P0739: TCM Engine Speed Output Circuit High
The voltage on the circuit that carries engine speed to the transmission control module is stuck higher than expected — usually an open circuit or a short to power. The transmission loses its RPM reference and defaults to firm, mistimed shifting.

What does P0739 mean?
P0739 is the high-voltage mirror of P0738. The engine control module (ECM) calculates engine RPM from the crankshaft position sensor and outputs it to the transmission control module (TCM), which needs that number to choose shift points, set line pressure, and decide when to lock the torque converter. P0739 sets when the TCM measures a voltage on that circuit that sits above the expected range.
On a signal wire, voltage goes high for two main reasons. The first is an open circuit: with nothing pulling the line down, the input floats up to the module's internal pull-up reference and sits there. The second is a short to a power source — a chafed wire touching a battery or ignition feed, or a connector flooded with water bridging the signal pin to an adjacent powered pin. An unplugged connector at either module produces exactly the same symptom as a broken wire, so the very first thing to check is that nothing was left disconnected after recent work.
The distinction between an open circuit and a short to power matters because they are found differently. An open shows up as infinite resistance on an end-to-end continuity check with both connectors unplugged. A short to power shows up as voltage present on the signal wire with both connectors unplugged and the key on — a wire that should be dead but is not. Doing both tests takes minutes and eliminates most of the guesswork.
As with the rest of this family, note carefully what P0739 is not. It is not the transmission output shaft speed sensor (P0720 through P0723), and it is not a fluid or hydraulic fault. When the TCM cannot see valid engine speed, it falls back to a conservative default shift schedule that commands high line pressure so the clutches cannot slip. Drivers experience that as abrupt, banging shifts, sometimes with the transmission holding a single gear in limp mode. It will usually get you home, but the mistimed shifting is hard on the clutch packs, so it deserves prompt attention.

- Connector left unplugged at the ECM, TCM, or a harness junction after recent service
- Short to a battery or ignition power source from a chafed wire
- Water or corrosion in a connector bridging the signal pin to a powered pin
- Broken conductor inside intact insulation, common where the harness flexes
- Backed-out or spread terminal losing contact in the module connector
- Failed ECM output driver stuck in the high state
- Failed TCM input circuit (rare — confirm the wiring first)
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, usually with a transmission or wrench warning
- Harsh, abrupt shifts and incorrect shift timing
- Transmission stuck in limp mode holding a single gear
- Torque converter clutch never locking up, reducing highway fuel economy
- Tachometer behaving erratically or reading zero on some vehicles
- No speedometer-related symptoms, which helps distinguish this from output speed sensor codes
- Companion P0700 stored by the TCM
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm every connector related to recent work is fully seated and latched. An unplugged module connector produces this code exactly.
- 2.Compare the ECM's RPM PID with the RPM value the TCM reports. A valid ECM value alongside a missing TCM value isolates the fault to the circuit between them.
- 3.With both module connectors unplugged and the key on, check for voltage on the signal wire. Any voltage present confirms a short to power.
- 4.With the key off and both connectors unplugged, check end-to-end continuity on the signal wire. Infinite resistance confirms an open.
- 5.Trace the harness for chafe points against brackets, the block, and the transmission bellhousing, paying attention to any spot where it flexes.
- 6.Inspect connector faces for green corrosion, water staining, and terminals pushed back into the housing; a backed-out pin reads open even though the wire is intact.
- 7.Check the transmission case pass-through connector for fluid contamination if the TCM is mounted on or in the transmission.
- 8.Scope the ECM output while cranking or running. A line that stays high and never toggles with correct wiring points at the ECM driver.
