What does P0688 mean?

The control circuit and the sense circuit are two different wires doing two different jobs, and confusing them is what makes this block of codes frustrating. Control is the command: the module tells the relay to close. Sense is the confirmation: a separate input wired to the relay's output side, so the module can read back whether the contacts actually closed and battery voltage really appeared.

P0688 is a fault on the confirmation, not on the command. The relay closed, power flowed, the engine started, and the module simply could not see it happen.

That is why this is the strangest page in the block to read. There is usually nothing wrong with how the vehicle drives. No stall, no hard start, no hesitation, no warning beyond the light itself. It is entirely normal for a P0688 to be discovered by a scan before an emissions test, during a pre-purchase inspection, or after someone plugged in a reader for an unrelated reason — the fault has been stored for months and nobody noticed.

The diagnosis has an unusually clean shape because the fault is a mismatch between two measurements you can take with the same meter within a minute of each other. Measure voltage at the relay's output — at the fuse it feeds, for instance — with the key on. You should find battery voltage there, because the vehicle is running. Then measure at the module's sense pin. If the first reading is full voltage and the second is nothing, you have already localised the fault to the run of wire between those two points. The difference between the two readings is the diagnosis.

That wire is worth understanding physically. It carries almost no current, because it only feeds a high-impedance input inside the module. Low-current circuits fail differently from power circuits: they do not melt or burn, they corrode quietly and open at a terminal, and there is never any heat damage to point you at the spot. So the inspection here is about connectors and pins rather than about scorched insulation. Check the module connector, check the fuse box terminal at the relay's output side, and look for the dull green film that a low-current contact will never burn through.

One genuine hazard is worth naming despite the mild rating. Because the module cannot confirm its own power supply, some vehicles respond to this code with a default or limp strategy, and a few will refuse to enter certain functions. Add to that the risk of misdiagnosis — a technician looking only at the code text may replace a perfectly good relay or, worse, a module — and a cheap wiring repair becomes an expensive one.

  • Open or broken sense wire between the relay output and the PCM sense pin
  • Corroded or backed-out terminal at the PCM connector on the sense circuit
  • Corrosion at the fuse box terminal that feeds the sense line
  • Blown fuse in the sense circuit on vehicles that fuse it separately
  • Harness damage from a previous repair, an accessory installation, or rodent activity
  • Failed sense input inside the PCM, which is uncommon and should be proven last

  • Check engine light with P0688 stored and no driveability complaint whatsoever
  • Code found during an emissions test, pre-purchase inspection or unrelated scan
  • Occasional extended crank on some applications
  • Reduced power or default operating strategy on vehicles that respond to this fault
  • System voltage parameter on a scan tool reading zero or implausibly low while the engine runs
  • Code returns after clearing without any other symptom appearing

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Confirm the relay is actually working before touching the sense circuit — if the vehicle starts and runs, it is.
  2. 2.With the key on, measure voltage at the relay's output side, at the fuse box terminal it feeds. Battery voltage here is expected and confirms the relay closed.
  3. 3.Measure voltage at the PCM's sense pin with the same key state. Full voltage at the relay and nothing at the module localises the fault to the wire between them.
  4. 4.Check continuity end to end on that wire with both ends disconnected, which distinguishes a broken conductor from a bad connection at either termination.
  5. 5.Inspect both terminations closely for corrosion and for terminals that have backed out of the connector body. Low-current circuits fail this way and leave no heat damage as a clue.
  6. 6.Check any fuse dedicated to the sense circuit, since some applications protect it separately from the main relay output.
  7. 7.If the wire and both terminations are proven good, the module's sense input is the remaining candidate — but confirm it rather than assuming it.

The real financial risk on this code is misdiagnosis — replacing a working relay or a working module because the code text mentions them. PCM replacement with programming runs $600-$1,500 and is very rarely the correct answer here.

It is a real fault, just not one you feel. The sense circuit only reports back to the module; it carries no power to anything you use. So the relay works, the engine runs, and the only consequence is that the module cannot confirm its own supply. Can I keep driving with P0688?

Generally yes. Nothing on this circuit affects how the vehicle drives or creates a safety risk, which is unusual for a code in this family. Get it repaired at your convenience rather than urgently — but do get it repaired, because it will not clear itself and it blocks emissions testing.

What is the difference between the control circuit and the sense circuit?
