly noticeable on an engine designed to be exceptionally smooth
- Loss of power and hesitation on acceleration
- A cylinder 11 misfire, often as a companion P0311
- Raw fuel smell or increased fuel consumption
- Hard starting in some cases
- Multiple injector codes on one bank if the module or feed for that bank has failed
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm your engine actually has twelve or more cylinders. If it does not, re-scan with a tool that supports your make before spending anything.
- 2.Record every stored code and map the affected cylinders to banks. On a dual-module V12, circuit codes across one entire bank point at that bank's control module, its power supply, or its ground — not at the injectors.
- 3.Confirm both control modules are powered, grounded, and communicating before diagnosing individual circuits, using a scan tool that can see per-bank data.
- 4.Identify which physical cylinder your engine calls number 11 and which bank it is on, from the numbering diagram for your specific engine.
- 5.Check the injector fuse and relay for that bank's group first — the cheapest possible outcome and the fastest to rule out.
- 6.Back-probe the cylinder 11 injector connector for battery voltage on the feed side with the key on. No voltage means the fault is upstream of the injector.
- 7.Inspect the connector and harness for corrosion, chafing, heat damage, and backed-out pins, then wiggle-test while watching live data.
- 8.Measure the cylinder 11 injector's coil resistance with the key off and compare it to specification and to the other injectors. An open or badly out-of-spec reading condemns the injector.
- 9.Use a noid light or the scan tool's injector test at the connector to confirm the module is pulsing the circuit.
- 10.Swap-test with a known-good injector from another cylinder if the resistance reading is borderline, rather than buying a low-volume part on a guess.
- 11.Only if the fuse, feed, ground, wiring, and injector all test good should you suspect the injector driver in the module for that bank, since replacement requires programming.
