P0351: Ignition Coil 'A' Primary/Secondary Circuit
A circuit fault on the first ignition coil in the manufacturer's mapping — the one code in this family where you can be reasonably confident which cylinder you are being sent to before you open a manual.

What does P0351 mean?
An ignition coil is a transformer with a switch. The module energises the low-voltage primary winding, holds it for a few milliseconds while a magnetic field builds, then abruptly switches it off; the collapsing field induces tens of thousands of volts in the secondary winding, and that is what jumps the plug gap. The module watches the primary side while it does this — how quickly current rises, how much of it flows, what the voltage does when the field collapses. P0351 is that monitor reporting that the first coil circuit did not behave like an intact coil.
What separates this code from the rest of the P0351-P0358 family is certainty about location. The lettering runs A through H, and by the time you reach the middle letters the mapping between letter and cylinder genuinely varies between manufacturers and between engine layouts. 'A' is the one you can act on: it is the first coil in the manufacturer's own ordering, and on the overwhelming majority of engines that is cylinder number 1. Cylinder 1 is also the engine's reference cylinder — it is what timing marks index to, what top-dead-centre is set from, and where every firing-order diagram begins — so its identity is the single best-documented fact about the engine you are working on.
That has a practical consequence people miss. Because cylinder 1 is the reference, it is the cylinder that gets disturbed for reasons unrelated to ignition. Compression testing starts there. Verifying cam timing starts there. Borescope inspection, leak-down testing and setting the engine to TDC for timing work all mean pulling the number 1 coil out and unplugging it. On an engine with a service history, the coil 'A' connector has typically been unlatched more times than any other on the engine, and plastic locking tabs do not survive that indefinitely. A cracked or fatigued lock that lets the connector creep back under vibration produces an intermittent primary circuit fault with a perfectly healthy coil, and it is worth checking the latch specifically before assuming the coil has failed.
Position matters too. Cylinder 1 sits at an end of the block rather than in the middle, and on a longitudinally mounted engine that end faces the accessory drive, the belt and the cooling fan — the hottest airflow, the most vibration, and the shortest distance to anything that leaks or throws debris forward. On a transverse engine it is at one end of the cylinder head, which is where the ignition harness branch either begins or terminates, and the extremities of a branch take the most flex as the engine rocks on its mounts.
On a V engine, coil 'A' is on bank 1 by definition, so this code has already told you which half of the engine to walk to. That is not true of every letter in the family.
Common causes
- Failed ignition coil on the number 1 cylinder
- Cracked or fatigued connector lock on a coil that has been removed repeatedly for other diagnostic work
- Corroded or water-damaged coil connector at the front or end of the cylinder head
- Chafed or broken conductor at the extremity of the ignition harness branch
- Worn spark plug with an opened gap forcing the coil to produce higher voltage
- Oil or coolant in the spark plug well degrading the coil boot
- Failed coil driver inside the engine control module
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, sometimes flashing under load
- Misfire that is worst under load and often present at idle
- Cylinder 1 misfire code such as P0301 stored alongside
- Rough idle, shaking and a noticeable loss of power
- Fault that comes and goes after previous engine work in that area
- Increased fuel consumption and a strong smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read all stored codes. A cylinder-specific misfire alongside this one confirms the cylinder assignment far more reliably than any general rule about letters.
- 2.Check the coil connector's locking tab before anything else. Cylinder 1 is the cylinder that gets disturbed for compression tests, timing checks and borescope work, and a fatigued latch that lets the connector back out is a common cause here specifically.
- 3.Pull the coil and inspect the boot and the spark plug well for oil, coolant or water. A flooded well ruins the boot and tracks the spark to ground.
- 4.Inspect the spark plug for wear and gap. A gap opened by wear makes the coil work harder and can push a marginal coil into a circuit fault.
- 5.Swap the coil with one from the far end of the engine rather than an adjacent cylinder, so the result is unambiguous, and see whether the code and misfire follow it.
- 6.If the fault stays put, check the coil's power feed, ground and the primary control signal from the module at the connector.
- 7.Inspect the ignition harness where it reaches the end of its run. The extremities of a branch take the most movement as the engine rocks, and that is where conductors break inside intact-looking insulation.

Cylinder 1 is usually among the easiest coils to reach, which keeps the labour at the low end. Replacing the spark plug at the same time is normal practice and adds little.
