P0497: Evaporative Emission System Low Purge Flow
The PCM commanded the EVAP purge valve open but didn't see the expected flow of fuel vapor into the intake. Usually a restriction — a clogged purge valve, a blocked line, or a saturated charcoal canister — rather than an electrical fault.

What does P0497 mean?
The EVAP system stores fuel vapor from the tank in a charcoal canister so it never reaches the atmosphere. Once the engine is warm and running under suitable conditions, the PCM opens the purge valve, and intake manifold vacuum draws that stored vapor into the engine to be burned. P0497 sets when the PCM commands purge flow and the system does not respond the way it should — the expected vacuum drop, pressure change, or fuel-trim shift simply doesn't appear.
The key thing to understand about P0497 is what it is not. It is not an electrical code. P0443, P0458, and P0459 cover the purge valve's wiring and driver circuit; those set when the PCM can't drive the solenoid correctly. P0497 says the electrical side is working — the valve is being commanded, and often it is even clicking — but the vapor isn't moving. That points at a restriction somewhere in the flow path, or at a valve that is electrically alive but mechanically stuck closed.
On most vehicles the PCM detects this through the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. It closes the vent valve, commands purge open, and watches for tank vacuum to build. If the vacuum doesn't develop, or develops far more slowly than the calibration allows, low purge flow is logged. On some platforms the PCM instead watches short-term fuel trim: opening purge should produce a small, characteristic trim change as extra hydrocarbons enter the intake, and no trim response means no flow.
The usual physical causes are a purge valve stuck closed or clogged with charcoal dust, a kinked, cracked, or collapsed purge line, a blocked or crushed vapor line between the canister and the engine, a charcoal canister that has broken down internally and packed its own outlet, or an FTP sensor that isn't reporting pressure accurately. Overfilling the tank — repeatedly topping off past the first click — is a well-documented way to flood the canister with liquid fuel and cause exactly this failure.
There are no driveability consequences worth worrying about. The engine runs normally; the code costs you an emissions test and leaves the check engine light on. The exception is a canister so saturated that it passes liquid fuel to the intake, which can cause a rich stumble right after refueling.
Common causes
- Purge valve stuck closed or restricted internally by charcoal dust (the leading cause)
- Kinked, cracked, collapsed, or disconnected purge line between the canister and the intake
- Blocked vapor line from the fuel tank to the charcoal canister
- Charcoal canister broken down internally or saturated with liquid fuel from chronic overfilling
- Faulty fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor reporting inaccurate readings, so the PCM never sees the expected vacuum
- Vent valve stuck open, preventing the system from pulling down during the test
- Rodent or road-debris damage to EVAP lines under the vehicle
- Restricted or plugged canister filter/inlet on vehicles that use one
Symptoms

- Rough idle or a brief stumble immediately after refueling on badly saturated canisters

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Pull all codes first. P0497 alongside a purge-valve circuit code (P0443/P0458/P0459) means the electrical fault comes first; P0497 alongside a large-leak code (P0455/P0442) changes the picture entirely.
- 2.Use a bidirectional scan tool to command the purge valve open with the engine idling. Listen for the click and watch short-term fuel trim — a healthy purge event produces an audible click and a noticeable trim shift.
- 3.Remove the purge valve and check that it flows air freely when energized and seals when de-energized. A valve that clicks but won't pass air is the classic P0497 finding.
- 4.Inspect the entire purge line from the valve to the intake and from the canister to the valve for kinks, crush damage, cracks, and disconnected fittings.
- 5.Check the vapor line from the tank to the canister for restriction — blow low-pressure shop air through it (disconnected at both ends) and confirm free flow.
- 6.Inspect the charcoal canister. Shake it: loose rattling charcoal or fuel dripping from the ports means the canister has broken down and must be replaced along with anything downstream that swallowed charcoal dust.
- 7.Watch live FTP sensor data during a commanded purge with the vent closed. No vacuum development confirms a flow restriction; a nonsensical FTP reading points at the sensor itself.
- 8.After any repair, clear the code and run the drive cycle that lets the EVAP monitor complete before declaring the fix good.
Repair cost

A purge valve is usually $30 to $120 in parts and often reachable in under an hour, so replacement typically runs $120 to $300. Replacing a cracked or kinked vapor line runs $80 to $250 depending on routing and whether the tank has to come down. A charcoal canister is the expensive branch: $150 to $400 for the part plus under-vehicle labor, putting a full canister job around $300 to $600. If the canister has broken down and pushed charcoal into the purge valve and lines, budget for replacing those too — otherwise the new canister fails the same way.
