P0727: Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal
No engine speed value is reaching the transmission control module at all — not a wrong number, but nothing. This is the most clear-cut member of the engine-speed-input family and usually means an open circuit, an unplugged connector, or a dead crankshaft position sensor.

What does P0727 mean?
P0727 sets when the control module that needs engine speed receives none, while everything else it can see says the engine is clearly running. Engine speed is the reference the transmission uses to time shifts, judge torque converter slip, and set line pressure, so its complete absence is not a subtle fault — the module knows immediately that a required input is missing.
This is the "nothing there" end of the P0725 through P0728 family. P0726 means a value arrived and was implausible. P0728 means it keeps cutting out. P0727 means the circuit is silent. That is good news diagnostically, because a fault that is present continuously can be found with straightforward electrical tests rather than the road tests and wiggle tests an intermittent code demands.
On most vehicles engine speed originates at the crankshaft position sensor, is processed by the engine control module, and is passed to the transmission control module either on a dedicated hard-wired circuit or as a data bus message. A complete absence of signal points to a break somewhere along that path: a failed crankshaft position sensor, an open or shorted wire, a connector that has come apart or corroded through, a blown fuse feeding the sensor, or a module that has lost power or ground. On vehicles where the transmission module is mounted inside or on the transmission, a case pass-through connector that has been leaking fluid up the harness is a well-known cause. A failed module driver or receiver is possible but sits at the end of the list, not the start.
With no engine speed reference, the transmission stops trying to be clever. Torque converter lock-up is disabled, shift scheduling drops to a conservative default that commands high line pressure so nothing can slip, and most vehicles enter a limp mode holding a single gear. The classic complaint is shifts that bang rather than blend, plus a noticeable fuel economy drop from the loss of lock-up. On some vehicles the tachometer goes dead as well, which is a strong hint that the problem is upstream at the crankshaft sensor rather than in the transmission wiring. The vehicle will normally still move, but sustained driving on high line pressure and mistimed shifts wears clutches, so this warrants prompt attention.

- Connector unplugged, damaged, or corroded through at either module
- Failed crankshaft position sensor producing no signal at all
- Blown fuse feeding the sensor or the receiving module
- Loss of power or ground at the transmission control module
- Severely damaged or missing reluctor / tone ring teeth leaving the sensor nothing to read
- Rodent damage or chafe-through in the underhood harness
- Transmission fluid contamination in the case pass-through connector breaking the circuit
- Data bus fault on vehicles where engine speed is transmitted as a bus message
- Failed control module (last on the list — verify wiring, power, ground, and the crank sensor first)
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, commonly with a transmission or wrench warning
- Harsh, banging shifts or a transmission stuck in one gear
- Torque converter lock-up not engaging

- Tachometer reading zero or dead on some vehicles

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Pull codes from both the engine and transmission modules. A crankshaft position sensor code stored alongside P0727 tells you the signal never existed rather than never arrived.
- 2.Check whether the tachometer works. A dead tach with P0727 strongly implicates the crankshaft position sensor or its circuit rather than the wiring between modules.
- 3.Compare the engine RPM value in the engine module's live data against the engine RPM the transmission module reports. If the engine module shows a valid number and the transmission module shows zero, the fault lives between them.
- 4.Check the fuses feeding the sensor and both modules before doing any wire tracing.
- 5.Unplug both ends of the engine speed circuit and perform an end-to-end continuity test. An open circuit confirms the fault and localizes it.
- 6.Check the circuit for a short to ground with both ends disconnected. A dead short pulls the signal down as effectively as an open breaks it.
- 7.Inspect the connectors at both modules and at the crankshaft position sensor for corrosion, backed-out pins, and terminals that have lost tension.
- 8.Inspect the transmission case pass-through connector for fluid contamination, which means fluid has likely wicked up the wires toward the module.
- 9.Voltage-drop test module power and ground rather than relying on a continuity check.
- 10.If a scope is available, capture the crankshaft position sensor pattern. A clean square wave that scales with cranking speed proves the sensor is fine and moves suspicion downstream.
- 11.Repair the confirmed open or failed component, clear codes, and road test to confirm normal shifting and lock-up return.
