What does P0926 mean?
P0926 is stored when the transmission control module reads the gear shift reverse actuator circuit below the voltage window it expects. Electrically the possibilities are the usual ones for a low fault: a conductor grounded somewhere it should not be, a winding shorting internally, or a joint with enough resistance to drag the circuit down. What makes this code genuinely different from its forward-side counterpart is not the fault list. It is how rarely the circuit is exercised.
A forward actuator circuit is under test more or less continuously, because the module is driving it every time the car changes gear. The reverse circuit is only monitored while it is being commanded, and for most drivers that is a few seconds off the driveway in the morning and a few seconds into a parking space at night. Everything about the diagnosis follows from that. An intermittent fault on a forward circuit reveals itself over a twenty-minute road test; the same fault on this circuit might need a week of ordinary driving to appear twice. A workshop road test that never once selects reverse has not tested this circuit at all, and a scan showing no current fault after such a test means nothing.
That gives the freeze frame unusual value here, and it is worth protecting. It is a record of the one moment the circuit was actually being driven when it failed — the transmission temperature, the ambient conditions, the voltage, how long the vehicle had been running. Clearing the code before reading it throws away information you may wait days to see again, and this is the code where that mistake actually costs time.
The testing approach that follows is deliberate repetition rather than driving. Because the vehicle will not generate reverse commands on its own schedule, the technician has to supply them: command the actuator repeatedly with a scan tool while the vehicle is stationary and safe, watching the circuit through each cycle and flexing the harness between commands. A hard short shows itself on the first command. A marginal fault — a partially chafed conductor that only touches when the loom is loaded, a terminal with barely enough tension left — may need twenty commands to catch, and twenty commands is a five-minute exercise you can control rather than a week of waiting you cannot. Anyone reporting no fault found on this code should be asked how many times they commanded the actuator, because that number, not the length of the road test, is what decides whether the circuit was tested.

- 3.Command the reverse actuator repeatedly with a scan tool while stationary rather than relying on a road test, since a road test may never exercise this circuit.
- 4.Count the commands and keep going; a marginal fault can take twenty cycles to appear where a hard short shows on the first.
- 5.Flex and load the harness between commands, concentrating on sections that move with the drivetrain.
- 6.Measure the circuit during a command rather than statically, and perform a voltage drop test on the supply and return under load.
- 7.Disconnect the actuator and repeat the commanded test on the harness alone to separate a wiring short from a shorted winding.
- 8.Measure winding resistance and compare against specification, then again after the actuator has been worked several times.
- 9.Inspect the connector face for corrosion and fluid intrusion before disturbing it, and photograph the pin face as found.
- 10.Treat a no-fault-found result as inconclusive unless the actuator was commanded many times, and say so on the job card.
