P0824: Gear Lever Y Position Circuit Intermittent
The fore-and-aft sensing track wears where the lever spends its life, which is Drive — not at the extremes. That inverts the usual intuition: the reading is healthiest in Park, where everyone tests it, and worst at the one position the vehicle occupies for hours at a time.

What does P0824 mean?
This is the intermittent version of the long-axis fault. The module has caught the fore-and-aft position reading misbehaving and recovering, more than once, without it staying wrong long enough to be called a hard failure. Y is the channel that has to distinguish Park from Reverse from Neutral from Drive along one signal, so an intermittent here is a reading that keeps stepping briefly outside its window and coming back.
The thing that makes this code its own subject rather than a weaker P0822 is where the damage lives. The fore-and-aft channel has the longest travel in the shifter, and on a contacting sensor that means the longest wiper path. Wear does not accumulate evenly along it. It accumulates where the wiper sits, and the wiper sits in Drive — for the entire duration of every journey the vehicle has ever made. Park and the extremes of travel are visited briefly, twice a trip. So the worn spot is not at the end of the range where you might expect it, but in the middle, at the single most-used position.
That inverts how the fault presents and how it should be tested. A technician who plugs in with the vehicle parked is reading the healthiest part of the track and will see a textbook value. The fault lives at a position you cannot safely dwell at in the workshop without the vehicle being on a lift or securely restrained. It also explains the timing: the code appears after the car has been driven rather than at the moment of start-up, because the wiper has to be parked on the damaged section for the module to see anything wrong.
Thermal behaviour reinforces the same pattern. Contact resistance at a worn spot rises as the assembly warms through, so a fault that was absent on a cold morning shows up half an hour into a drive and is at its worst on a long run. Owners often describe the light coming on toward the end of a journey and being gone the following morning, which is exactly what a worn spot at the Drive position under a warm console produces.

- Sensor track worn at the Drive position where the wiper rests during every journey
- Contact resistance rising with temperature at a worn point on the fore-and-aft element
- Shift cable slightly out of adjustment, parking the lever near a window boundary
- Worn cable end bushing letting the resting position drift as the linkage warms
- Marginal terminal tension in the shifter connector, breaking under vibration or heat
- Chafed Y signal wire in the floor or console harness
- Corroded sensor ground going high resistance when warm
- Detent plate wear letting the lever sit slightly short of a position
- Liquid ingress that has left residue on part of the sensor track
- Shifter or sensor replaced without the calibration that centres each position window
Symptoms
- Check engine light appearing part-way into a drive and absent the next morning
- Cluster gear display flickering briefly while cruising in Drive
- Momentary loss of the reverse camera or reverse lights that corrects itself
- Occasional harsh or delayed engagement when selecting a gear
- Transmission dropping into a default gear briefly and recovering
- Fault more likely on long journeys and rare on short ones
- Everything reading perfectly on a scan tool with the vehicle parked
- Symptoms worse in hot weather or after the vehicle has been sitting in the sun
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read the freeze frame first and note the coolant temperature, run time and vehicle speed. A fault logged warm and moving rather than cold and stationary is the pattern this code usually shows.
- 2.Resist testing only in Park. That is the position with the least wear on the track and the one that will read correctly whatever the condition of the rest of the element.
- 3.With the vehicle safely restrained or on a lift, record the Y value with the lever held in Drive for an extended period rather than swept through quickly. The fault lives where the wiper rests, not where it passes.
- 4.Repeat the same observation once the vehicle is fully warmed. A value that was stable cold and unstable hot points at contact resistance at a worn point rather than at a broken wire.
- 5.Sweep the lever slowly through the full range while recording, and look for a dip or a step at one specific place rather than a general fault. A localised defect on an otherwise clean sweep identifies the worn spot.
- 6.Check the shift cable adjustment. A linkage that parks the lever near a window boundary turns ordinary track wear into an intermittent that better adjustment would absorb.
- 7.Wiggle-test the connector and the harness while warm, since a terminal that holds at room temperature can release once the console has heated.
- 8.Compare the Y ground reference against a known good ground under load and when warm. A ground that rises a few tenths of a volt when hot moves the whole channel.
- 9.After any repair, verify with an extended warm road test rather than a key cycle. This fault will not show itself in the first two minutes.

Finding it is the expensive part. Because the fault appears warm and under way, diagnosis with an extended recorded road test typically runs $120 to $250 rather than a flat $90 to $150. The repair depends on what the recording shows. A shift cable adjustment is $90 to $200 and genuinely resolves cases where wear and a marginal adjustment were combining. A connector or harness repair is $130 to $380. A worn sensor track is not repairable: where the sensor is a separate part, $90 to $300 plus 0.6 to 1.5 hours gives $200 to $550; where only the complete shifter assembly is available, $250 to $700 in parts plus 1 to 3 hours puts it at $450 to $1,000, plus $90 to $200 if calibration is required.
