What does P0861 mean?
A communication circuit is not a private wire between two devices. It is a shared line that several controllers connect to, each one taking turns to speak while the others listen. That architecture is what makes a low reading on this circuit behave so differently from a low reading on an ordinary sensor input.
On a sensor circuit, low means that one wire has found ground and one signal is affected. On a shared communication line, low means the whole line is being held down, and every device attached to it goes quiet at once — not because they have failed, but because a line stuck at ground has no room left to carry a message. A single defective controller with a shorted output stage can silence a network it is only one member of. So the fault named in the code, the gear shift module, may be nothing more than the first participant the powertrain module noticed was missing.
This is the reason the standard method here is subtraction rather than measurement. Reading voltage on a bus that is pulled down tells you it is pulled down and nothing about who is doing it, because every device shares the same reading. What does work is disconnecting nodes one at a time, with a meter on the line, and watching for the moment the voltage recovers. The device you unplugged immediately before the recovery is the culprit. It is an unglamorous procedure and it is the only one that reliably converges, which is why a workshop bill for this code is weighted towards labour rather than parts.
Two consequences follow from that, and both are worth knowing before authorising work. The first is that the gear shift module is a suspect rather than a conclusion, and replacing it on the strength of the code name alone is one of the more expensive guesses available on a modern transmission. The second is that a fault which silences a shared line usually announces itself in more than one place: codes stored across several modules, or a scan tool that cannot reach any of them. That pattern is a useful confirmation you are looking at a bus problem rather than a shift module problem.
The physical causes are the ordinary ones, and their locations follow the harness. A communication line runs the length of the vehicle, so it is exposed at every point where the loom passes through a bulkhead grommet, over a bracket, along a door sill, or into the console. Water is the recurring theme, because a wet connector on a shared line does not have to short hard to matter — a partial resistive path to ground is enough to pull the signal below the threshold the receivers need, and it will come and go with the weather in a way that a clean break never does.
The effect on the car is the same as the parent code, because the outcome does not depend on the electrical direction of the fault. With no trustworthy gear selection arriving, the transmission holds a safe strategy: a fixed gear, no shifting, sometimes a refusal to leave park or to crank.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm this is a bus problem before it is a module problem. Try to communicate with every controller on the vehicle; several unreachable at once is the signature of a line pulled down rather than a single failed device.
- 2.Measure the communication line voltage with the key on and note it, then keep the meter connected for the whole of the next step. The absolute number matters less than the moment it changes.
- 3.Disconnect nodes one at a time, watching that voltage. The module you unplugged immediately before the reading recovers is the one holding the line down, and no amount of static testing will identify it as quickly.
- 4.Do not replace the gear shift module on the strength of the code name. It is named because the powertrain module noticed it was silent, which is not the same as it being the cause.
- 5.Check for water in every shared connector along the harness run, since a resistive path to ground is enough to pull a bus below threshold without shorting it hard.
- 6.Ask what has been fitted to the car recently. Dashcams, trackers and alarms are frequently spliced into network wiring by installers who did not realise what they were tapping.
- 7.Inspect the harness at bulkhead grommets, sill trims and under the console for crush damage and chafe, concentrating on where trim has recently been removed.
- 8.Measure resistance across the bus with the key off and the battery disconnected, and compare it against the specification for the vehicle. A reading well below spec supports a short to ground.
- 9.Once the offending node is found, check its own power and ground before condemning it, because a module with a compromised ground can misbehave on the bus without being internally faulty.
- 10.Verify the repair by confirming every module communicates, then cycling through all gear positions and checking the display, the engagement and the live data agree.
