P0645: A/C Clutch Relay Control Circuit

What does P0645 mean?
The most valuable thing to understand about P0645 is what it does not accuse. The engine module does not power the compressor clutch directly. A clutch coil draws several amps, far more than a module output is built to carry, so the design inserts a relay: the module sinks a few tens of milliamps through the relay's coil, the relay's contacts close, and those contacts carry the real current from a fused feed to the clutch. P0645 is a fault on the control side of that arrangement — the coil circuit the module talks to. It says nothing at all about the compressor, the refrigerant, or the clutch itself.
That distinction has real money attached to it. An air conditioning system that has stopped working, combined with a stored code, sends a lot of owners toward compressor quotes. The component actually implicated here is usually a relay in the underhood fuse box costing less than a tank of fuel. Before anything else is considered, the relay and its socket deserve to be ruled out.
The module detects this fault by watching the voltage on its own output pin. With the relay coil connected and the driver switched off, that pin should float up toward battery voltage through the coil winding. When the driver switches on, it should be pulled down to near zero. Any behaviour outside that pattern — a pin that sits at nothing when it should float, one that will not come down when commanded, or one whose current draw does not match a coil — tells the module something is wrong without necessarily indicating which direction. P0645 is the general code stored when the module rejects the circuit without a clean high or low signature.
This circuit also carries a hazard that most control circuits do not, and it explains a share of repeat failures. Both the relay coil and the clutch coil are inductors, and switching an inductor off generates a reverse voltage spike. Manufacturers manage this with a suppression diode across the coil. When that diode fails open, every disengagement sends a spike back into the module's driver, and drivers do eventually die from it. If a module output has failed on this circuit, check the diode before fitting the replacement relay, or the new part will simply take the same abuse.
One diagnostic convenience is genuinely unique to this family. Relays in a modern underhood fuse box are frequently physically identical to several others in the same box — horn, fuel pump, rear defogger, cooling fan. Swapping the suspect relay with a known-working identical one takes half a minute, requires no tools, and either resolves the fault or eliminates the relay from consideration. Very few circuits on a vehicle offer a test that cheap.
Common causes
- Failed A/C compressor clutch relay — the single most common cause and the cheapest to rule out
- Corroded, loose or heat-damaged relay socket terminals in the underhood fuse box
- Open, shorted or chafed control wire between the module and the relay coil
- Failed suppression diode across the relay or clutch coil, allowing voltage spikes back into the module driver
- Poor ground for the relay circuit or a corroded engine bay ground point
- Water intrusion into the underhood fuse box from a failed seal or a blocked drain
- Shorted A/C compressor clutch coil overloading the relay contacts until the relay fails
- Module output driver failure, which is the last conclusion rather than the first
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with P0645 stored
- Air conditioning blows warm and the compressor clutch never engages
- Compressor clutch that engages intermittently or clicks in and out unpredictably
- No audible click from the underhood fuse box when the A/C button is pressed
- Occasionally, a compressor clutch that stays engaged even with the air conditioning switched off
- Cooling fans not coming on with the air conditioning request, since fan staging is often tied to the same command
- Slight idle change missing when A/C is requested, because the compensation never happens
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Locate the A/C clutch relay in the underhood fuse box using the lid diagram, and swap it with an identical relay from a non-essential circuit such as the horn or rear defogger. If the fault follows the relay, you are done in under a minute for no money at all.
- 2.Command the A/C clutch relay on and off with a bidirectional scan tool while listening at the fuse box. A crisp click each way means the module, the control wire and the relay coil are all doing their jobs and the problem is downstream on the load side.
- 3.Pull the relay and inspect the socket terminals with a light. Heat discolouration, spread terminals and green corrosion are common in this box and produce intermittent behaviour that no amount of relay replacement fixes.
- 4.Back-probe the module's control wire at the relay socket. Key on with the compressor not commanded, it should read close to battery voltage through the coil; with the compressor commanded, it should drop to near zero. A pin stuck at either end tells you which direction the fault runs.
- 5.Measure the relay coil's resistance across its control terminals. A typical automotive relay coil reads in the region of 50 to 120 ohms. Effectively zero or infinite condemns the relay outright.
- 6.Check the fused feed to the relay contacts and the wiring on to the clutch coil before finishing. A blown fuse or an open on the load side does not itself cause P0645, but finding one alongside the code usually points at a shorted clutch coil that will destroy the next relay too.

A replacement relay is a $10-$40 part and many owners fit one themselves, making $40-$120 the realistic total when the relay is the fault. Repairing a corroded or heat-damaged fuse box socket runs $120-$300 depending on whether individual terminals can be replaced or the whole block needs work. Tracing and repairing a chafed control wire sits at $120-$280. If a shorted compressor clutch coil is what killed the relay, that is a separate repair entirely and is priced with the compressor. Diagnosis alone is $80-$150.
