P0589: Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "B" Circuit
A general fault on the second of the two multiplexed cruise control switch circuits. The word that matters in the title is multi-function: several steering wheel buttons share one wire, which is why a single bad contact can upset every function on that circuit at once.

What does P0589 mean?
P0589 is the parent code for the second cruise control multi-function input circuit, and understanding what multi-function means explains almost everything about how the fault behaves.
Early cruise control systems ran one wire per button. Set, resume, coast, accelerate and cancel each had a dedicated conductor back to the module, which was simple to diagnose and impossible to package once steering wheels started carrying airbags, audio controls, phone controls and paddle shifters through a single rotating joint. Modern systems therefore multiplex: the buttons are wired as a resistor ladder, where each switch inserts a different resistance into one shared circuit. The module supplies a reference voltage through a pull-up and reads the voltage that comes back. No button pressed gives one voltage, set gives another, resume another, and so on. One wire, five or six functions, and a voltage table in the calibration that maps each band to a command.
Manufacturers commonly split those functions across two ladders rather than one, which is where the "A" and "B" designations come from. P0589 says the module found a general fault on the "B" ladder — a voltage that fits none of the defined bands, or a condition its more specific siblings do not describe. The finer members of the family exist for the specific cases: a stuck input, a value out of range, a low reading, or a high reading.
The consequence of the resistor-ladder design is the single most useful diagnostic fact on this page. Because every button on the circuit is measured as a voltage on the same wire, anything that adds unwanted resistance anywhere in the shared path shifts all of the bands at once. A corroded contact, an oxidised connector pin or a partly broken conductor does not disable one button; it moves every button's voltage upward until some land outside their windows and the module can no longer tell them apart. So a complaint of several cruise functions behaving oddly — resume acting like cancel, set working only sometimes — is characteristic of the shared path rather than of several failed switches.
The second structural fact is about how those signals get off a rotating steering wheel. They pass through the clockspring, a flat ribbon cable coiled inside a housing behind the wheel that unwinds and rewinds as the wheel turns. That ribbon is a genuine wear item, and it is also the conductor for the driver's airbag and usually the horn. Two things follow. First, a clockspring fault rarely arrives alone — cruise faults accompanied by an airbag warning light, an inoperative horn, or dead audio buttons on the wheel are pointing squarely at the clockspring, and that combination is a far more reliable indicator than any single symptom. Second, this repair sits inside the supplemental restraint system, so the airbag has to be disabled and handled correctly. That is not a caution to skim past; it is the reason this job is often better bought than attempted.

- Aftermarket steering wheel or switch assembly with resistance values that do not match the calibration
- Poor ground reference for the switch circuit, shifting every reported voltage
- Control module fault, uncommon and worth confirming only after the switch and clockspring are cleared
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with P0589 stored

- Cruise control engages but drops out on its own
- One steering wheel button doing nothing while others still work
- A button producing the wrong action, such as resume behaving like cancel
- Horn inoperative or airbag warning light on at the same time, which points at the clockspring

- Symptoms that change as the steering wheel is turned
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask what else on the steering wheel has stopped working. Horn, airbag light, and audio controls failing alongside cruise is the clockspring signature and is the fastest route to a correct diagnosis.
- 2.Check whether the fault changes with steering wheel position. A cruise fault that appears at full lock and clears when straight ahead is a damaged clockspring ribbon almost by definition.
- 3.Read the raw voltage on the "B" circuit with a scan tool while an assistant presses each button in turn. The voltage should step to a distinct, repeatable value for each function and return to its rest value in between.
- 4.Compare every band against specification rather than only checking that the voltage moves. Uniformly high readings across all buttons indicate added resistance in the shared path, not several failed switches.
- 5.Disconnect the switch and measure the resistance of each button directly at the switch connector. This separates a failed switch from a wiring fault in one step.
- 6.Inspect the switch assembly for corrosion, sticky residue, or evidence of a spilled drink, which is a surprisingly common cause on steering wheel controls.
- 7.Check the circuit's ground reference. A poor ground shifts every reported voltage upward and can put well-functioning buttons outside their windows.
- 8.Before disturbing anything behind the steering wheel, disable the supplemental restraint system according to the manufacturer's procedure and observe the specified waiting period. The clockspring carries the driver airbag circuit.
- 9.Check for the more specific siblings of this code in the same read. A stuck, range, low or high code alongside P0589 narrows the fault considerably.
