P0498: Evaporative Emission System Vent Valve Control Circuit Low
The voltage on the EVAP vent valve control circuit is lower than the PCM expects — typically a short to ground, a shorted solenoid winding, or a driver-side fault. The engine runs normally, but the EVAP leak test can't run.

What does P0498 mean?
The EVAP vent valve is the system's breathing port. For most of its life it sits open, letting fresh air into the charcoal canister so the tank can equalize as fuel is consumed and so purge flow has somewhere to draw from. The PCM only closes it when it wants to seal the system for a leak test — trap a known volume, apply vacuum or pressure, and watch whether it holds.
P0498 is one of the two electrical-side codes for that valve. The PCM drives the vent solenoid, usually by switching its ground, and monitors the voltage on the control circuit to confirm the circuit behaves as expected. When the PCM commands the valve one way and sees a voltage that is too LOW for that state — the circuit pulled toward ground when it should be near battery voltage — it sets P0498.
In practice that means a short to ground somewhere in the control wire, a solenoid with internally shorted or collapsed windings, a chafed harness touching chassis metal, or a failed low-side driver inside the PCM itself. It does not mean the valve is mechanically stuck; that is what P0446 covers. P0498 is strictly about what the PCM sees electrically on the control wire.
Location matters for diagnosis. The vent valve almost always lives at the rear of the vehicle, at or near the charcoal canister, underneath the floor. That puts it directly in the path of road spray, salt, and standing water, and it makes the harness an attractive target for rodents. Corrosion inside the connector and chewed insulation are far more common here than they are for underhood components. On many trucks and SUVs the valve is mounted on the frame rail near the tank, where it collects everything the road throws at it.
Driveability is unaffected. The engine starts and runs exactly the same, power and fuel economy don't change, and there is no safety concern. What P0498 costs you is the EVAP readiness monitor: with the vent circuit faulted, the PCM cannot seal the system, so the leak test never completes and the vehicle will not pass an OBD-II readiness inspection. On a valve that ends up stuck closed, you may also notice difficulty refueling — the pump nozzle clicking off repeatedly because the tank can't vent.
Common causes
- EVAP vent solenoid with internally shorted windings
- Control wire shorted to ground from chafing against the frame, floor pan, or an exhaust component
- Corroded connector at the vent valve — the valve's under-vehicle mounting makes water intrusion common
- Rodent damage to the harness near the charcoal canister
- Wiring pinched or damaged during recent fuel tank, exhaust, or suspension work
- Water intrusion into the vent valve itself, especially after deep-water driving
- Backed-out or corroded terminal pins in the vent valve connector
- Failed low-side driver inside the PCM (rare — clear everything else first)
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on
- EVAP readiness monitor won't complete, so the vehicle fails an emissions readiness check
- No change in power, idle, starting, or fuel economy
- Fuel nozzle repeatedly clicking off during refueling if the valve ends up stuck closed
- Occasional fuel odor near the rear of the vehicle
- In rare cases, a deformed or 'sucked-in' feeling fuel tank if the vent stays sealed for a long time
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan for all codes. P0498 with P0499 over time, or with P0446, changes the diagnostic path — read freeze-frame data before touching anything.
- 2.Locate the vent valve, normally at the rear of the vehicle at or near the charcoal canister, and inspect it and its connector for corrosion, water, melted insulation, and rodent damage.
- 3.Disconnect the valve and measure resistance across its terminals. Most specify roughly 15 to 40 ohms — a reading well below spec indicates shorted windings.
- 4.With the valve unplugged and the key on, check the harness side for battery voltage on the supply pin. Missing voltage points at a fuse or an upstream open.
- 5.Check the control wire for a short to ground with the connector unplugged at both the valve and the PCM. Continuity to ground on that wire confirms a shorted harness.
- 6.Inspect the full harness run from the valve forward, paying attention to where it passes near the exhaust, frame rail, or suspension pickup points.
- 7.Command the vent valve closed with a bidirectional scan tool and listen for the click while watching the circuit voltage. No click plus a stuck-low reading supports a shorted solenoid.
- 8.Only after the solenoid, harness, and connector all test good should the PCM driver be suspected — confirm with a scope on the control circuit before condemning the module.
Repair cost

The vent valve itself is typically $30 to $110 in parts, and access is usually straightforward under the vehicle, so replacement generally runs $120 to $280. A short-to-ground repair in the harness runs $80 to $300 depending on how much of the run has to be opened up and re-loomed. Rodent damage across a long section near the canister can reach $450. PCM driver failure is rare but expensive — module replacement and programming runs well past $600, so exhaust every other possibility first.
