P0285: Cylinder 9 Injector Circuit Low
The engine computer measured lower-than-expected voltage on the cylinder 9 injector control wire — a short to ground, a shorted injector coil, or a driver fault. First, though, confirm your engine actually has a ninth cylinder, because this code is also a favourite hiding place for manufacturer-specific reassignments.

What does P0285 mean?
The engine control module (ECM) fires each injector by feeding battery voltage to one side of it and switching the ground on the other side for a precise number of milliseconds. Between pulses the control wire should sit near battery voltage, because the injector coil connects it back to the feed. The ECM watches that line, and P0285 sets when the voltage on the cylinder 9 injector control circuit reads low when it should be high.
This code opens new territory in the per-cylinder injector block. Everything from P0261 to P0284 covers cylinders 1 through 8, which describes most of the engines on the road. P0285 is the first code in the block that requires a ninth cylinder, and that changes the first question you should ask. Very few vehicles have one. The realistic population is ten- and twelve-cylinder engines: the Ford 6.8L Triton V10 in Super Duty trucks, E-series vans and the Excursion; the Dodge/SRT 8.0 and 8.4 V10; the VW/Audi V10 families including the Touareg V10 TDI and the R8; the BMW S85 V10; V10 and V12 exotics; and large industrial, marine, and generator diesels. If your vehicle is a four, six, or eight cylinder and a scan tool is reporting P0285, do not start diagnosing a ninth injector. Either the tool has misread the code, or the manufacturer has reassigned the number to something else entirely — reassignment in the high P02xx range is not unusual, and the manufacturer-specific definition always outranks the generic one. Look the code up against your make before spending anything.
Assuming the cylinder is real, three faults produce a low reading. The control wire is shorted to ground somewhere in the harness. The injector's own coil winding has shorted internally, collapsing the circuit resistance. Or the ECM's cylinder 9 injector driver — the transistor that does the switching — has failed shorted-on. The first two are far more common than the third, and the third should only be concluded after the wiring and the injector have both been cleared.
A hard short means cylinder 9 is either dead or being flooded, which is why this is treated as a do-not-drive condition despite the engine still running. Unburned fuel dumped into the exhaust is the fastest way to destroy a catalytic converter, and on a ten-cylinder engine that converter is not a cheap part.
Cylinder numbering matters here as much as anywhere in the block, and the conventions genuinely disagree. Ford's Triton V10 numbers the passenger bank 1-2-3-4-5 and the driver's bank 6-7-8-9-10, which puts cylinder 9 second from the rear on the DRIVER'S side. Some V10s instead use the odd/even bank split familiar from American V8s, which places the odd-numbered cylinders including 9 all on one bank. European V10s and V12s follow their own conventions again. Pull up the cylinder-numbering diagram for your exact engine before you remove a single bolt, and do not try to work it out from the firing order — the firing order tells you when a cylinder fires, not where it sits.
One practical advantage worth using before you commit to any disassembly. Because the fault is electrical, you can test it from the connector rather than by teardown: unplug the cylinder 9 injector, clear the code, and start the engine. If P0285 returns with the injector disconnected, the fault is in the wiring or the ECM and no amount of intake removal will help. That test takes minutes and is worth more on a ten-cylinder engine than on a four, because the cylinders at the back of a long bank are among the hardest injectors on any engine to reach.
Finally, a budgeting note specific to this end of the block. Injectors for a Triton V10 are ordinary port injectors and cost accordingly. Injectors for a V10 or V12 exotic frequently do not, and neither does the labor, and parts availability on low-volume engines can be its own obstacle. Diagnose properly before ordering, because on these engines guessing is expensive in a way it is not on a four-cylinder.
Common causes

- Internally shorted cylinder 9 injector coil winding
- Corroded, wet, or damaged connector at the cylinder 9 injector
- Harness rubbed through where it passes near the intake manifold, exhaust, or a bracket toward the rear of a long bank
- Water intrusion from a leaking cowl seal reaching a rear-of-bank connector
- Wiring damaged during recent intake manifold, plenum, or valve cover work
- Failed cylinder 9 injector driver inside the ECM/PCM (uncommon — rule out everything else first)
- Code misread or manufacturer-reassigned on an engine that has no ninth cylinder
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, often flashing if cylinder 9 is dead
- Rough idle and engine shake, though a ten-cylinder engine masks a single dead cylinder better than a four does
- Reduced power and hesitation on acceleration
- Companion misfire codes, commonly P0300 for a random or multiple misfire
- Raw fuel smell or black smoke if the injector is being held open
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Poor fuel economy
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm your engine actually has a ninth cylinder before anything else. If it does not, the code has either been misread or reassigned by the manufacturer — look it up against your specific make and model.
- 2.Record every stored code. A companion misfire code alongside P0285 confirms the cylinder is genuinely affected rather than the code being a stray electrical report.
- 3.Confirm which physical cylinder your engine calls number 9. Ford's Triton V10 numbers the driver's bank 6-7-8-9-10; other V10s split odd and even cylinders across the banks instead.
- 4.Unplug the cylinder 9 injector, clear the code, and start the engine. If P0285 returns with the injector disconnected, the fault is in the wiring or the ECM, not the injector — and you have just saved a teardown.
- 5.With the injector unplugged and the key off, measure resistance from the control wire to ground. Near zero indicates the short to ground; an open reading clears the wire.
- 6.Measure the cylinder 9 injector's coil resistance and compare it against specification and against the other injectors. A reading well below the others indicates shorted windings.
- 7.Inspect the harness along its whole run, paying attention to anywhere it passes a bracket, the exhaust, or a manifold edge. Rear-of-bank harnesses see the most heat and the most cowl water.
- 8.Inspect the connector for green corrosion, moisture, spread terminals, or a partially seated lock.
- 9.Wiggle-test the harness and connector with the engine running while watching live data, to catch an intermittent short.
- 10.Price the part and confirm availability before committing, since injectors for low-volume ten- and twelve-cylinder engines are not always stocked and are not always cheap.
- 11.If the wiring and the injector both test good and the drive signal is still wrong, suspect the ECM injector driver — but confirm the first two paths thoroughly, because module replacement requires programming.

A wiring or connector repair is often $50-$300, though a chafed harness toward the back of a long bank takes longer to reach and trace. A port fuel injector for a Ford Triton V10 or similar mainstream ten-cylinder runs $60-$200 in parts plus 0.5-3 hours of labor, and cylinder 9 sits toward the top of that labor range because it is near the rear of its bank, frequently under the upper intake plenum, which adds gaskets. Injectors for V10 and V12 exotics and for direct-injection applications cost substantially more — $250-$700 each is normal, and parts availability on low-volume engines can add its own delay. A failed ECM injector driver is uncommon and runs $500-$1,800 including programming. Diagnosis alone is typically $100-$200.
