P0608: Control Module VSS Output "A" Malfunction
This is a rare kind of code: the control module is reporting a fault in a signal it is sending, not one it is reading. Output "A" is the primary vehicle speed feed to the rest of the car, so the driver usually notices this one before the scan tool does.

What does P0608 mean?
Almost every diagnostic trouble code describes a module unhappy with an input. P0608 describes the reverse, and understanding that inversion is most of the diagnosis.
On a modern vehicle the powertrain control module does not just consume vehicle speed — it distributes it. The raw speed source, whether a transmission output shaft sensor, a transfer case sensor or a value derived from the wheel speed sensors, is read once, cleaned up, and then re-transmitted as a buffered signal that other systems can use. That output is a square wave of a defined number of pulses per mile, and it is what feeds the speedometer, the cruise control logic, the shift strategy, speed-sensitive steering assist and, on many platforms, the transmission control module. Output "A" is the primary of those distribution circuits.
So P0608 is the module saying that its own broadcast is not doing what it commanded. It set an output high and did not see it go high; it drove a pulse train and read back something that does not match. That self-monitoring is why the code exists at all, and it is why the fault is not necessarily inside the module. A driver circuit is only as free as the wire attached to it, and if a downstream consumer has failed with an internal short, or the output wire has been grounded by chafe, the module's attempt to drive that line will be dragged flat and it will fault its own output. The code names the module because the module is the thing that noticed, not because the module is the thing that broke.
That distinction is worth holding onto, because P0608 attracts a reflexive PCM-replacement recommendation that is expensive and often wrong. The productive order is: check the wire, then check what is hanging off the wire, and only then question the module.
What makes this the loud member of the pair is where output "A" goes. Because it is the primary feed, its consumers are the ones the driver interacts with. A speedometer that reads zero or jumps erratically, cruise control that will not engage, a transmission that holds gears or shifts harshly because its shift schedule has lost the speed term, an ABS or traction control light triggered by a speed disagreement — these are immediate, obvious, and they show up together. The complaint typically arrives as "several things stopped working at once," which is exactly what a shared distribution circuit produces when it fails.
The reason this code is rated seriously despite the vehicle remaining drivable is that shift strategy is downstream of it. A transmission running without a trusted speed signal may default to a fixed gear or command line pressures intended for a different operating point, and sustained driving in that state is how a nuisance electrical fault turns into a mechanical repair. The car will get you home; it should not be left to accumulate weeks of that.

- Failed output driver inside the control module itself, confirmed only after the circuit is cleared
- Software calibration mismatch after a module replacement or reflash

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Compare the module's internal vehicle speed value against the speedometer reading and against a GPS speed reference. A module that knows the correct speed while the cluster does not confirms the fault is on the output side, not the input side.
- 2.Confirm there are no vehicle speed input codes stored alongside this one. An input fault upstream would explain the symptoms without any output circuit being at fault, and it must be resolved first.
- 3.Identify which consumers sit on the "A" output for this platform from the wiring diagram. The list of what stopped working narrows the failed section before any probe is used.
- 4.Back-probe the output at the module connector with an oscilloscope or a duty-cycle-capable meter while the vehicle is driven or the drive wheels are turned safely on a lift. A missing or flattened square wave at the source is the key measurement.
- 5.If the waveform is absent at the module, disconnect the downstream consumers one at a time and re-check. A signal that recovers when one module is unplugged has found a shorted input, not a bad PCM.
- 6.Measure resistance from the output wire to ground with the module disconnected. A low reading confirms the wire itself is grounded.
- 7.Check continuity of the output circuit end to end and inspect any splice, tap or previous repair in its path.
- 8.Verify module power and ground integrity with a voltage drop test under load before concluding the module has an internal fault.
- 9.Confirm the calibration matches the vehicle if a module was recently replaced or reflashed, since a pulses-per-mile mismatch presents as an output fault.

Diagnosis usually runs 1-2 hours because the circuit has to be traced between several modules. Repairing a chafed or grounded output wire is typically $90-$350. Replacing a downstream module that failed with a shorted input varies enormously by which one it is — an instrument cluster or transmission control module is commonly $300-$900 plus programming. Actual replacement of the powertrain control module is $400-$1,400 including the programming that makes it usable, and it should be the last item considered rather than the first. Insist the output circuit is scoped before any module is bought.
