What does P0419 mean?
P0419 sets when the powertrain control module detects an electrical problem in the circuit controlling secondary air injection relay 'B'. The 'B' designation simply means this is the second relay in a system that uses more than one — commonly one relay for the air pump motor and another for the switching or shutoff valve, or on V-engines with two banks, one relay per bank. Which physical relay is 'B' varies by manufacturer, so identifying it in service data before testing is the first practical step.
The secondary air injection system exists purely for cold-start emissions. For the first 30 to 120 seconds after a cold start, an electric pump forces fresh air into the exhaust manifolds or directly into the cylinder heads. That extra oxygen lets unburned fuel in the hot exhaust continue to combust, which both reduces tailpipe hydrocarbons during the dirtiest part of the drive and heats the catalytic converter to light-off temperature far faster. Once the engine is warm the system shuts off completely and plays no further role.
Because the relay only operates during that brief cold-start window, P0419 is a code you can easily carry for months without noticing anything wrong. The PCM commands the relay, watches the circuit for the expected voltage response, and flags a fault when the circuit is open, shorted, or drawing wrong current. Typical root causes are a corroded relay or socket, a chafed or broken control wire, a burned relay contact, or a seized air pump whose locked-rotor current has damaged the relay contacts.
That last scenario is the one worth watching for. Secondary air pumps commonly fail when water gets into them — condensation freezing in cold weather, or a failed check valve letting hot exhaust and moisture back into the pump. A pump that has ingested water and seized draws enormous current, which welds or burns relay contacts. So when P0419 appears alongside P0410 or a pump-performance code, replacing only the relay tends to be a short-lived repair; the pump and the check valves need inspection too.
Common causes
- Failed or internally burned secondary air injection relay 'B'
- Corroded relay socket or relay terminals, common in underhood fuse boxes exposed to moisture
- Open, shorted, or chafed relay control wire between the PCM and the relay
- Blown fuse feeding the relay's load side
- Seized secondary air pump drawing excessive current and damaging the relay contacts
- Water intrusion into the pump or relay from a failed check valve
- Poor ground at the relay or at the air pump
- Failed PCM driver circuit, only after wiring and relay have tested good
Symptoms

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Look up which physical relay your manufacturer designates 'B' — on some vehicles it is the pump relay, on others the switching-valve relay or the bank 2 relay. Testing the wrong relay wastes the whole diagnosis.
- 2.Pull all stored codes. P0419 together with P0410 or a pump-performance code points toward a failed or seized pump rather than a simple relay fault.
- 3.Locate the relay in the underhood fuse box, pull it, and inspect both the relay pins and the socket terminals for corrosion, heat discoloration, or melted plastic.
- 4.Check the fuse feeding the relay's load circuit and verify battery voltage at the relay's power pin with the key on.
- 5.Measure the relay coil resistance and compare against specification, or swap in a known-good identical relay from a non-critical circuit as a quick test.
- 6.With the relay removed, check the PCM control wire for continuity to ground when commanded, and check the load-side wire for continuity to the pump or valve.
- 7.Command the secondary air pump on with a bidirectional scan tool during a cold start window and listen for the pump. No sound with good relay voltage points at the pump or its ground.
- 8.Inspect the air pump inlet and the check valves for water, rust, or exhaust contamination — a seized pump will keep destroying relays if it is not addressed.
- 9.After repair, clear the code and complete a cold-start drive cycle, since the secondary air monitor only runs once per cold start.
