P0297: Vehicle Overspeed Condition
The powertrain control module recorded the vehicle exceeding the top speed it was calibrated for, and cut fuel to bring it back down. Most of the time this is a record of what someone did, not a fault — but if nobody drove it that fast, the speed signal itself is lying, and that is worth finding.

What does P0297 mean?
Nearly every vehicle sold in North America has a speed limiter built into its powertrain calibration. The powertrain control module (PCM) continuously compares vehicle speed — derived from the vehicle speed sensor, the transmission output shaft sensor, or the wheel speed sensors depending on the platform — against a programmed maximum. When measured speed reaches that ceiling, the PCM intervenes, usually by cutting the injector pulse to some or all cylinders until speed falls back into range, then restoring it. P0297 is the record that the limiter engaged.
The limit is not chosen for engine safety. It is almost always set by the speed rating of the tires the vehicle left the factory on, which is why the same drivetrain can carry different limiters in different trims. Common factory ceilings sit somewhere between 95 and 130 mph, with many mainstream vehicles limited around 100 to 112 mph.
This is the unusual case in the diagnostic trouble code catalogue where the correct first question is not "what is broken" but "did this actually happen?" If someone genuinely drove the vehicle past its limiter, nothing is wrong with the car. The code is a behavioural record, and it is stored exactly as designed. That is why P0297 turns up so reliably in two situations: a used-car pre-purchase inspection, where it is a meaningful data point about how the previous owner treated the vehicle, and a fleet, rental, or family vehicle, where it is often the reason the code was looked up in the first place. Clear it, and if it never comes back, there was never a fault.
The interesting case is the other one. If the vehicle has never been driven anywhere near that speed and P0297 is stored, then the PCM is being told the vehicle is going faster than it is, and the cause sits somewhere in how speed is measured or interpreted. Four possibilities cover almost all of it.
Tire and gearing changes are the most common by far. Speed is calculated from a rotational signal multiplied by a stored constant for tire size and final drive ratio. Fit substantially smaller tires, or change the differential ratio, and the calculation over-reports speed by the same percentage the setup changed — a truck on undersized tires with the calibration never updated can read meaningfully high everywhere on the dial. Lifted trucks are usually the opposite case, but any un-recalibrated change to rolling diameter or gearing skews the reading in one direction or the other.
A mis-programmed or mismatched control module is next. A PCM or instrument cluster from a different trim, or a module flashed with the wrong calibration file, can carry the wrong tire and axle constants or the wrong limiter value entirely. If this code appeared right after a module was replaced or reprogrammed, that is the place to look first.
Third, an electrically noisy or intermittently failing speed sensor can produce a momentary spike the PCM reads as a real speed. This usually leaves company — a speedometer that jumps, a shift quality complaint, or codes in the P0500 family — and rarely arrives alone.
Fourth, and least common, a genuine limiter or software fault, which is a manufacturer service-bulletin question rather than something to diagnose with a meter.
The vehicle is driveable and the code does not itself indicate damage. The value in understanding it is different: it tells you either something about the driver, or something about a speed signal the PCM also uses for shifting, cruise control, stability control and speedometer accuracy — all of which are worth having right.
Common causes
- The vehicle was genuinely driven past its programmed speed limiter — the most common explanation by a wide margin, and not a fault at all
- Tire size changed without recalibrating the PCM, so the calculated speed no longer matches actual road speed
- Final drive or differential ratio changed without updating the stored constant
- PCM, TCM, or instrument cluster replaced, reprogrammed, or sourced from a different trim with the wrong calibration
- Failing or electrically noisy vehicle speed sensor producing a false high-speed spike
- Damaged, chafed, or poorly shielded speed sensor wiring picking up interference
- Aftermarket tuning or a performance calibration that altered or removed the limiter improperly
- Software or calibration fault addressed by a manufacturer service bulletin (uncommon)
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, sometimes long after the event that caused it
- A hard, abrupt cut in power at high speed as the limiter engages, felt as a sudden flat spot rather than a stumble
- Speedometer reading that does not match GPS or a known road speed, if the underlying cause is calibration
- Erratic speedometer, cruise control dropping out, or unexpected shift behaviour if a speed sensor is failing
- Frequently no drivability symptom at all, with the code found during a scan or a pre-purchase inspection
- Companion vehicle speed sensor codes in the P0500 family if the signal itself is at fault
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Establish first whether the vehicle was actually driven that fast. If it was, the code is a record of the event rather than a fault, and no repair is required.
- 2.Clear the code and drive normally. If P0297 does not return, the limiter did what it was designed to do and there is nothing to fix.
- 3.Check the speedometer against a GPS speed reading at a steady 40 and 60 mph. A consistent percentage error points straight at a tire size or gear ratio mismatch.
- 4.Ask whether the tires, wheels, or differential ratio have been changed, and whether the PCM calibration was updated afterwards. This is the single most common cause when nobody drove the vehicle hard.
- 5.Ask whether any module — PCM, TCM, or instrument cluster — has recently been replaced, reprogrammed, or swapped from another vehicle, since the wrong calibration file carries the wrong constants.
- 6.Read all stored codes. Companion codes in the P0500 vehicle speed sensor family point at the signal itself rather than at a driving event.
- 7.Watch live vehicle speed data while driving at a steady, moderate speed and look for spikes, dropouts, or a value that disagrees with GPS.
- 8.Inspect the vehicle speed sensor and its wiring for damage, chafing, corroded connectors, or missing shielding, and check that the connector is fully seated.
- 9.If the vehicle has aftermarket tuning, have the calibration verified — an improperly modified or removed limiter is a common cause of this code appearing without a genuine overspeed.
- 10.Check for manufacturer service bulletins for your specific make, model and year before pursuing a hardware repair, since some occurrences of this code are calibration issues with a published fix.
