P0394: Camshaft Position Sensor 'B' Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2)
The Bank 2 exhaust camshaft signal drops out and returns. On a transverse engine, Bank 2 is the bank that swings under torque reaction, so worn engine mounts are a genuine root cause here.

What does P0394 mean?
P0394 closes out the camshaft position sensor set. The signal from the Bank 2 exhaust cam sensor is neither permanently absent nor permanently wrong — it disappears for a moment and comes back. By the time the vehicle reaches a workshop the circuit usually tests perfect, which is why this code frustrates more people than the other three combined.
The argument that makes P0394 different from every other intermittent camshaft code is about how the engine moves. On a transverse front-wheel-drive layout, the engine is not bolted rigidly to the car. It hangs on compliant mounts and it rotates about its own axis when torque is applied — forward under acceleration, and the other way under engine braking or in reverse. Bank 2, the bank without cylinder 1, is on most of those layouts the rear bank, the one that swings toward the firewall as the engine rocks. Any harness crossing from the body to that bank has to absorb that movement. When the loom has been shortened by a previous repair, re-routed with a zip tie in the wrong place, or simply lost the slack it was built with, the wire is pulled taut at the exact moment of maximum engine rock.
That produces a complaint pattern people rarely connect to a wiring fault: the code sets when pulling away hard, when the transmission drops a gear onto the throttle, or when reversing out of a driveway — but never on a rough road, which is the condition owners assume matters. If a Bank 2 intermittent tracks torque events rather than road surface, look at engine movement.
The practical consequence of that is a diagnostic step almost nobody performs for a sensor code: inspect the engine and torque mounts. A collapsed hydraulic mount or a torn torque strut lets the engine travel much further than the harness was designed to absorb, and it will keep destroying the fix. Replacing the sensor on a car with a failed mount produces a repair that lasts a few weeks and a customer who believes the diagnosis was wrong. Check the mounts before, not after.
When the fault is genuinely in the sensor, the usual intermittent culprits apply — a marginal internal connection, a terminal that has lost tension, moisture in a connector. But on this specific code, on a transverse V engine, the mounts and the harness slack deserve to be looked at first because they are the explanation that fits the symptom pattern.

- Insufficient harness slack across the body-to-engine crossing on the Bank 2 side
- Collapsed engine mount or torn torque strut allowing excessive engine movement
- Harness shortened, re-clipped or re-routed during a previous repair
- Loose or low-tension terminal in the sensor or ECM connector
- Moisture or corrosion in a connector that conducts until it is disturbed
- Sensor with a marginal internal connection that opens under vibration
- Reluctor ring with a slightly loose fit that shifts under load
- Chafed wire making and breaking contact against a grounded surface
Symptoms
- Check engine light that comes on, then goes out again after a few trips
- Code that sets under hard acceleration, on a downshift, or when reversing
- Momentary stumble or hesitation that clears immediately
- Brief loss of Bank 2 exhaust cam phasing during the dropout
- No fault found on a workshop test drive over smooth roads
- Occasional pending codes that never mature into a stored code
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask when it happens, in detail. Torque events — hard launches, downshifts, reversing — point at engine movement. Road surface points at harness vibration. The two lead to different repairs.
- 2.Inspect the engine mounts and torque strut before touching the electrical side. A collapsed mount is a root cause that will defeat any sensor replacement.
- 3.Trace the harness across the body-to-engine crossing on the Bank 2 side and look for a section that has lost its service loop or been clipped tighter than original.
- 4.With the engine running in gear against the brake, watch the engine rock while a second person observes the harness. A lead that visibly pulls taut has found the fault.
- 5.Set up a scan tool to record the Bank 2 exhaust cam signal during a road test that reproduces the reported conditions rather than during a bay idle.
- 6.Check terminal tension at both the sensor and the ECM connector with a matching probe pin, since a slack terminal produces exactly this symptom.
- 7.Open the connector and look for moisture staining or green film on the pins, which conducts fine until vibration breaks the contact.
- 8.After the repair, verify by reproducing the original conditions on a road test — this code cannot be confirmed fixed by an idle in the bay.
