This is one of very few internal transmission faults you can prove in your hand on a bench. It is also the one where a new solenoid most often sticks in exactly the same place, because the aluminium bore it lives in has worn.

What does P0762 mean?

P0762 records that shift solenoid C's element remained applied after the controller stopped asking for it. What makes this code unusual among transmission faults is not the failure itself but how conclusively it can be confirmed, and how often the part everyone blames turns out to be the wrong thing to replace.

Start with the confirmation, because almost nothing else inside an automatic transmission offers it. Most internal faults are inferred: you reason from ratios, pressures and symptoms toward a conclusion, and you find out whether you were right after the unit is reassembled. A shift solenoid is different. Once it is out, it can be tested on a bench with a regulated supply and a source of low-pressure air. Apply rated voltage and the valve should shift audibly and pass or block air as designed. Remove the voltage and it should return every time. A solenoid that will not return with no current in the coil is proved faulty in your hand, not argued about. Repeating the test warm, after the coil has been energised for a minute or two, is worth doing as well, since a marginal one will often behave when cold and hang when hot. This is a definitive answer obtained before any decision about a rebuild has to be made, which is a rare luxury in this part of the vehicle.

Now the part that explains the repeat failures. A shift solenoid's valve slides inside a bore machined into the valve body, and valve bodies are aluminium — soft, and easy for circulating debris to score. When a bore has worn oval or picked up a raised burr, the clearance the valve needs is gone, and it will hang open regardless of the condition of the solenoid fitted into it. So the common and frustrating sequence with this code is a new solenoid, a few hundred miles of correct operation while the fresh parts bed in, and then the identical code again. If that has happened, the solenoid was almost certainly never the fault. The repair in that case is the bore: a valve body that has been reamed and sleeved by a specialist, or a replacement valve body. Fitting a third solenoid will produce the same result as the second.

The third thing worth understanding before agreeing to a quote is how these parts are sold, because it changes the arithmetic in a way that is not obvious. On most modern transmissions shift solenoids are not individually available. They come as a pack, or bolted to a valve body assembly that is only supplied complete. Even where a single solenoid can be bought, the labour to reach it — fluid out, pan off, filter off, valve body dropped or partially dismantled — is identical whether you change one solenoid or every solenoid in the unit.
