P0849: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "B" Circuit Intermittent

This is the hardest fault in the family to catch, because it demands two incompatible test disciplines at once: an intermittent has to be provoked, and an event-gated channel can only be watched while the vehicle is being driven a particular way.

What does P0849 mean?

P0849 closes the second transmission pressure channel's code family. It says the module saw the signal drop out, jump or behave erratically, then recover — not a value stuck wrong, but a value that will not stay put. On most circuits that description points straight at a connection, and here it usually does too. What makes this particular code difficult is not the cause but the method needed to find it.

Every intermittent fault has the same fundamental requirement: you have to be watching at the moment it happens. The standard answer is to provoke it — move the harness while the circuit is live, warm the connector, flex the loom, tap the sensor, and watch for the signal to twitch. That works because on most circuits the signal exists continuously, so any disturbance shows up immediately.

This channel does not work that way. The "B" pressure tap generally monitors a circuit that only carries pressure during specific events: one clutch or band applying for a particular gear change, or the converter clutch locking up. Outside those moments there is nothing meaningful to read and nothing for a disturbance to disturb. So the usual provocation technique fails not because the fault is not there but because the circuit is not doing anything to interfere with.

That leaves a diagnosis that has to satisfy both requirements simultaneously — the vehicle must be driven in a way that repeatedly commands the event, while something is watching the signal fast enough to catch a dropout that may last a fraction of a second, and ideally while the harness is under the vibration and heat of real operation rather than the stillness of a workshop. In practice that means a road test with a second person operating the scan tool, a high sample rate rather than the default, and a route chosen to force the relevant shift or lock-up repeatedly. A single pass rarely does it.

This is why P0849 is the one code in this family where extended diagnostic time is genuinely cheaper than parts. The failure rate of the components is not high enough to justify replacing a sensor, then a harness, then a solenoid on a guess, and each of those on an internal component costs a pan-off job with fresh fluid. A data logger left recording over several days of the owner's ordinary driving will often capture in one commute what an hour in the workshop cannot, and shops that offer that are usually offering the cheaper route even though the invoice line looks larger.

The other habit worth adopting is reading the fault counters rather than only the code. Most modules record how many drive cycles the fault has appeared in and how many it has been absent for, and that history tells you whether the problem is worsening, stable, or already fixed by something that was disturbed during earlier work. A code that has not reappeared in twenty cycles is a different situation from one that appears every morning, and treating those two the same is how repairs get sold that were never needed.

  • Loose, spread or partly backed-out terminal in the transmission case connector
  • Chafed section of internal harness that only makes contact under vibration or load
  • Sensor or switch failing progressively, dropping out under heat and recovering when cool
  • Corrosion inside a connector that is bridged by fluid film and breaks contact when the film moves
  • Ground return that opens momentarily under torque reaction as the powertrain rocks on its mounts
  • Harness clip missing after earlier service, letting the loom swing against a rotating or hot component
  • Genuine hydraulic pressure that is briefly out of range during one specific shift rather than a wiring fault
  • Fluid level marginal, so the circuit occasionally aerates and the reading flickers
  • Damaged connector lock allowing the plug to walk loose over thousands of heat cycles

Symptoms

  • Check engine light that comes on, goes off again after a few days and returns weeks later
  • P0849 present as a history code with the vehicle currently behaving normally
  • Occasional harsh or flared shift that the driver cannot reproduce on request
  • Torque converter clutch dropping out momentarily at steady cruise
  • Brief limp mode that clears itself at the next engine start
  • Fault appearing more often on rough roads or after the transmission is fully warm
  • No stored freeze frame that matches the driver's description, because the event was too brief
  • Other transmission codes appearing sporadically alongside it where the internal harness is the cause

