P0044: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1, Sensor 3)
The module saw voltage on the sensor 3 heater control circuit that it should have been holding down. Because this circuit runs the length of the underbody, the list of things it can be shorted to is nothing like the list available to an engine-bay sensor.

What does P0044 mean?
On nearly all modern designs the heater in an oxygen sensor is fed permanently from a fuse and switched on its ground side by the module. The module therefore expects to see the control wire sitting near battery voltage when it is not driving and pulled close to zero when it is. P0044 stores when that wire reads high at a moment it should have been low — the module tried to pull the circuit down and something else was holding it up.
That description covers two very different conditions, and one measurement separates them. Unplug the sensor and read the control wire again. If the voltage disappears, the path back to power was through the sensor itself and the element or its internal connection is at fault. If the voltage is still there with nothing connected, the circuit is picking up power from somewhere in the harness, and no sensor will fix it.
The reason that second case deserves particular attention here is geography. An engine-bay sensor's harness runs alongside other engine-bay circuits, which are few and mostly switched with the ignition. The sensor 3 lead does not live there. It runs rearward through the body loom, and for a long stretch it shares tape, clips, and grommets with circuits that no upstream sensor is ever bundled against: the fuel pump feed, rear lighting and brake light circuits, the licence plate lamps, and — on any vehicle fitted with a hitch — trailer wiring. Several of those are permanently live or are live only in specific conditions, and that gives this code a diagnostic tell that its Bank 1 sensor 1 equivalent cannot offer. If the fault appears only when the brake pedal is pressed, only with the lights on, or only when a trailer plug is connected, the chafe point is where those two looms are bundled together, and you have just narrowed a car-length search down to a few inches.
Aftermarket trailer wiring deserves its own line. It is installed at exactly the point in the vehicle where this sensor's harness passes, it is frequently spliced with insulation-displacement connectors that let water in, and it carries battery voltage. A P0044 that arrived within a few months of a towbar being fitted is a wiring fault until proven otherwise.
One caution about repeat repairs. A control wire held at battery voltage is sitting across the module's low-side driver, and that driver is not built to survive it indefinitely. Clearing the code and handing the car back to see whether it returns is an expensive habit on this code, because each cycle is more time the driver spends being stressed. Find the short before energising the circuit again.
The engine drives normally throughout — this sensor does not participate in fuel control — but the monitors that depend on it will not complete, and that is what fails an inspection.
Common causes
- Short to battery voltage where the sensor harness is bundled with rear lighting, brake light, or licence plate circuits
- Chafe against aftermarket trailer wiring installed at the rear of the vehicle
- Water ingress into an insulation-displacement splice, bridging a live circuit to the heater control wire
- Internal short inside the sensor between the heater and its supply side
- Damaged or crushed body loom where it passes a grommet, hanger, or crossmember
- Corrosion inside an under-floor inline connector bridging adjacent terminals
- Repair or accessory wiring tapped into the wrong circuit at the rear of the vehicle
- Damage during exhaust, fuel tank, or towbar work
- Failed low-side driver in the module, which is often the consequence of a short left live rather than the original cause
Symptoms
- Check engine light with no change in how the engine drives
- Readiness monitors that will not complete before an inspection
- Fault that appears only with the brake pedal pressed, the lights on, or a trailer connected
- Fault that appears or worsens after driving through standing water
- Heater control circuit reading battery voltage in live data when the module reports it as commanded on
- Other rear-of-vehicle electrical oddities stored alongside, such as lighting or fuel pump faults
- Fault first noticed shortly after a towbar, trailer harness, or rear accessory was fitted
- Emissions test failure on the stored code and on incomplete monitors
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Unplug the sensor and read the control wire again with the key on. Voltage still present means the source is in the harness; voltage gone means the path was through the sensor.
- 2.Ask what else has to be switched on for the code to appear. Test with the brake pedal pressed, the lights on, and any trailer plug connected, and note which condition brings it back.
- 3.Check whether a towbar or rear accessory has been fitted, and inspect any splices made during that work first. Insulation-displacement connectors at the rear of a vehicle are a standing cause of this code.
- 4.Trace the body loom along the underbody and inspect every point where it passes a grommet, hanger, heat shield, or crossmember for crushing and chafe.
- 5.Open the under-floor inline connectors and look for corrosion bridging adjacent terminals, which produces the same reading as a chafe without any visible damage to the loom.
- 6.Check the oxygen sensor heater fuse and its shared circuits, since a fault that involves more than one sensor points at the feed rather than at one lead.
- 7.Where the fault is intermittent, use the freeze frame to establish what the vehicle was doing when it set, rather than trying to reproduce it on a lift.
- 8.Do not clear and release the vehicle to see whether the code returns. A control wire sitting at battery voltage is stressing the module's driver every time the circuit is live.
- 9.After repair, run a full drive cycle and confirm the dependent monitors complete before treating the job as finished.

Most genuine P0044 repairs are wiring rather than parts. Locating and repairing a short in the under-floor loom runs $100 to $350, and the spread is almost entirely diagnostic time — a fault that only appears with the brake lights on is found in twenty minutes, and one with no trigger condition can take hours to trace along the length of the vehicle. Correcting a badly installed trailer harness is $80 to $250. A replacement sensor is $130 to $360 fitted and is the right answer only when unplugging the sensor makes the voltage disappear. If the module's driver has been damaged by a short left live, the bill moves into module territory, which is the reason not to clear and retest repeatedly on this code.
