P0828: Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit High
The awkward member of the set, because on a shared switch line a high reading is what nothing-being-pressed looks like. That overlap is why the module needs a second kind of evidence before it will call this a fault, and why the search is for an absence or a foreign voltage rather than for a ground.

What does P0828 mean?
P0828 completes the up and down shift switch set, and it is the member whose name is most misleading. On this circuit the resting condition is already a high one: nothing is pressed, no switch is pulling the line anywhere, and the controller sees the full reference level. High is the normal idle state, not an obviously abnormal one.
That creates a problem the low-side code does not have. A reading below every defined step is instantly impossible and can be called a fault in an instant. A reading at the top of the range is only suspicious, so the module has to reach for something other than the voltage itself before it will store a code. Different manufacturers reach for different things — a level above the reference rail rather than at it, a request that ends without the module ever seeing the line return properly, a circuit resistance measurement taken while the line is supposed to be idle, or a check that runs when the driver has selected manual mode and the line refuses to move. The practical consequence is that P0828 tends to appear later and with less drama than its siblings, and often only after the feature has been used.
Once it does appear, it points somewhere very specific — and somewhere opposite to the low code. A short to ground is unwanted contact: a wire touching metal it should not touch. A high fault on this line is the reverse. It is an absence. A conductor has broken, a terminal has spread and lost grip on its pin, a connector has worked loose behind the column shroud, or the switch contacts no longer close well enough to move the line at all. There is nothing to find by looking for something touching; the thing to find is a join that has stopped joining, which is a different kind of search and rewards different technique.
The one exception is worth knowing because it is the expensive one. On designs where the code is set by a level above the reference rail rather than at it, the cause is not an open at all but a foreign voltage — battery positive from an adjacent circuit finding its way onto the signal wire through crushed insulation, a badly done accessory splice or water bridging two pins in a connector. That case matters out of proportion to how often it happens, because the signal input on a transmission control module is designed for a five volt world and is not always tolerant of twelve. If the measured level is genuinely above reference rather than sitting at it, stop and find the source before reconnecting anything, or the fault can end up costing a module instead of a wire.
Common causes
- Open circuit in the shared signal wire between the switch assembly and the module
- Connector unseated or partially latched behind the steering column shroud or console trim
- Terminal spread open so it no longer grips its mating pin, giving an intermittent open
- Switch contacts worn, oxidised or no longer closing well enough to move the line
- Broken conductor inside the clockspring on a paddle-shift vehicle
- Corroded ground return for the switch assembly, which raises the line rather than lowering it
- Battery voltage bleeding onto the signal wire from a damaged or badly spliced adjacent circuit
- Water in a connector bridging the signal pin to a powered pin
- Broken solder joint or dry crimp at a repair splice made during earlier work
- Transmission control module input failed open, which is uncommon and diagnosed last
Symptoms

- One direction working and the other doing nothing on some designs
- Code storing on a long drive and staying away during short trips

- Normal automatic shifting in Drive completely unaffected
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Establish first whether the line is sitting at the reference level or above it. Those are two different faults sharing one code, and everything that follows depends on which one you have.
- 2.If the reading is above reference, stop and treat it as a foreign voltage before doing anything else. Find where battery positive is reaching the signal wire, because leaving it connected risks the module input rather than just the feature.
- 3.If the reading is at reference, operate each switch while watching the value. A line that never moves at all confirms the open; a line that moves for one direction and not the other narrows the fault to that branch.
- 4.Back-probe at the module connector first, then at the switch connector, and compare. The half of the circuit where the reading changes character is the half containing the break.
- 5.Test the switch assembly on its own bench-style, checking that each contact actually closes rather than simply that the assembly is present. A switch that no longer makes good contact reads the same as a cut wire.
- 6.Check the ground return for the assembly as carefully as the signal wire. A corroded ground raises the whole circuit and produces exactly this code while every signal wire tests perfect.
- 7.Inspect connectors for spread or backed-out terminals rather than for damage. An open here is usually a terminal that has lost tension, not a wire that has visibly failed, and it will pass a tug test while failing under vibration.
- 8.On paddle-shift vehicles, work the steering through full lock while watching live data. An open inside the clockspring shows itself as a reading that changes with wheel angle and nothing else does that.
- 9.Confirm the repair by watching the parameter step cleanly to each defined level and back. A circuit that works but sits at a marginal level will set this code again in a few weeks.

Most of these end as connector or wiring work. A reseated connector or a re-tensioned terminal found on a diagnostic charge is $90 to $180 and no parts at all, which is genuinely the most common outcome. A located and repaired open in the harness runs $150 to $450 depending on whether the column shroud or the console has to come apart. Switch assembly replacement is $40 to $480 in parts plus 0.4 to 2.5 hours, giving roughly $180 to $700. A clockspring on a paddle-shift vehicle is $80 to $350 with 0.7 to 2 hours and airbag disarming, putting that at $250 to $780. Budget diagnosis of $90 to $170 separately and consider it well spent, since an intermittent open is the fault type most often mis-fixed by replacing the switch.
