P0825: Gear Lever Push-Pull Switch (Shift Anticipate)
The only input in the shifter that reports intention rather than position. It senses the driver's hand loading the lever before the lever has actually moved, giving the transmission a fraction of a second of warning, so when it fails the shifts get slower rather than wrong.

What does P0825 mean?
Everything else in this group of codes measures where the gear lever is. This one measures whether somebody is about to move it. The push-pull switch sits in the shifter and closes when the lever is pressed forward or pulled back — loaded against its detent, but not yet past it. That gives the transmission controller advance notice, typically a few hundred milliseconds, that a manual shift request is coming.
What the controller does with that warning is why the feature exists. A planetary automatic changes gear by releasing one clutch pack and applying another, and the apply side has to be filled with fluid before it can carry torque. Filling takes time. If the request and the fill start at the same moment, the shift is as quick as the hydraulics allow and no quicker. If the controller knows the request is coming, it can begin pre-charging the apply clutch while the driver's hand is still completing the movement, and the shift lands noticeably sooner. That is the whole purpose of shift anticipation: it does not change which gear you get, only how soon you get it.
Two consequences follow, and they are what make this code different from every other one in the block. First, the failure is a loss of sharpness rather than a loss of function. Manual mode still works, the requested gear still arrives, and a great many owners never notice anything at all before the light appears — the shifts simply feel a beat lazier than they used to. Second, this is the only member of the group that is a switch rather than a position sensor. There is no voltage to sweep and no map to compare against; it is open or it is closed, and the module judges it on whether it opens and closes in a pattern consistent with a human hand and with the position changes reported by the other channels.
That last point produces the code's most common non-fault cause. A driver who rests a hand on the lever while driving can load the switch continuously, and a switch reported closed for minutes at a time is indistinguishable from one stuck by contamination. It is worth asking about before condemning anything.

- Liquid ingress into the console reaching the switch contacts
- Switch signal disagreeing with the position channels because a position sensor is at fault
- Transmission control module input failure, rare and only concluded after measurement
Symptoms

- Slight hesitation between the paddle or lever request and the gear arriving

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask the driver whether they rest a hand on the gear lever while driving. A switch held closed for minutes at a time looks identical to a stuck one, and this question resolves a meaningful share of these codes at no cost.
- 2.Monitor the switch state live with nothing touching the lever. It should read open and stay open. An input already closed at rest is either stuck or shorted.
- 3.Load the lever gently forward and back without moving it past its detent, and confirm the switch changes state and returns cleanly each time. This is a two-state input, so what you are testing is the transition, not a value.
- 4.Compare the switch state against the position channels during a manual shift. The switch should close first and the position change should follow. A switch that closes without any subsequent movement, or movement with no preceding switch closure, tells you which side is lying.
- 5.Feel the lever mechanically. It should load against a definite spring and return crisply when released. A lever that stays loaded, or feels soft in one direction, is the fault regardless of what the meter reads.
- 6.Inspect around the lever base for debris and for evidence of anything spilled. A switch that cannot release is usually being physically prevented from doing so.
- 7.Check the detent for wear. A worn detent lets the lever sit partly loaded, which keeps the switch marginally closed and produces exactly this complaint.
- 8.Back-probe the switch circuit at the shifter connector and confirm continuity behaves as the live data suggests, to separate a mechanical switch fault from a wiring one.
- 9.Verify no position codes are stored alongside this one. If a position channel is also at fault, fix that first — the module may be objecting to the disagreement rather than to the switch.
Repair cost

The lowest outcome here is genuinely nothing but diagnostic time: $90 to $150 to establish that a resting hand or a piece of debris was the cause. A cleaning and adjustment is $90 to $250. A wiring or connector repair runs $130 to $380. Where the push-pull switch is available separately, expect $60 to $250 in parts plus 0.5 to 1.5 hours, giving $180 to $500. On many vehicles the switch is integral to the shifter and cannot be bought alone, which puts the job at $250 to $700 in parts plus 1 to 3 hours, or roughly $450 to $800. Given that the fault costs shift speed rather than function, it is reasonable to weigh that upper figure against how much the feature is worth to you.
