OBD-II trouble code
P0A1A: Generator Control Module
Application matters: Ford’s 2019-MY HEV/PHEV summary supplies the printed code name and a torque-estimation monitor example. Toyota T-SB-0003-21 Rev1 separately lists P0A1A on specified Prius/Prius v applications; Ford’s criteria are not Toyota test instructions.
The generator-control-module report is not an automatic controller replacement diagnosis. Ford’s monitor example and Toyota’s inverter repair-selection example require their own complete vehicle information.

A code alone cannot establish whether driving is safe. Stop safely for a red brake or oil-pressure warning, overheating, severe misfire, stalling, or impaired braking or steering, and follow the owner's manual. Restraints faults can reduce crash protection even when the vehicle runs normally.

What does P0A1A mean?
P0A1A names the generator control module. The name identifies the diagnostic subject, not a finding that a replaceable control unit is certainly defective. A technician must establish which monitor reported the code and what the full manufacturer record means on the installed system.
Ford’s 2019-model-year HEV/PHEV OBD summary provides one useful example. Its General Hybrid System table lists P0A1A and assesses discrepancies involving estimated and commanded generator or total torque. A control-module label can therefore be associated with a functional assessment; it should not be read as proof that the module is unresponsive. This Ford example does not supply the test criteria for a Toyota.
Toyota’s T-SB-0003-21 Rev1, dated February 16, 2023, lists P0A1A among the inverter-with-converter fault reports covered on specified 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v vehicles. Its repair path distinguishes the specified physical-damage case from an undamaged assembly. For the latter, inverter type, full DTC and information code determine component selection. The code name alone does not choose the MG control computer, generator, power module or complete assembly.
Keep P0A1A separate from P0A7A, which names generator inverter performance. Shared words do not make their monitor criteria or remedies identical. Preserve both reports if present and have the current diagnostic procedure establish their relationship; do not assume that replacing one named component resolves every companion fault.
This requires qualified hybrid diagnosis. Do not disconnect a service plug, open control or inverter covers, probe terminals or try a controller swap or reprogramming experiment. Record the warnings, complete scan and symptoms already observed. Follow the vehicle’s instructions and seek assistance for a stop warning, reduced power or unreliable propulsion rather than relying on a predicted operating fallback.
Possible causes
- A generator-control performance condition established by the actual manufacturer monitor
- An inverter/converter component condition selected through the matching Toyota diagnostic path
- Another confirmed system fault contributing to the generator-control report
Symptoms
- A check-engine or hybrid-system warning with P0A1A
- A generator-control fault recorded alongside other hybrid DTCs
- Reduced, abnormal or unavailable propulsion if the actual condition affects operation
Diagnostic steps
Save the full scan report, code status, and available freeze-frame data before clearing anything. Confirm the reporting module, any failure-type suffix, and the procedure for the exact vehicle. The steps below are an overview; use manufacturer specifications and safety procedures for testing.
- 1.Preserve the complete fault report, detail/information codes, event data and warnings. Describe recent work and symptoms without deliberately reproducing the condition.
- 2.Have a qualified technician identify the actual generator-control system and code-setting monitor. Do not substitute a conventional alternator or battery repair based on the word generator.
- 3.Keep manufacturer examples separate. Ford’s torque-estimation checks are not the Toyota Prius diagnostic criteria.
- 4.For a matching Toyota bulletin case, have the qualified repairer explain the damage branch or the inverter-type/DTC/information-code selection used for an undamaged assembly.
- 5.Authorize the demonstrated repair and any required setup, then obtain the prescribed verification. Leave HV access and electrical work to trained personnel; neither a trial flash nor clearing the code proves repair.
Repair cost

A trouble code alone does not price the repair. Ask the shop to identify the confirmed fault and itemize diagnosis, parts, labor, programming or calibration, and taxes.

DIY vs shop
A qualified shop is recommended because this can involve a high-voltage traction system that stays live with the car switched off and requires documented shutdown procedures, in-date insulating gloves, and specific training. Ask the technician what testing confirmed the repair.
