P0450: Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Malfunction
The engine computer has detected a fault in the EVAP pressure sensor circuit — the sensor that measures pressure and vacuum inside the fuel tank so the computer can test for fuel-vapor leaks. The car drives normally, but the computer loses its ability to run EVAP leak tests until the sensor circuit is fixed.

What does P0450 mean?
P0450 sets when the ECM detects a general malfunction in the evaporative emission (EVAP) system pressure sensor circuit — the signal is missing, stuck, or outside the range the computer will accept. The EVAP system captures fuel vapor from the tank and stores it in a charcoal canister instead of letting it vent to the atmosphere, then burns it in the engine later. To prove the system is sealed, the computer periodically pulls a slight vacuum or pressure on the tank and watches how it decays — and the fuel tank pressure sensor is the instrument it watches. When that sensor's circuit fails, the computer can't run its leak tests at all.
This is the general 'circuit malfunction' entry in its family: P0451 flags a signal that's implausible (range/performance), while P0452 and P0453 flag a signal stuck low or high. P0450 is broader — an open, a short, a bad connection, or a dead sensor element can all land here. The sensor itself typically lives on top of the fuel tank or integrated into the fuel pump module, which makes access the hardest part of the job on many vehicles: some have a service hatch under the rear seat or trunk floor, others require dropping the tank.
Day to day, P0450 usually causes nothing you can feel. The engine runs normally because the pressure sensor is a monitoring instrument, not a control input. The real costs are downstream: an emissions test failure (the EVAP monitor will never set ready), occasionally a fuel smell if a genuine venting issue accompanies the sensor fault, and the risk that a real leak goes undetected while the computer is blind. It's a fix-it-soon code rather than a fix-it-now code — with the emissions test caveat being the deadline that usually matters.

Diagnostic steps

- 2.Locate the fuel tank pressure sensor for your vehicle (top of tank or fuel pump module) and check for a service access hatch before assuming the tank must drop.
- 3.Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, water intrusion, and rodent damage.
- 4.Read the sensor in live data with the fuel cap on and off — the reading should respond; a flatlined value points at the sensor or circuit.
- 5.Verify reference voltage and ground at the connector.
- 6.If the sensor is part of the fuel pump module, weigh replacing the sensor alone versus the module based on your vehicle's parts availability.
