What does P0409 mean?
P0409 is the general, unqualified circuit code for exhaust gas recirculation sensor 'A'. Where P0405 says the feedback signal is pinned low and P0406 says it is pinned high, P0409 simply says the circuit is not behaving electrically the way the PCM expects. Some manufacturers set P0409 as a broad first-level fault and then refine it into a low or high code on a later drive cycle; others use P0409 exclusively and never set the directional versions at all.
Sensor 'A' is the position or feedback sensor on the primary EGR valve. Its job is to tell the PCM where the valve actually is, so the module can compare commanded position against real position and run EGR in closed loop. On most modern electric EGR valves this sensor is built into the valve assembly and shares a connector with the drive circuit. On older systems, particularly vacuum-operated designs, the equivalent sensor is a separate EGR valve position (EVP) sensor or a differential-pressure feedback (DPFE) sensor mounted nearby.
Because P0409 is deliberately non-specific, it is a wiring code far more often than a sensor code. The EGR valve lives in one of the hottest, dirtiest places under the hood — bolted to or near the exhaust manifold — and the harness going to it takes constant heat cycling. Melted insulation, brittle connector bodies, green corrosion on the signal terminal, and pushed-back pins are all routine findings. A shared 5-volt reference that has sagged because another sensor on the same circuit is shorting will also produce P0409, which is why pulling all stored codes before touching anything matters.
Drivability impact is usually mild. When the PCM loses trustworthy EGR position feedback it defaults to a safe strategy, normally holding the valve closed, so the engine runs but EGR is effectively disabled. That costs a little fuel economy, may add a slight tendency to ping under load on some engines, and will fail an emissions inspection. On some diesel applications the consequences are larger because EGR position is tied into intake throttle and NOx aftertreatment strategy.
Common causes
- Corroded, melted, or heat-damaged connector at the EGR valve
- Open, shorted, or chafed wiring in the EGR sensor signal or return circuit
- Failed position sensor inside the EGR valve — usually not serviceable separately
- Sagging or shorted 5-volt reference shared with other sensors
- Connector left unseated after intake, manifold, or EGR service
- Carbon-seized EGR valve preventing the pintle from reaching commanded positions
- Poor PCM ground or corroded engine ground strap
- Aftermarket or incorrect-specification EGR valve reporting the wrong feedback range
Symptoms

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Pull every stored code before doing anything else. P0409 by itself is an EGR-circuit problem; P0409 with several unrelated sensor codes usually means a shared 5-volt reference fault.
- 2.Visually inspect the EGR valve connector for heat damage, melted insulation, green corrosion, or pins pushed back into the housing — and confirm it is fully latched.
- 3.Follow the harness from the valve back toward the PCM looking for chafe points where it crosses brackets or rests against the exhaust manifold heat shield.
- 4.Key on, engine off, verify a steady 5.0 volts at the reference pin and a clean ground at the sensor return pin.
- 5.Read the EGR position PID on a scan tool. A dead-flat value, an obviously implausible number, or a reading that jumps erratically when you wiggle the harness identifies the fault quickly.
- 6.Command the EGR valve open and closed with a bidirectional scan tool and watch whether the position feedback tracks the command smoothly.
- 7.Back-probe the signal wire at both the valve and the PCM connector. Signal present at the PCM but not at the valve means a harness fault; absent at both means the sensor has failed.
- 8.If the valve is carbon-seized, remove it and inspect the pintle and passages — mechanical binding can produce feedback the PCM rejects as a circuit fault.
- 9.After repair, clear the code, cycle the valve through its full range, and complete a drive cycle to confirm the EGR monitor runs and passes.

Reseating a connector someone left unplugged costs nothing. Connector or pigtail repair runs $100-$250 depending on access. Harness repair is $150-$400. A full EGR valve replacement — the fix when the internal position sensor has genuinely failed — is typically $250-$650 installed on common gasoline applications and $400-$900 or more on diesels and on engines where the valve is buried under the intake manifold. Diagnosis is usually one hour of shop labor and is worth paying for, since the range between 'clean a connector' and 'replace the valve' is large.
