What does P0937 mean?

P0937 reports an electrical fault in the hydraulic oil temperature sensor circuit. The sensor watches the fluid that drives the actuators in an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission — the same circuit whose pressure the codes immediately before this one describe.

Temperature here does a specific job, and it is not the one people assume. The obvious guess is that it is a protection device, present so the module can warn about overheating. It does contribute to that, but its main function is compensation. Hydraulic oil is far more viscous when cold, so the same commanded actuator movement takes measurably longer at low temperature than at operating temperature. The module knows this and stretches its actuator timings accordingly, adjusting how long it energises a valve and how it blends a clutch. Lose the real temperature and it has to substitute a default. That default is a compromise value, so the transmission is now being controlled with timings that suit neither a cold gearbox nor a warm one.

That produces the complaint this code is actually known for, and it does not sound electrical at all. The car shifts badly for the first few miles from cold — jerky, slow, sometimes with a noticeable thump on the one-two change — and then settles down and behaves perfectly once everything is warm. Drivers describe it as a mechanical problem that goes away, workshops road-test it warm and find nothing, and the temperature circuit is nobody's first suspect. If a cold-only shift quality complaint arrives with this code stored, they are the same fault, not two.

There is a fluid fact worth stating plainly because it catches out owners and some workshops. On several designs — dry dual-clutch units in particular — the hydraulic fluid that operates the actuators is a completely separate fluid from the oil that lubricates the gears, with its own reservoir, its own specification and its own service requirement. A transmission fluid change does not necessarily touch it. So when an owner says the gearbox oil was done last year, that is not evidence about this circuit at all, and the level and condition of the hydraulic fluid still need checking on their own terms.

As an electrical fault, this is a thermistor circuit and behaves like every other one: two wires, a resistance that falls as temperature rises, and a module reading the voltage across a divider. The failure modes are correspondingly familiar — open circuits, shorts, and corroded connectors. The one trap is that a thermistor can drift to a plausible but wrong resistance rather than failing outright, and a plausible wrong reading sets no circuit code at all.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read the reported hydraulic oil temperature on a fully cold vehicle and compare it against ambient temperature, which should agree closely after an overnight stand.
  2. 2.Check whether the shift quality complaint is confined to cold running, because that pattern and this code are usually one fault rather than two.
  3. 3.Measure the sensor's resistance at a known temperature and compare it against the manufacturer's resistance-to-temperature table.
  4. 4.Establish whether this vehicle's hydraulic fluid is separate from the gear oil before accepting that a recent transmission service is relevant.
  5. 5.Check the hydraulic fluid level, since a low level can leave the sensor tip out of the fluid and produce nonsense readings.
  6. 6.Inspect the connector for corrosion and hydraulic fluid contamination, which are the two recurring causes in this location.
  7. 7.Perform a voltage drop test on the ground return, frequently shared with other transmission sensors.
  8. 8.Substitute a known resistance across the module input to confirm the module reads it correctly before condemning the module.
  9. 9.Trace the harness along the bell housing looking for chafe against the case.
  10. 10.After repair, allow the vehicle to cool fully and confirm the first cold start reads correctly — a warm retest proves nothing on this circuit.

A separately supplied hydraulic oil temperature sensor is $110 to $520 fitted, with the labour driven almost entirely by access rather than by the part. A hydraulic fluid service, where the design specifies one and the fluid is separate from the gear oil, is $150 to $400 and should be quoted separately rather than assumed to have been covered by an earlier transmission service.

Two things are worth doing while you wait for an appointment: drive gently until the gearbox has warmed up, since the poor timings are worst when the oil is coldest, and have the hydraulic fluid level checked, because a low level produces this code and is the cheap end of the possible answers.
