P0904: Gate Select Position Circuit

What does P0904 mean?
Picture the gear lever of a manual car. It moves in two directions that do completely different jobs. Sliding it left and right chooses which pair of gears you are in reach of — first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, reverse. Pushing it forward or back then engages one of that pair. Those two motions are called select and shift, and every manual gearbox has an internal mechanism that performs both, whether a person is moving the lever or not.
An automated manual or dual-clutch transmission keeps that mechanism and replaces the person. An actuator does the sideways select motion, another does the fore-and-aft shift motion, and each needs a position sensor so the module knows where the mechanism is. P0904 concerns the circuit reporting the select axis — the sideways one, the choice of gate. That is a real physical distinction rather than a naming convention, and it is what makes this code diagnostically different from every other transmission position code on this site.
The distinction produces a symptom pattern nothing else produces. A hydraulic fault, a pressure problem or a failing solenoid in a conventional automatic degrades everything roughly equally — shifts get harsh, or slow, or slip, across the board. A gate select fault does something no hydraulic problem can do: it takes away some gears and leaves others working perfectly. A car that has third and fourth and nothing else, or that has every forward gear but cannot get reverse, is describing a problem on the select axis. If somebody tells you the car drives fine but will not reverse, they have narrowed the search to one mechanism before you have picked up a tool.
The second thing worth knowing is that this sensor is disturbed far more often than it fails. It is a position sensor with a taught reference, mounted to a housing that gets removed for other work — clutch replacement, actuator replacement, gearbox removal, mechatronic service. Loosen its bracket, disturb its shims, or reassemble the actuator housing a fraction out of position, and it now reports positions that no longer correspond to where the mechanism actually is. So the first question on a P0904 is not electrical at all: what was done to this car recently? A code that appears in the days after transmission work points at adjustment and reference values long before it points at a failed component.
The third useful property is unusual for a transmission sensor: on many designs the value can be checked against something you can physically observe. Where the actuator housing is externally accessible, watching the gate position value on a scan tool while the mechanism is moved, or while the module is commanded to select a different gate, tells you directly whether the sensor is reporting the truth. Most internal transmission faults have to be inferred; this one can often be witnessed. It is worth taking advantage of that before removing anything, because the answer — sensor lying, or mechanism not moving — decides everything that follows.

Symptoms

- Fault appearing shortly after clutch, actuator or gearbox work
- Other gate select or shift position codes stored alongside
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Establish which gears the vehicle can and cannot obtain before any testing, because losing a subset of gears is the fingerprint of a select-axis fault and rules a lot of other things out.
- 2.Ask what work has been done recently. This sensor is disturbed by transmission work far more often than it fails on its own.
- 3.Read live gate select position data and compare it against the gear the module is trying to reach.
- 4.Where the actuator housing is accessible, move the mechanism or command a gate change and watch whether the reported position follows, which shows directly whether the sensor is telling the truth.
- 5.Check the sensor supply and reference voltage at the connector, since a fault in the shared reference affects this sensor without anything being wrong with it.
- 6.Measure the signal circuit for opens and shorts back to the module, with the circuit disconnected at both ends.
- 7.Inspect the case pass-through connector for transmission fluid, corrosion and seal damage.
- 8.Check the sensor mounting, shims and alignment against the manufacturer's specification rather than assuming a bolted-up part is positioned correctly.
- 9.Inspect the selector shaft and its bushing for wear, since a worn shaft lets the mechanism sit outside the positions the sensor expects.
- 10.After any repair or adjustment, perform the manufacturer's position learning or adaptation procedure before returning the vehicle to service.

The single cheapest outcome here, and a common one, is an adjustment: where the sensor was disturbed by other work, correcting its position and running the learning procedure is $120 to $350 and needs no parts at all.
