P0633: Immobilizer Key Not Programmed - ECM/PCM
The engine controller did not receive a key code it recognises, so it refused to let the engine run. The usual result is a vehicle that cranks strongly and will not start — and in most cases the security system is working exactly as intended.

What does P0633 mean?
Behind almost every modern ignition key or push-button start sits a transponder: a tiny chip with an aerial and no battery of its own. When the key is presented, a coil around the ignition lock or in the start button assembly energises that chip with a magnetic field, the chip answers with a unique code, and the vehicle's immobilizer compares that code against the list it holds. If the answer is right, the immobilizer tells the engine controller it may proceed. P0633 means that permission never arrived in an acceptable form.
The part of that description worth dwelling on is that the transponder has no power source. It borrows energy from the field around the aerial, which is why a key with a completely flat remote battery still starts the car, and why the whole exchange only works over a few centimetres. That single fact explains a large share of real-world failures. A cracked or broken aerial ring around the lock cylinder cannot energise the chip. A key held slightly too far away in a push-button vehicle with a weak aerial cannot be read. And a keyring loaded with other transponders — a second car key, a building fob — can confuse the exchange badly enough that removing everything but the one key becomes a genuine diagnostic step.
Because of that, the most valuable test on this code needs no tools at all. Try every key you own. If one key starts the car and another does not, the fault belongs to the key that fails: a damaged or unprogrammed chip, or a key that has been through a washing machine or dropped hard enough to crack the transponder. If no key works, the key is not the problem and the fault lies in the aerial, the immobilizer module, the wiring between them, or the engine controller's own memory of the stored codes.
That last case is where the code overlaps with the module-configuration codes. An engine controller that has been replaced, reflashed or bench-programmed loses its record of which keys are authorised, and every key on the keyring will suddenly be rejected on a car where nothing physical has changed. If P0633 appears immediately after electronic work rather than out of nowhere, that history is the diagnosis.
Aftermarket installations deserve a mention because they cause a disproportionate share of these. Remote starters, alarms and tracking devices are frequently wired into the immobilizer circuit, sometimes with a bypass module holding a spare transponder. When one of those installations fails, corrodes, or is partially removed, the vehicle behaves as though the key is not recognised even though the original system is perfectly healthy.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Try every key you have, one at a time, with nothing else on the keyring. One key working and another failing localises the fault to the key itself and ends the diagnosis early.
- 2.Remove other transponders and fobs from the keyring before concluding a key is faulty, since a crowded keyring can genuinely interfere with the exchange.
- 3.Establish whether the no-start followed recent electronic work. A controller that was replaced, reflashed or tuned has lost its record of authorised keys, which explains every key failing at once.
- 4.Check battery condition and cranking voltage. A weak battery can drop system voltage far enough during cranking to corrupt the security handshake, which produces this code without any actual security fault.
- 5.Inspect the aerial ring around the ignition lock or start button for cracks, chafing or a disconnected plug. It is a small, fragile component that has to work at very short range, and it is a common physical failure.
- 6.Look for aftermarket remote start, alarm or bypass wiring spliced into the immobilizer circuit. These are a disproportionate cause and are often easiest to diagnose by returning the wiring to standard.
- 7.Scan the immobilizer and body modules as well as the engine controller. The complete picture is usually spread across more than one of them.
- 8.Watch the immobilizer telltale during a start attempt. Its pattern is frequently a coded fault indication in its own right on many manufacturers.
- 9.If a key must be programmed, expect to prove ownership and to observe any security wait timer the manufacturer imposes, and confirm beforehand whether a dealer-only code is required for this vehicle.
Repair cost
$60 – $1,500
The key blank is rarely the expensive part. Cutting and programming a replacement transponder key typically runs $100 to $400 at a locksmith or dealer, with proximity fobs at the higher end. Programming an existing key back into a replaced controller is usually $75 to $200 if the shop already has the module out. An aerial ring is $50 to $250 fitted. If every key is lost, or the immobilizer module itself has failed, the job climbs to $500 to $1,500 because the module may need replacing and re-marrying to the vehicle. Removing a failed aftermarket bypass installation is often the cheapest fix on the list and worth checking for first.
