What does P0655 mean?

P0655 concerns the red engine temperature warning — the thermometer-in-waves symbol, or on some vehicles a lamp reading HOT or ENGINE HOT. The module has examined the circuit that drives it and found it open, shorted, or drawing a current that does not correspond to a working lamp.

The honest way to describe the consequence is that this fault costs nothing until the moment it costs a great deal. A dead cruise indicator inconveniences you today. A dead overheat lamp does nothing at all, right up until a hose splits, a thermostat sticks shut, a water pump impeller lets go or a fan stops turning — and then it removes the one warning that would have had you off the road within a mile. Aluminium cylinder heads warp quickly and head gaskets fail shortly afterwards. The gap between the first warning and permanent damage is measured in minutes, which is why the warning exists and why losing it matters more than the price of the bulb suggests.

What sharpens this considerably is a design trend most owners are unaware of. Manufacturers have progressively deleted the coolant temperature gauge from the instrument cluster, replacing it with a pair of lamps — one blue for a cold engine, one red for a hot one — or with a gauge that is heavily damped and parked in the middle of its travel across a wide band of real temperatures so that customers stop asking questions about normal variation. On a vehicle with no gauge, this lamp is the only coolant temperature information the driver will ever receive. There is no needle to glance at, no gradual climb to notice. The lamp works or the driver finds out when steam appears. Establishing whether the vehicle on the ramp has a real gauge changes how urgent this repair is, and it takes one look at the dashboard.

The free confirmation is the key-on bulb check. Switch the ignition on without starting and every warning lamp should illuminate for a couple of seconds so the driver can see it is capable of lighting. A red temperature lamp that does not join in has confirmed the code without a scan tool, and it is the same observation that will find the fault again after the repair.

One clarification prevents a wasted diagnosis. P0655 is a circuit code about driving a lamp. It does not mean the engine is hot, and it is not a coolant temperature sensor code — those sit in the P0115 to P0119 family and describe a sensor reading that is out of range or implausible. Reading a normal coolant temperature on a scan tool does not clear this code, and it should not, because the sensor and the lamp are two separate things that happen to concern the same subject.

  • Data network fault where the warning is rendered in software from a message
  • Water intrusion behind the dashboard from a leaking windscreen seal or blocked cowl drain
  • Cluster or module software mismatch following a replacement or reprogramming

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on with P0655 stored and the engine running at normal temperature

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Switch the ignition on without starting and watch the red temperature warning through the bulb check. A lamp that does not illuminate for those couple of seconds confirms the fault before anything is connected.
  2. 2.Look at the dashboard and establish whether this vehicle has a coolant temperature gauge at all. If it does not, this lamp is the driver's only temperature warning and the repair moves up the priority list accordingly.
  3. 3.Read live coolant temperature on a scan tool and confirm the engine is genuinely running at normal temperature, so that a real cooling fault is not being masked by attention on the lamp circuit.
  4. 4.Check for coolant temperature sensor codes in the P0115 to P0119 range. Those describe a different fault and need resolving on their own terms.
  5. 5.Consult the wiring diagram and determine whether the warning is a bulb on a dedicated module output or an icon rendered by the cluster from a network message.
  6. 6.On a hard-wired lamp, back-probe the module output and command the lamp on with a scan tool if the function exists, confirming the pin switches as instructed.
  7. 7.If the lamp is stuck on, disconnect the module and test the control wire for a short to ground rather than leaving the driver fighting the short.
  8. 8.Perform a voltage drop test on the cluster ground under load. A degraded ground will pass a continuity check and still prevent the circuit behaving correctly.
  9. 9.Inspect and reseat the cluster connector, looking for corrosion, spread terminals and pins pushed back into the housing, and check behind the dashboard for water tracks.
  10. 10.After repair, verify the lamp illuminates during the key-on check and extinguishes with the engine running, since that sequence is the whole point of the circuit.

Diagnosis is typically 0.5-1.5 hours. A replacement bulb in a cluster that permits bulb service is $5-$25 in parts with 0.5-1.5 hours to remove and refit the cluster. Repairing an open or shorted lamp wire behind the dashboard is $120-$400 depending on trim removal. Connector or terminal repair runs $90-$250. A cluster with a failed telltale driver or cracked solder joints is commonly rebuilt for $150-$400 including removal and refitting, which avoids the odometer programming a replacement cluster would require. A failed driver stage inside the control module means module replacement and programming at $400-$1,100 and is the least likely outcome. Worth adding: if the vehicle has no coolant temperature gauge, this is one of the few lamp circuits where paying for the repair promptly is straightforwardly cheaper than the head gasket it exists to prevent.

If your vehicle uses lamps instead of a gauge — increasingly common — then this lamp was your only temperature warning and you now have none. On those vehicles the sensible approach is to treat it as a near-term repair, keep journeys short, and check the coolant level and look under the car for leaks before setting off.

Why does a dead warning lamp deserve a repair bill?

Because of what it is insuring against. Overheating damages engines faster than almost any other fault: aluminium cylinder heads warp, head gaskets fail, and on the worst outcomes the engine is not economically repairable. The warning lamp exists to give the driver the few minutes of notice needed to pull over before that happens, and those minutes are the difference between a burst hose and a rebuild. Spending a couple of hundred on a lamp circuit to protect against a four-figure engine repair is one of the clearer value calculations on any dashboard fault, and it is the reason this code deserves more attention than its symptoms suggest.

The lamp is on all the time but the engine is cold. Why?

A warning lamp that will not extinguish usually means the control wire has shorted to ground somewhere between the module and the cluster. The module switches these lamps on by connecting the circuit to ground, so an accidental ground connection anywhere along the wire achieves exactly the same thing and the module has no way to turn it off. Chafed insulation where the harness crosses a bracket or a dashboard frame is the classic location. The module notices that the circuit does not respond to being commanded off, which is what sets P0655. The test is to disconnect the module and check the wire for continuity to ground with the circuit isolated.
