A manual-transmission-only code, and one of the very few where the failed part exists purely to make the car worse to drive. Which changes the calculation about whether to fix it or delete it.

What does P0803 mean?
This is a manual transmission code, which already sets it apart from almost everything else in the P07xx and P08xx blocks. Skip shift — sold under names like CAGS, Computer Aided Gear Selection — is a fuel economy device. Under a narrow set of conditions, typically light throttle, a warm engine and a road speed in a specific low band, a solenoid on the transmission energises and mechanically blocks the shifter from entering second and third, forcing the driver from first straight into fourth. It exists because those particular conditions are the ones the official fuel economy test cycle uses, and skipping to a taller gear there improves the measured number. P0803 sets when the powertrain module detects that the circuit driving that solenoid is not electrically behaving as expected — open, shorted, or drawing the wrong current.
That origin is worth knowing because it makes this a genuinely unusual code to hold: the component that has failed exists to restrict the driver, not to protect the engine or the transmission. Nothing about the transmission's strength, longevity or shift quality depends on it. If the solenoid stops working entirely, the gearbox behaves exactly as it would in a car that never had the feature — you can select second and third whenever you want, and many owners regard that as an improvement rather than a fault. Nothing is wearing out and nothing is at risk.
The failure mode that does deserve attention is the opposite one, where the solenoid or its circuit leaves the lockout engaged when it should not be. Being forced out of second and third at low speed means pulling away and immediately having to use fourth, which lugs the engine, loads the clutch on every take-off and makes the car genuinely unpleasant and slightly unsafe in traffic where you need to accelerate promptly. That is not a code to leave for months, and it is also the version most likely to be misread as a clutch or a shifter problem.
On the electrical side there is nothing exotic. A module driver, a short run of harness, and a solenoid mounted on the transmission case. Because the solenoid lives on the gearbox it takes heat from the exhaust, road spray from underneath, and vibration continuously, and its connector is the single most common failure point — far more common than the coil itself. A green or crusty terminal there explains most of these codes. The wiring between the connector and the module is worth inspecting where it passes near the exhaust or a bracket.
One thing to say honestly, because it is a common real-world situation rather than a hypothetical. Skip shift is widely disabled, either by unplugging the solenoid or by fitting a small resistor plug sold for the purpose. Unplugging it will set this code and leave the malfunction indicator lamp on permanently, which matters in any jurisdiction where an illuminated lamp is itself an inspection failure or where readiness monitors are checked. The resistor-plug approach exists precisely because it satisfies the module's current check while defeating the lockout, so the lamp stays off. Whether that is acceptable is a decision about local emissions rules rather than about mechanics — but if the car has this code and someone has been under it recently, look at the solenoid connector before diagnosing anything, because you may be looking at a deliberate modification rather than a fault.

- Solenoid deliberately unplugged or bypassed to defeat the lockout, which sets the code as a side effect
- Wiring chafed or melted where the harness runs near the exhaust on its way to the transmission
- Open or shorted conductor between the powertrain module and the solenoid
- Blown fuse on the circuit supplying the solenoid
- Poor ground affecting the solenoid circuit
- Water intrusion into the connector after driving through deep water or a winter of salted roads
- Failed driver output in the powertrain control module, which is uncommon and should be concluded last
- Damage to the connector or harness during clutch, transmission or exhaust work
Symptoms
- Check engine light with no change in how the car drives
- Skip shift lockout no longer operating, so second and third are freely available where they used to be blocked
- Lockout stuck engaged, forcing the shifter out of second and third at low speed
- Engine lugging or bogging because fourth has to be used immediately after pulling away
- Clutch slipping or shuddering from repeatedly taking off in too tall a gear
- Upshift indicator lamp behaving oddly, though that lamp has its own separate circuit and code
- Shifter feeling notchy or blocked when moving from first toward second
- Fault appearing after clutch, transmission or exhaust work
- Code returning immediately after clearing, with no drivability change at all
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm the vehicle actually has a manual transmission and a skip shift system. This code has no meaning on an automatic and its presence there points at a mismatched module calibration.
- 2.Inspect the solenoid connector on the transmission first. Corrosion or damage there accounts for most of these codes and costs nothing to look at.
- 3.Check whether the solenoid has been deliberately unplugged or a bypass plug fitted. Someone may have disabled the feature on purpose, in which case this is a modification rather than a fault.
- 4.Measure resistance across the solenoid coil at the connector and compare it to specification. An open coil and a disconnected connector produce the same code.
- 5.Command the solenoid with a bidirectional scan tool if available and listen for it operating, which confirms the driver and the coil in one test.
- 6.Check the fuse feeding the circuit under load rather than by inspection.
- 7.Trace the harness between the module and the transmission, paying particular attention to sections near the exhaust and to any bracket the loom passes.
- 8.Back-probe for supply voltage at the connector and measure voltage drop on the ground path under load.
- 9.Establish which way the fault has gone by driving the car: a lockout that no longer operates is a different situation from one stuck engaged, and only the second needs prompt attention.
- 10.Recheck for the code after a drive cycle that includes the conditions skip shift operates in — light throttle, warm engine, low road speed — rather than assuming a cleared code means a completed repair.
Repair cost

This is one of the least expensive codes in either the P07xx or P08xx block. Cleaning or repairing a corroded connector is $90 to $250 including diagnosis. The skip shift solenoid itself is a $25 to $160 part with roughly half an hour to under two hours of labour depending on access from below, so about $120 to $400 fitted, and it is a realistic DIY job for anyone comfortable working under a vehicle on stands. A harness repair where wiring has chafed or melted near the exhaust runs $150 to $450. A fuse or a reseated connector found during diagnosis can be under $120 all in. The expensive branch — a failed module driver — is rare enough on this circuit that it should not be assumed without eliminating everything else first.
