Signal voltage below the allowed minimum. This is the one code in the group most likely to leave you stationary rather than limping, because low pressure is the direction the transmission is designed to fail safe against — so the module refuses to engage anything at all.

What does P0934 mean?

P0934 is stored when the hydraulic pressure signal sits below the lowest voltage the module will accept — typically a fraction of a volt where the sensor should never go, because a pressure transducer at zero pressure still returns a defined offset rather than nothing. A reading beneath that offset is not a low pressure. It is an electrical impossibility, and the module treats it as such.

That distinction is why the electrical diagnosis here is narrow rather than broad. Three faults produce it and very little else does: the signal wire shorted to ground, the signal wire shorted to the sensor's own low-reference return, or a sensor that has failed internally to a short. Of those, the middle one is the most commonly missed, because the signal and the return are usually adjacent pins in the same small connector. A drop of hydraulic fluid or moisture bridging two terminals a couple of millimetres apart produces a textbook P0934 with a perfectly healthy sensor at the end of the wire.

The location makes that failure more likely than it sounds. On these units the sensor lives on or inside the actuator assembly at the transmission, and its connector sits in the bell housing region — hot, vibrating, and wetted by whatever weeps from the unit above it. Fluid tracking into a connector is a slow process, which is why this code often appears months after a small leak was noticed and dismissed as unimportant.

What separates P0934 from its high-side twin is the module's reaction, and it is disproportionate on purpose. Every clutch and every gear change in an automated manual or dual-clutch gearbox is held by stored hydraulic pressure. If the module cannot rule out that pressure is genuinely absent, it cannot rule out that a clutch it has just commanded will close halfway and slip. A half-closed clutch destroys itself quickly, so the safe response is to close the transmission down and select nothing. The car ends up in neutral at a standstill with the engine running perfectly and no drive available. Owners reasonably describe that as the transmission having failed, and it usually has not — the failure is a wire.

That also produces the awkward practical situation this code is known for. A vehicle that will not select a gear cannot be driven onto a ramp or into a workshop bay under its own power, and on many of these transmissions it cannot be pushed either, because a gearbox that has selected nothing is not necessarily in neutral in the sense that a tow truck needs. Establish that before arranging recovery rather than after the truck has arrived.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read live data for the reported pressure — a value at or below the sensor's zero-pressure offset is electrically impossible and points at the circuit, not at real pressure.
  2. 2.Unplug the sensor and check the signal voltage at the connector: if it rises to reference with the sensor out of circuit, the sensor is shorted internally.
  3. 3.If the signal stays low with the sensor unplugged, the short is in the harness between the connector and the module.
  4. 4.Inspect the connector under magnification for hydraulic fluid or moisture bridging the signal and return pins, which sit adjacent to one another.
  5. 5.Check the sensor reference voltage, since a collapsed reference drags the signal down and mimics a short.
  6. 6.Trace the harness along the bell housing looking for chafe against the case, the most common mechanical cause here.
  7. 7.Confirm whether the vehicle can be safely towed with the transmission unable to select a gear, before arranging recovery.
  8. 8.Look for any recent history of wading, jet washing or clutch work, all of which precede this fault regularly.
  9. 9.Dry and clean a contaminated connector, then retest before ordering a sensor, because the sensor is frequently innocent.
  10. 10.Check for a hydraulic leak from the actuator unit above the connector, as fluid tracking down the loom is what contaminates it in the first place.

Harness repair for a chafed or shorted section is $150 to $450. A separately supplied hydraulic pressure sensor is $150 to $700 fitted; where it is only available as part of the actuator or mechatronic unit, $1,200 to $2,600. Budget for recovery as well, because a vehicle that cannot select a gear may also not be safely flat-towable — confirm before booking a truck.

Does a low reading mean the pressure really is low?

Almost certainly not. A pressure transducer at zero pressure does not output zero volts — it outputs a defined low offset, typically a few tenths of a volt. This code is set by a signal below that offset, which is a voltage the sensor cannot produce no matter what the pressure does. So the reading is not a measurement of anything; it is a report that the circuit is compromised. That narrows the search to three things: the signal shorted to ground, the signal shorted to its own return, or a sensor shorted internally.

What is the cheap thing to check first?

The connector at the transmission. The signal pin and the low-reference pin sit next to each other, a couple of millimetres apart, in a connector that lives in the bell housing area where it gets hot, vibrated and wetted by anything weeping from the unit above. A film of hydraulic fluid or water bridging those two terminals produces this exact code with a perfectly good sensor on the end of the wire. Unplug it, look at it under a light, clean and dry it, and retest before ordering anything — particularly since on many of these units the sensor is not sold on its own.

Can I keep driving with P0934?

The badge says drivable because nothing here makes the vehicle unsafe to control, and if it will still select a gear you can drive it gently to a workshop. In practice, this is the code in the group most likely to leave you unable to move at all, and that usually happens at a standstill — a junction, a driveway, a car park. Do not plan a journey around it. If it has already refused to engage, do not have it flat-towed until you have confirmed that is safe for that gearbox, because a transmission that has selected nothing is not necessarily in a proper neutral.
