What does P0864 mean?
This is the one code in its family where checking wires is the wrong first move, and understanding why saves the whole diagnosis. For the powertrain control module to judge a message as out of range or poorly performing, it has to have received the message. Reception proves the conductors are joined, the terminals are making contact, the transmission control module has power and ground, and both ends are speaking the same protocol well enough to exchange data. All of that is now established. Reaching for a meter tests things this code has already confirmed.
What remains is content, timing and consistency. A range or performance complaint on a module conversation means one of three things: the values inside the messages are outside what the receiver considers possible, the messages are arriving too slowly or in the wrong order, or they contradict something the receiver can check independently. That last one is the most informative. The engine module knows engine speed, and it knows road speed, and from those and the current gear ratio it can work out roughly what the transmission ought to be reporting. When the transmission module's account of itself does not survive that arithmetic, this code is the result.
That leads to the awkward property of range and performance codes generally: the code is stored by the receiver, about the sender, so the location of the fault and the location of the complaint are different. The powertrain module raised the code and the powertrain module is almost never the problem. The useful technique is comparison. Open both modules' live data lists, find a value they both hold — gear, engine speed, vehicle speed, torque — and look at them side by side. Where the two disagree, you have found which module is telling the truth and which is not, and that is a far more direct route than testing anything.
The strongest single clue on this code is chronological rather than electrical. Messages that arrive perfectly but carry the wrong content are the classic signature of a software mismatch, and software mismatches are created by workshops rather than by wear. A replacement transmission control module that was never configured to this vehicle. A rebuilt or used gearbox with a different ratio set or a different solenoid arrangement to the one the engine module expects. A valve body swapped for a superseded part number. A module flashed with a calibration intended for a different model year. In every one of those cases the network is in perfect health and the two controllers are simply working from different assumptions. So the first question is not what to measure — it is what was done to this car recently, and whether the paperwork shows a configuration step that may have been skipped.
Because the conversation is still happening, the driving consequences are milder than the rest of the family. The transmission usually keeps shifting rather than locking into a single gear. What suffers is quality and judgement: shifts at the wrong moment, hunting between two gears, a torque converter that locks and unlocks repeatedly, an occasional flare or bump. A car that shifts badly rather than not at all is the normal presentation, and it is the reason this code is rated a step below its siblings.

Symptoms
- Check engine light with shifting that is wrong rather than absent
- Shifts happening at the wrong road speed or engine speed
- Hunting between two gears on a gradient or at steady throttle
- Torque converter locking and unlocking repeatedly, felt as a light shudder or surge
- Occasional flare between gears, where engine speed rises before the next gear takes
- Gear indicator briefly disagreeing with what the transmission is actually doing
- Fuel economy noticeably worse than usual with no other explanation
- Symptoms beginning immediately after transmission, valve body or module work
- Transmission live data available but containing values that do not match engine data
- Fault that comes and goes rather than being present continuously
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Do not start with wiring. This code proves the messages are arriving, which means the conductors, terminals, power and ground have all already passed, and testing them repeats work the code has done for you.
- 2.Ask what was done to the vehicle recently and get the paperwork. A module, transmission, valve body or software change without the matching configuration step is the leading cause and is established by conversation, not by measurement.
- 3.Verify the transmission control module is programmed to this vehicle identification number and carries the current calibration, and check the engine module's calibration level at the same time.
- 4.Open both modules' live data lists side by side and compare values they both hold — engine speed, vehicle speed, current gear, torque. The one that disagrees with physical reality identifies the liar.
- 5.Cross-check reported gear against engine speed and road speed using the known ratios. A gear the arithmetic does not support is the clearest single piece of evidence this code offers.
- 6.Confirm the transmission that is fitted matches the one the engine module is configured for, including ratio set and solenoid arrangement, particularly on any vehicle with a replacement gearbox.
- 7.Check the transmission speed sensors, since a sensor that is wrong rather than dead makes the module report false information accurately and produces exactly this complaint.
- 8.Look for aftermarket accessories spliced into or routed alongside the network wiring, because injected noise corrupts message content without preventing communication.
- 9.Check for manufacturer software updates for both modules before condemning either. Recalibrations are frequently issued for precisely this kind of mismatch.
- 10.Verify the repair with a road test that watches both modules' data agreeing through a full range of shifts, rather than by clearing the code and waiting for the lamp.

The cheapest and most common genuine fix here involves no parts at all. Programming or configuring a transmission control module to the vehicle, or updating a calibration, is typically $100 to $350 as a scan tool procedure, and where the code followed recent work the shop that did that work should be doing it. Diagnostic time to compare module data is $120 to $300. A transmission speed sensor is $150 to $400 fitted. Correcting a mismatched valve body or solenoid pack costs whatever the correct part costs plus the labour to fit it, commonly $400 to $1,000. A genuinely failed transmission control module with programming reaches $500 to $1,600. Because a wrong value is far more often a software problem than a hardware one on this code, be wary of any quote for a module that does not first account for what was changed on the vehicle recently.
