P0492: Secondary Air Injection System Insufficient Flow Bank 2
The bank 2 side of the secondary air system did not deliver enough airflow during the cold-start window. The part that fails is usually inexpensive; what makes this code different from its bank 1 twin is where that part lives, because bank 2 is almost always the harder side to reach.

What does P0492 mean?
P0492 reports the same shortfall as P0491 on the other cylinder bank, but the practical experience of fixing it is different enough to be worth setting out, because packaging decides most of what this repair costs.
Bank 2 is rarely the convenient side. On the transverse V6 and V8 layouts that dominate front-wheel-drive vehicles, bank 2 is the rear bank, tucked against the firewall with the intake manifold, wiper cowl, or heater plumbing over the top of it. On longitudinal engines it tends to be the side crowded by the brake booster, the steering shaft, or turbocharger plumbing. Either way, the air pipe feeding it has to travel from a single pump, usually mounted at the front, all the way across or around the engine — so the bank 2 run is the longer one, with more joints, more slip fits, more clamps and more heat exposure than its bank 1 counterpart.
That physical asymmetry produces three consequences you can use. First, on quotes: an identical check valve costs the same in parts on either side, but the labour is not the same, and on vehicles where the bank 2 plumbing routes beneath the intake manifold the sixty-dollar part carries two or three hours of work. A quote for P0492 that matches a quote for P0491 on the same vehicle deserves a question. Second, on failure order: a longer, more convoluted pipe run holds more exhaust condensate and drains it worse, so on a vehicle destined to fail both check valves eventually, bank 2 commonly goes first. Third, and most useful of all, on triage: with one pump feeding both banks, P0492 arriving alone essentially clears the pump, because a failed pump starves both sides and sets both codes. P0491 and P0492 together is the pattern that points at the pump, the shared plumbing, or the shared electrical supply. That single distinction saves the most money on this code, since the pump is the most expensive part in the system and the check valve is among the cheapest.
One design detail matters on some vehicles. Where each bank has its own combination valve operated by engine vacuum through a shared solenoid and a tee, a cracked hose on one leg of the tee affects that bank only. It is a five-dollar cause of a code that is frequently answered with a several-hundred-dollar pump, and it takes a minute to check.
As with bank 1, the whole system only operates for a short window after a genuinely cold start, so any test has to be arranged around a cold engine rather than around the shop's schedule.
Common causes
- Failed or leaking bank 2 check valve, commonly the first of the pair to fail because of the longer pipe run
- Cracked or disconnected vacuum leg feeding the bank 2 combination valve
- Carbon-blocked air passage into the bank 2 cylinder head
- Split, chafed, or detached section of the long bank 2 air pipe
- Failed bank 2 combination or shut-off valve stuck closed
- Corroded electrical connector on a bank-specific control solenoid
- Exhaust condensate pooling in the low point of the bank 2 run and corroding through it
- Seized secondary air injection pump, which normally sets P0491 at the same time rather than P0492 alone
Symptoms

- Brief roughness or an uneven idle in the first seconds after a cold start
- Pump audible on cold start yet the code still sets, indicating a delivery problem rather than a supply problem
- Hissing or air noise from the rear or firewall side of the engine during the cold-start window
- P0491 appearing later as the second check valve follows the first
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Check whether P0491 is also stored. Both codes together point at the pump or the shared supply; P0492 on its own points at bank 2 hardware and largely clears the pump.
- 2.Arrange the test around a cold engine, ideally a first start of the day, since the system only runs for roughly thirty to ninety seconds after a cold start.
- 3.Listen for the pump on that cold start. If it runs clearly and only bank 2 is failing, the air is being produced and is not arriving, so work the bank 2 delivery path.
- 4.Trace the bank 2 air pipe end to end, looking for splits, chafe, detached slip joints, and low points where condensate can collect and rot the pipe from inside.
- 5.Inspect the vacuum leg to the bank 2 combination valve. Where a shared solenoid feeds both banks through a tee, one cracked leg produces a single-bank fault for a few dollars.
- 6.Remove and test the bank 2 check valve for one-way sealing, and look inside it for rust and soot.
- 7.Probe the air passage into the bank 2 head for carbon buildup, which is more likely on short-trip vehicles and high mileage.
- 8.Before committing to the job, establish how the bank 2 plumbing is routed on that specific engine — on layouts where it passes under the intake manifold the labour dominates the bill and changes what the repair is worth.

Parts are the same as bank 1 — a check valve at $40-$150, a vacuum hose or solenoid at $20-$120 — but labour is what separates this code from P0491. On accessible layouts the job is 1-2 hours. Where the bank 2 plumbing runs beneath the intake manifold or behind the engine, expect 2-4 hours, which is why an inexpensive valve can still produce a four-figure invoice. A secondary air injection pump, if both banks are affected, is $180-$600 in parts. Ask specifically how the bank 2 pipe is routed before accepting a quote, since that single fact drives most of the cost.
