What does P0224 mean?

On a drive-by-wire vehicle the accelerator pedal and throttle body each carry redundant position sensors, and the control module compares them constantly before acting on any throttle request. The 'B' circuit is one of those redundant signals. P0224 sets when the module catches that signal behaving badly — dropping out, spiking, jumping discontinuously, or briefly leaving its valid window — and then returning to normal before a hard low or high code can qualify.

That single word, intermittent, changes the entire diagnostic approach. P0222 and P0223 are steady-state faults: the voltage is wrong and it stays wrong, so you can measure it whenever you get to the car. P0224 is a fault that is usually absent when you go looking for it. The circuit will read perfectly in the bay, the sensor will sweep smoothly on the bench, and every static test you run will pass. None of that clears the circuit — it just means the fault was not present at that moment.

So the causes skew heavily toward connections rather than components. A terminal that has spread slightly and only loses contact under vibration. A pin backed part-way out of its housing that still touches until the harness moves. A wire chafed to a few remaining strands that opens under flex or thermal expansion. Corrosion that conducts when dry and fails when damp. A connector that was disturbed during unrelated work and never fully re-seated. Any of those produce a signal that is fine most of the time and briefly, unpredictably, not.

There are two non-wiring causes worth ruling out because they are easy to miss. The first is charging-system health: a weak battery, a failing alternator, or excessive ripple voltage shifts sensor reference values and can generate intermittent implausibility on entirely healthy hardware. The second is a sensor with an internal wear spot — a worn track or a marginal internal connection that reads correctly across most of its sweep and glitches at one particular angle, which is why sweeping the pedal slowly through its full range while graphing live data finds faults that a static reading never will.

Symptoms follow the same pattern as the code. Rather than a permanent limp mode, drivers usually describe a momentary loss of power, a brief surge or hesitation, a flicker of the reduced-power warning, or a check engine light that comes on and later goes off by itself. Those transient events are real fail-safe entries, and they are worth taking seriously — a circuit that drops out briefly today can fail outright at a genuinely inconvenient moment.

Why does everything test fine but the code keeps coming back?

Because P0224 describes a fault that is not present most of the time. Static tests measure the circuit at one moment, and at that moment the connection is making contact and the sensor is reading correctly. Passing a static test does not clear the circuit on an intermittent code. The tests that actually find these faults are dynamic ones: a wiggle test with live data displayed, a slow full-travel pedal sweep graphed against the other sensor, and a loaded voltage-drop test on the ground and reference.

How is P0224 different from P0222 and P0223?

Same circuit, different behavior. P0222 means the 'B' signal is stuck below its minimum and P0223 means it is stuck above its maximum — both are steady-state faults you can measure whenever you get to the vehicle. P0224 means the signal misbehaved and then went back to normal. That pushes the likely cause away from a failed component and toward a connection problem: a spread terminal, a backed-out pin, a chafed wire, or corrosion that only fails under vibration, flex, heat, or moisture.

Should I just replace the pedal sensor to make it go away?

It is a common move and it is often the wrong one. A new pedal assembly does nothing for a spread terminal, a chafed wire, a resistive ground, or a marginal 5-volt reference — and those account for a large share of intermittent throttle-circuit codes. Replacing the sensor first can also appear to fix the problem temporarily, simply because unplugging and re-seating the connector restored a marginal contact that will loosen again. Check the connections and the grounds first.

Can I drive with P0224?

Usually yes, though with a caveat worth taking seriously. Because the fault is intermittent, the vehicle drives normally most of the time and then briefly loses power without warning. A momentary power loss while merging or passing is a genuine hazard even though it is short. Braking and steering are unaffected. It is reasonable to keep driving carefully while you arrange a repair, but it is not a code to ignore for months — intermittent circuit faults tend to become permanent ones.
