P2100: Throttle Actuator 'A' Control Motor Circuit/Open
The engine computer has lost the circuit to the electronic throttle body's motor — the wire is open or the motor isn't there electrically. The throttle can no longer be commanded, so the vehicle drops into a severe reduced-power mode.

What does P2100 mean?
On a drive-by-wire vehicle there is no cable between your foot and the throttle plate. The accelerator pedal is a sensor, and a small DC motor inside the electronic throttle body physically opens and closes the plate on command from the engine control module (ECM). P2100 sets when the ECM detects that the control circuit to that motor is open — it commands the motor and gets no electrical response at all, as though the wire were cut.
This is the most severe of the throttle actuator motor circuit codes. Where P2102 (circuit low) and P2103 (circuit high) describe a circuit that is present but at the wrong voltage, P2100 describes a circuit that is effectively not there. Since the ECM has no way to move the throttle plate, the throttle returns to its spring-loaded default position — a slightly open "limp home" angle that lets the engine idle and produce just enough power to creep. The result is a vehicle that starts and idles but will barely accelerate no matter how far you press the pedal, typically with a red or amber throttle warning alongside the check engine light.
The most common causes are, in order: the connector at the throttle body, the harness between the ECM and the throttle body, and the motor windings inside the throttle body itself. The throttle body connector lives in a hot, vibration-heavy part of the engine bay and its terminals are a frequent failure point, especially after a coolant leak or a pressure wash. Chafed wiring where the harness crosses a bracket is the next most common. An internally open motor winding is less common but does happen on high-mileage units.
There is a fast test that separates most of these. Unplug the throttle body connector and see how the code changes. If the code is P2100 with the throttle body plugged in and it stays P2100 unplugged, the fault is in the wiring or the ECM, because nothing changed when you removed the motor from the circuit. If unplugging changes the picture, the motor is contributing and belongs on the suspect list. Do not skip the throttle relearn after any repair — the ECM has to relearn the plate's closed position or you'll be left with an unstable idle and a code that comes right back.

- Open circuit in the wiring between the ECM and the throttle actuator motor
- Corroded, burnt, or backed-out terminals in the throttle body connector
- Connector left unplugged or not fully latched after intake or throttle body work
- Open motor winding inside the electronic throttle body
- Chafed or broken harness where it crosses a bracket or the engine cover
- Blown fuse feeding the throttle actuator circuit on vehicles that use one
- Rodent damage to the harness near the throttle body
- Failed ECM throttle driver (rare — verify wiring and the motor first)
Symptoms
- Check engine light plus a throttle or reduced-power warning
- Severe loss of power — the vehicle idles and creeps but will not accelerate
- Vehicle stuck in a forced limp mode with limited RPM
- Engine may idle high or unevenly at the throttle's default position
- Stalling on deceleration in some cases
- Cruise control disabled
- Companion throttle codes such as P2101, P2110, P2135 stored at the same time
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Record all codes and freeze frame before clearing anything, including any pedal position codes stored alongside this one.
- 2.Inspect the throttle body connector: check that it is fully latched, then unplug it and look for burnt, green, or backed-out terminals.
- 3.Check any fuse that feeds the throttle actuator circuit — some vehicles use a dedicated fuse, and a blown one produces exactly this code.
- 4.With the connector unplugged and the key off, measure resistance across the motor's two pins. An infinite reading confirms an open winding inside the throttle body.
- 5.Compare that reading to specification; typical electronic throttle motors read a low single-digit resistance, so anything near infinity is an open.
- 6.Check continuity end to end on both motor wires from the ECM connector to the throttle body connector with both ends unplugged.
- 7.Wiggle-test the harness while monitoring, paying attention to chafe points at brackets and where the loom crosses the cylinder head.
- 8.After any repair, perform the manufacturer's throttle relearn procedure and confirm commanded throttle position tracks actual position in live data.
