P0272: Cylinder 4 Contribution/Balance Fault

What does P0272 mean?
P0272 completes the cylinder 4 group in the injector block, and like the other contribution/balance codes it measures results rather than wiring. The engine control module (ECM) reads crankshaft rotational speed at high resolution through the crankshaft position sensor. Each power stroke gives the crankshaft a brief acceleration whose magnitude reflects how much work that cylinder produced. The ECM compares all cylinders and flags any one that falls outside the allowed spread. When cylinder 4 is the outlier, P0272 sets.
Because the ECM is measuring an outcome, three separate systems can produce the same code. Fuel: a restricted, worn, or slow-opening injector delivers less than commanded. Ignition: on a gasoline engine, a worn plug or a coil breaking down under load leaves combustion incomplete. Compression: worn rings, a burnt or leaking valve, or a head gasket leak means the cylinder cannot turn combustion into pressure on the piston. To the crankshaft sensor all three look identical.
That is why testing order beats parts-swapping on this code. Inspecting the cylinder 4 spark plug and swapping its coil takes minutes and rules out ignition. A compression and leak-down test on cylinder 4 takes a little longer and rules out the mechanical path definitively — and it is the step that prevents the most expensive common mistake here, which is fitting a new injector to a cylinder that has lost compression. Only when both come back clean does the injector become the leading suspect.
On diesel engines the analysis narrows to fuel and compression, and per-cylinder contribution readouts are a standard diagnostic rather than an exotic one. Diesel injectors typically degrade gradually, opening later and flowing less as they wear, which is exactly the kind of decline a balance monitor catches long before a misfire code would.
Common causes
- Restricted, dirty, or internally worn cylinder 4 fuel injector
- Injector opening late or producing a poor spray pattern under load
- Worn spark plug or failing ignition coil on cylinder 4 (gasoline engines)
- Low compression on cylinder 4 from worn rings, a burnt valve, or a valvetrain fault
- Head gasket leaking between cylinder 4 and a neighboring cylinder or into coolant
- Vacuum or intake gasket leak affecting only the cylinder 4 runner
- Low fuel pressure or a restricted fuel filter, which shows up first on the weakest cylinder
- High-resistance wiring or a corroded connector at the cylinder 4 injector

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read every stored code first. P0204, P0270, or P0271 present with P0272 means the injector circuit is electrically faulty — repair that and the balance fault normally resolves with it.
- 2.Confirm which physical cylinder your engine calls number 4 before testing. Inline fours usually number front to back, but V engines vary by manufacturer.
- 3.Run the scan tool's cylinder balance or injector contribution test and record how far cylinder 4 sits from the others. A large, repeatable deviation is meaningful; a small wandering one often is not.
- 4.On a gasoline engine, remove and compare the cylinder 4 spark plug against the others. Heavy wear, fouling, or oil on the electrode explains the weak contribution by itself.
- 5.Swap the cylinder 4 ignition coil with a neighboring cylinder, clear codes, and drive. If the fault follows the coil, stop there.
- 6.Compression- and leak-down-test cylinder 4 before buying fuel components. This is the step that distinguishes a worn engine from a weak injector, and skipping it is the most common cause of a repeat repair.
- 7.Check fuel rail pressure under load and inspect the fuel filter — a marginal supply presents as a single weak cylinder.
- 8.Use a stethoscope or the scan tool's buzz test to confirm the cylinder 4 injector is opening and closing.
- 9.If fuel supply, ignition, and compression all check out, swap the cylinder 4 injector with one from a healthy cylinder and see whether the fault follows the injector.
