What does P0790 mean?

Every other code in this stretch of the P07xx range points somewhere inside the transmission — a solenoid, a shaft speed sensor, a hydraulic circuit. P0790 points at the cabin. The normal and performance switch is the control the driver uses to ask for a sportier shift pattern: firmer, later upshifts and earlier downshifts, at some cost to smoothness and economy. It is an input, not an actuator. The transmission controller reads its state, picks a shift map accordingly, and does nothing else with it. When the controller cannot make sense of what that input is telling it, it stores this code and falls back to the normal map.

That single fact — input rather than actuator, cabin rather than gearbox — is why P0790 is graded far lower than its neighbours and why it is the cheapest code in the block by a wide margin. Nothing is being commanded incorrectly. No clutch is being applied at the wrong pressure. The transmission is shifting on its default schedule, which is the schedule it uses most of the time anyway, and there is no mechanical consequence to leaving it that way. The repair is usually a switch, a connector or a length of wire, all of which are reachable from inside the vehicle with hand tools.

Before hunting for a switch, establish that the vehicle has one. This is the caveat that saves the most wasted time on this code.
