P0898: Transmission Control System MIL Request Circuit Low

What does P0898 mean?
On a vehicle with a separate transmission control module, the dashboard warning lamp does not belong to that module. The lamp is driven by the engine controller, so when the transmission module decides something is wrong it has to ask the engine controller to light it. On many designs that request travels down a dedicated wire between the two modules, and P0898 says the engine controller is watching that wire and seeing it held near ground at a moment when no request should be present.
The distinction worth holding onto is that this code describes the request path, not the transmission. Every other transmission code on this site tells you something about a clutch, a solenoid, a sensor or the fluid. This one tells you the two computers cannot conduct a conversation about warning lamps properly. The gearbox may be completely healthy. It may equally have a genuine fault it is trying and failing to announce, and you will not learn which from this code alone — you learn it by scanning the transmission module for its own stored codes, which is the first thing to do and costs nothing.
Why a dedicated wire exists at all is a piece of history that explains where this code turns up. Before the powertrain modules shared a high-speed data network, discrete hardwired lines were how one module told another something simple and urgent, and the lamp request was one of them. Plenty of vehicles still carry that architecture: heavier-duty applications, vehicles with a transmission supplied as a complete unit from a different manufacturer than the engine, and older designs where the network carries data but the lamp request was deliberately left as a hard wire so it survives a network failure. On a fully networked modern car the same request is a message on the bus, and a failure of it usually appears as a communication code instead. So P0898 is most common exactly where a physical wire runs between two boxes, and that wire, its two connectors and its routing are where the fault usually is.
"Low" on this circuit has a specific practical consequence that catches people out at inspection time. The receiving module generally holds the line high and considers it pulled low as the request. A wire chafed to ground, a wet connector, or a driver transistor that has failed shorted therefore looks exactly like a permanent request, and the visible symptom is a check engine light that is on with no drivability complaint of any kind and, frustratingly, sometimes no stored code that explains it. A vehicle in that state fails an emissions inspection on the lit lamp alone even though nothing is mechanically wrong with it.
The expensive mistake on this code is condemning a module. The circuit has two ends, and the wire between them is long, runs through the engine bay or under the vehicle, and passes through at least one bulkhead or case connector. A short to ground somewhere along that run is far more likely than an internal module failure, and it is the cheapest thing to prove — disconnect the line at both ends and measure it to ground with everything switched off. If the wire is clean in isolation, the fault is at one end and you have narrowed a four-figure guess down to a testable one.

- Failed input circuit inside the engine control module misreading the line
- Poor module ground causing an offset that reads as a low signal
- Repair or aftermarket wiring spliced into the powertrain harness
- Rodent damage to the harness section between the two modules
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with no drivability complaint at all

- Warning lamp that will not extinguish after unrelated repairs are completed
- Emissions or safety inspection failure purely on the lit lamp
- Transmission codes stored in the transmission module that never lit the lamp correctly

- Intermittent lamp illumination that correlates with rough roads or wet weather
- Normal shift quality and normal transmission behaviour throughout
- Other communication or module codes stored alongside it
- Lamp on immediately at key-on before the engine is started
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan every module, not just the engine controller, and record what the transmission module has stored on its own account before touching any wiring.
- 2.Treat any transmission code found there as the real complaint and this code as the reason it was reported badly.
- 3.Identify from wiring diagrams whether this vehicle uses a discrete MIL request wire or a network message, because the diagnosis is completely different for the two.
- 4.Locate both ends of the request circuit and inspect the connectors for corrosion, moisture and terminal damage before any electrical testing.
- 5.With the ignition off and the line disconnected at both modules, measure resistance from the wire to ground. A short here is the fault and no module is implicated.
- 6.If the wire is clean in isolation, reconnect the engine controller end only and check whether the line sits at its expected high level.
- 7.Wiggle-test the harness along its full run, particularly at bulkhead pass-throughs and near any bracket, while watching the signal live.
- 8.Check both module grounds for resistance and for corrosion at the body attachment, since a poor ground shifts every reading in the low direction.
- 9.Inspect any previous repair or aftermarket splice in the powertrain harness, which is a frequent source of a grounded conductor.
- 10.Only after the wire and both grounds have been proven good should a module driver be considered, and confirm it by measuring at the module pin rather than by substitution.
Repair cost
$90 – $900
The spread on this code is almost entirely about where the fault turns out to be. Diagnosis is $110 to $250 and is the money best spent, because the same symptom covers a $90 wiring repair and a $900 module. Repairing a chafed or grounded wire, including locating it, is typically $120 to $450 depending on how much of the harness has to be opened up and whether the damage is accessible. Connector repair with new terminals and a pigtail is $90 to $300. A transmission control module, where the internal driver has genuinely failed, is $400 to $1,400 including the programming that almost every module now requires, which is why proving the wire first matters so much. Note that this code does not by itself justify any transmission mechanical work — if a shop quotes internal transmission repair from this code alone, ask what else was found.