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read the fault counters, not just the code. How many cycles since it last appeared, and how many it has appeared in, tells you whether you are chasing an active fault, a worsening one or one that has already been disturbed back into working.
  2. 2.Ask the owner precisely when it happens — cold morning, motorway cruise, rough road, after a long climb. On an event-gated channel that answer defines the road test route and is worth more than any bench measurement.
  3. 3.Plan a road test rather than a bay test. This circuit is only live during the event it monitors, so provoking it while the vehicle sits still cannot work regardless of how thorough the wiggle test is.
  4. 4.Raise the scan tool sample rate before driving. A dropout in this family can last well under a second and will be averaged away entirely at a default logging interval.
  5. 5.Have a second person watch the data while the driver repeatedly commands the relevant shift or forces converter lock-up, and correlate any glitch with the exact moment of the event.
  6. 6.If a road test cannot reproduce it, fit a data logger and let the owner drive normally for several days. On this code that is usually cheaper than a single speculative internal repair.
  7. 7.Inspect the case connector before anything internal — back out the lock, check each terminal for spread or corrosion, and confirm the plug latches with a positive click rather than resting in place.
  8. 8.Check fluid level and condition, since a marginal level lets the circuit aerate intermittently and produces a genuinely fluctuating reading from healthy electronics.
  9. 9.Once a repair is made, verify by driving the same route that reproduced it and confirming the counters stay at zero across several cycles, rather than by clearing the code and handing the keys back.

Diagnosis dominates this code more than any other in the family. Expect $90 to $150 for a first look and $150 to $400 where a road test with logging or a multi-day data logger is needed, and understand that this is the cheaper path rather than an upsell. Repairing a connector terminal or an external harness section is $120 to $350. Replacing the pressure sensor or switch is $150 to $450 externally, or $350 to $800 where it sits inside the pan and the job includes fluid and a gasket. An internal harness replacement is $400 to $900 on the same pan-off labour. Where the fault is traced to an integrated electro-hydraulic control unit, the repair moves to $900 to $1,200 or more with programming. Most P0849 cases resolve at the connector end of that range once the fault is actually caught in the act.

Frequently asked questions

The light went out on its own. Is the problem gone?

Not necessarily, and the fault counters will tell you which it is. Modules turn the lamp off after a set number of consecutive drive cycles without the fault, and they keep the code in history along with a count of how long it has been quiet. If it has been absent for twenty or thirty cycles and nothing was touched, something genuinely changed — a connector that reseated as the powertrain moved, or a moisture path that dried out. If it has been absent for two or three, the lamp going out means nothing at all. Ask for those counters to be read before deciding the car is fine.

Why can't the shop just wiggle the wiring and find it?

Because on this channel there is usually nothing to disturb while the vehicle is standing still. The second pressure tap generally watches a circuit that is only pressurised during a specific shift or during converter lock-up. With the vehicle parked and idling, that circuit is quiet, the signal is not being evaluated, and a perfect wiggle test on a genuinely faulty connector produces a perfectly clean result. The fault has to be looked for while the vehicle is being driven in the way that commands the event, which takes two people or a logger and is simply a longer job than a bay test.

Should I just replace the sensor to be safe?

On this particular code that is usually a poor bet. Intermittent faults in this family land on connections more often than on the sensing element, and on many transmissions the sensor sits inside the pan, so replacing it speculatively costs a pan-off job with fresh fluid and a gasket whether or not it helps. If the fault then returns, you have spent most of the labour of the real repair on the wrong part. Paying for the diagnostic time to catch the fault happening is the cheaper route here, which is the opposite of the advice that makes sense on cheap, externally mounted sensors.

Can I keep driving with P0849?

Generally yes, and for most owners that is what happens by default because the car behaves normally most of the time. The badge says drivable short-term for that reason. Two cautions are worth knowing. First, if the fault is genuinely reporting a brief pressure problem rather than a wiring glitch, one clutch or band is momentarily slipping each time, and repeated slipping is cumulative heat damage rather than a one-off event. Second, an intermittent that is getting more frequent is telling you something is progressing, so keep track of how often the light appears. Weekly is a different situation from twice a year, and the counters make that measurable rather than a guess.
