OBD-II trouble code
P04DB: Crankcase Ventilation System Disconnected
Application matters: The detection method depends on the installed crankcase ventilation system. Ford’s 2024–2025 gasoline OBD summary describes a P04DB-to-P2C90 transition for its covered PCV disconnect monitor. Preserve the code actually reported and use the exact engine, full DTC and applicable vehicle procedure; this is not a renumbering rule for every manufacturer.
The crankcase ventilation monitor detected a condition classified as disconnected. The code does not prove a hose is detached or establish whether the repair is plumbing, sensing or an applicable calibration update.

A code alone cannot establish whether driving is safe. Stop safely for a red brake or oil-pressure warning, overheating, severe misfire, stalling, or impaired braking or steering, and follow the owner's manual. Restraints faults can reduce crash protection even when the vehicle runs normally.

What does P04DB mean?
P04DB reports a crankcase ventilation disconnection condition. The ventilation system routes crankcase gases through the engine’s designed ventilation path, but its plumbing and monitoring method vary. A detached connection, damaged component or monitoring fault needs to be distinguished using the actual vehicle procedure. Do not treat every ventilation opening as the same downstream unmetered-air leak.
There is a specific software-service example: Ford TSB 17-0003 applies to 2016–2017 Fiesta with the 1.0L GTDI engine built on or before January 6, 2017. When its conditions apply and P04DB is stored, the procedure directs PCM reprogramming. That instruction is useful when checking calibration applicability; it does not certify every hose or ventilation component as intact, nor does it justify updating other vehicles without an applicable procedure.
Ford’s July 2024 summary also states that P04DB is being replaced by P2C90 in its covered PCV fresh-air disconnect monitor. Keep the identifier and suffix actually reported by the scan tool and select the current service information for that configuration. This Ford-specific transition does not change every manufacturer’s code assignment.
Fuel-trim data may support diagnosis on an applicable system, but its magnitude does not independently confirm or size a ventilation leak. Normal trims also do not establish that the disconnect monitor has passed. Preserve separate fuel-control faults and use the required monitor confirmation to assess the repair.
Possible causes
- A detached or damaged ventilation hose, tube or connection
- A leaking or incorrectly fitted ventilation component, housing or seal
- A fault in the sensing or circuit path used by the installed monitor
- A calibration condition covered by an applicable manufacturer service procedure
Symptoms
- Check-engine warning with P04DB recorded
- Rough or unstable idle on an affected engine
- A whistle, hiss or visible oil residue that needs its own assessment
- Companion mixture or ventilation-monitor faults
- No obvious running complaint at the time of the scan
Diagnostic steps
Save the full scan report, code status, and available freeze-frame data before clearing anything. Confirm the reporting module, any failure-type suffix, and the procedure for the exact vehicle. The steps below are an overview; use manufacturer specifications and safety procedures for testing.
- 1.Save the complete DTC, status, freeze-frame information and companion codes. Record the engine and recent ventilation or engine-bay work without treating the history as proof of a cause.
- 2.Use the code actually reported to select the vehicle procedure. On covered Ford applications, check the documented P04DB/P2C90 relationship and current calibration information rather than relabelling the scan result.
- 3.With the engine switched off and cooled, look only at safely accessible ventilation connections for visible detachment, damage or oil residue. Do not pull hoses, dismantle components or reach near fans, belts or other moving parts.
- 4.Have a qualified technician check bulletin applicability and follow the specified plumbing, sensing and circuit sequence. The Fiesta reprogramming instruction is limited to the listed vehicle conditions and does not clear unrelated defects.
- 5.Leave prescribed crankcase-pressure, flow, connected electrical tests and programming to the qualified repairer with the specified equipment. Do not plug a ventilation opening or improvise a running-engine test.
- 6.Evaluate fuel-control data and companion faults as directed, without using trim magnitude as a leak measurement. Repair the demonstrated fault and complete the actual monitor’s confirmation procedure.
Repair cost

A trouble code alone does not price the repair. Ask the shop to identify the confirmed fault and itemize diagnosis, parts, labor, programming or calibration, and taxes.

DIY vs shop
A qualified shop is recommended because this can involve manufacturer-grade tooling, training, or certification that most home setups do not have. Ask the technician what testing confirmed the repair.
