An open circuit inside a gearbox is rarely a broken wire. It is a terminal that has lost its grip on a connector that gets disturbed every time the pan comes off — which is why the first question on this code is who has been inside the transmission.

What does P0873 mean?

A high signal on a sensor circuit is what an open circuit looks like from the module's side. With nothing completing the path, the input floats up to the reference level and stays there. So the useful question is not what makes a voltage high — it is where a transmission circuit goes open, and that has a much more specific answer than most people expect.

It is almost never a wire snapped in the middle. The internal harness sits in fluid at a stable temperature, protected from water, salt and sunlight, and it does not flex the way an engine bay loom does. What it does have is connectors, and the important one passes through the case wall. That connector is unplugged and reconnected during pan services, filter changes, solenoid work and valve body repairs — the routine interventions a transmission receives over its life. Every one of those cycles wipes the terminals slightly, and terminals that have been mated and unmated enough times lose retention. A pin that has backed part-way out of its housing looks perfectly seated from the outside, passes a visual inspection, and is electrically open. This is a mechanical retention failure rather than a corrosion failure, which is why so many P0873 diagnoses come back from a careful terminal-by-terminal tug test rather than from a meter.

That gives the code a chronological signature. It appears disproportionately in the weeks following transmission work, and the first thing to establish is whether anyone has been inside the gearbox recently. It is not an accusation of bad workmanship — a connector can pass fifty cycles and fail on the fifty-first — but it points at an exact location, and an exact location is worth a great deal on a fault that is otherwise invisible.

The same logic explains the simplest cause of all: a sensor or switch that is not connected. An unplugged device sets this code faithfully, so P0873 is sometimes the electrical record of something never reconnected rather than of anything having failed. Check that before testing anything.

One further possibility applies where 'C' is an optional channel. Some transmissions are built in variants, only some of which carry a third pressure tap, and a control module configured for the wrong variant will look for an input that was never fitted and report it open permanently. That produces a P0873 that no amount of wiring work will cure, on a transmission with nothing whatever wrong with it. It is uncommon, but it is worth remembering on a vehicle with a replacement module or a swapped gearbox where the code has been present since the work was done and has never once cleared.

What the driver experiences is mild. The module discards the missing input, adopts a conservative shift schedule, suspends adaptive learning, and in most cases carries on. Firmer or later shifts are the usual report. The transmission is mechanically unaffected.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Ask whether the transmission has been worked on recently and get the detail. A pan drop, filter change, solenoid job or valve body repair all disturb the connector this code most often fails at, and the answer narrows the search to one component.
  2. 2.Confirm the sensor or switch is actually plugged in and fully latched before any testing. An unplugged device sets this code exactly, and it is a common outcome after service work.
  3. 3.Tug-test every terminal in the through-case connector individually. A pin that has backed out looks correctly seated and is electrically open, and no visual inspection will find it.
  4. 4.Back-probe the 'C' circuit at the module connector, then jumper the circuit to ground at the sensor end. If the reading drops, the wiring is continuous and the device or its connection is the fault.
  5. 5.Check the signal wire and its return for an open along the whole run, including the internal section between the device and the case connector.
  6. 6.Inspect the connector terminals for spreading and damage from repeated cycling, which is a mechanical wear pattern rather than corrosion and is treated by re-terminating rather than cleaning.
  7. 7.Establish whether the code has ever cleared. One that has been present continuously since a module or gearbox change suggests the module is configured for a variant that has no third pressure tap.
  8. 8.Verify the control module's configuration matches the transmission actually fitted, particularly on any vehicle with a replacement module or a swapped gearbox.
  9. 9.Check the internal harness for trapping or pinching if the pan comes off, since reassembly damage produces a hard open with an obvious cause once you can see it.
  10. 10.Verify the repair by confirming the channel reports a plausible value across a full road test, not merely by clearing the code and watching the lamp.

A connector that was never fully latched, or a device left unplugged after service, is resolved for the price of the diagnosis at $120 to $250 — and where the fault followed recent work, the workshop that did that work should be putting it right. Re-terminating a connector or replacing a pigtail is $150 to $450. A discrete 'C' sensor is $200 to $500 fitted; a switch that is one channel of a shared assembly behind the pan is $300 to $900. Replacing a damaged internal harness runs $350 to $1,100. A module configuration correction is $100 to $250 as a scan tool procedure. Because the inexpensive outcomes are also the common ones on this particular code, resist replacing the sensor before the connector has been tugged terminal by terminal.

Something was left disconnected, which is the first thing to check and costs nothing. Or the control module has been configured for a transmission variant that does not have a third pressure tap at all, so it is looking for an input that was never fitted and correctly reporting it as open. The second is uncommon, but it is worth checking on any vehicle with a replacement module or a swapped gearbox before parts are bought.

Can I keep driving with P0873?

Yes, short-term, which is what the badge means. The transmission is under full hydraulic control and is not slipping or overheating — the module has lost one measurement among several and has moved to a conservative shift schedule in response. Firmer or later shifts are the likely extent of it. Get it looked at rather than leaving it, though, since some vehicles escalate to a fixed gear if a second pressure input drops out, and the underlying cause here is often a five-minute connector fix that costs a great deal more attention once it has been ignored for a year.
