P0903: Clutch Actuator Circuit High
The clutch actuator output is reading high. The module cannot tell an open circuit from a short to battery here, and on a connector that lives in transmission fluid the open is by far the more likely of the two.

What does P0903 mean?
A driver output that is not being commanded sits at its pulled-up level, and the module watches it there to confirm the circuit is intact. When it reads high at a moment when it should have been pulled down, the module cannot determine which of two situations it is in. Either the path to the actuator is broken, so nothing is completing the circuit, or something is holding the line up at battery voltage. Both leave the same evidence and the code covers both. The diagnostic value is in knowing that these two are not equally likely.
An open is far more probable, and the reason is where this particular connector has to live. On the great majority of automated manual and dual-clutch designs the clutch actuator sits on or inside the bell housing, and its wiring reaches it through a sealed pass-through in the transmission case, with gearbox fluid on the far side. That is one of the few connectors on any vehicle expected to hold back oil at temperature for the life of the car. When the seal ages, fluid migrates into the terminals and up the conductors, corrosion follows, and the connection opens — sometimes permanently, more often intermittently at first. A short to battery voltage on the same wire, by contrast, needs a powered conductor to have chafed onto a low-current signal path in a specific and uncommon way. Test for the open first.
The timing of the fault does a surprising amount of the diagnostic work for free, and it is worth asking the driver about before opening anything. A P0903 present with the ignition on and the engine not running is a hard open and can be measured immediately with a meter. One that only appears once the transmission is thoroughly hot points at a connection that separates with thermal expansion, or a winding that opens as it heats — the case pass-through is the usual suspect. One that only appears on rough roads or over speed bumps is the harness or a terminal that is no longer gripping, and it is found by wiggle-testing rather than by static measurement. Three quite different searches, chosen by a question that costs nothing.
There is a design detail behind why cars with this code usually arrive on a flatbed rather than in a ditch, and it is reassuring to understand. Clutch actuators on these transmissions are generally arranged so that loss of control returns the clutch to disengaged — spring-returned, or hydraulically vented — rather than leaving it clamped. That is a deliberate choice. A clutch left engaged with no way to release it would drag a stationary vehicle against its brakes and stall the engine at every stop; a clutch that releases simply disconnects the engine and lets the car roll to a halt. So the characteristic outcome of a hard P0903 is a vehicle that will not move, which is inconvenient and not dangerous, and there is no reason to try to nurse it home.
One check that gets skipped and should not be is the module end. A clutch actuator draws real current, and a driver output that has been feeding a failing or intermittently open load can itself be damaged. If the harness measures good and the actuator winding measures good, the module driver is the remaining candidate — but it should be confirmed by measuring at the module pin, not concluded by elimination. That matters because on many dual-clutch transmissions the module is the mechatronic unit, and reaching it means dropping fluid and opening the transmission. Ruling the actuator and the harness firmly in or out with a resistance check is what stops a very expensive component from being condemned on an assumption.

Symptoms

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask when the fault occurs — key-on and cold, only when hot, or only over bumps. Each answer points at a different search and the question costs nothing.
- 2.With the ignition on and the circuit disconnected at the module, check for battery voltage on the control wire to rule the short-to-power case in or out immediately.
- 3.Check continuity end to end on each conductor with the circuit disconnected at both ends, which is the more likely fault and the faster test.
- 4.Measure resistance across the actuator terminals. An open winding condemns the actuator; a normal reading points back at the harness.
- 5.Remove and inspect the transmission case pass-through connector for fluid, corrosion and seal condition, since this is the connector the design most exposes.
- 6.Check terminal tension against a neighbouring terminal, because a spread pin measures fine statically and opens under vibration.
- 7.For a hot-only fault, repeat the resistance measurements at operating temperature rather than cold, or the circuit will measure perfect.
- 8.For a rough-road fault, wiggle-test the harness along the bell housing while monitoring resistance rather than relying on a static reading.
- 9.Confirm the actuator connector is fully seated and latched, particularly if any work has been carried out in the area recently.
- 10.Only after harness and actuator have both measured good should the module driver be suspected, and prove it at the module pin before condemning a mechatronic unit.
Repair cost
$120 – $3,500
The cheap outcomes on this code are genuinely cheap and worth chasing properly. A connector repair with new terminals and a pigtail is $150 to $450. Repairing an open conductor, including locating it, is $150 to $500. Replacing a fluid-contaminated case pass-through connector runs $250 to $900 depending on how much has to come apart to reach it. Diagnosis is $130 to $300. A separately serviceable clutch actuator is $400 to $1,600 fitted. The top of the range applies where the actuator or the driver is inside a mechatronic assembly, at $1,800 to $3,500 with programming and clutch adaptation. Because that top figure is so much larger than the rest, the resistance check across the actuator and the continuity check along the harness are worth insisting on: they are quick, they are conclusive, and they are what keeps a connector fault from being invoiced as a control unit.
