What does P0064 mean?
P0064 records that the heater circuit for the third sensor on Bank 2 stayed at a higher voltage than the module expected while it was trying to control it.
The word "high" invites an obvious conclusion — something is feeding the circuit that should not be — and that conclusion is sometimes right. But on a circuit the module drives, high is more often a symptom of nothing at all being connected. Most heater outputs are monitored through a pull-up: the module raises the line, then pulls it down and expects the load to sink the current. If the heater element is open, or the wire to it is broken, or the connector is unlatched, the module pulls and nothing responds. The line stays up, and the module reports the only thing it can observe, which is a voltage that will not come down. An open circuit and a short to power look remarkably similar from the module's side, and separating them is the first useful step rather than an afterthought.
The second thing worth reading is timing, and this is where P0064 is genuinely different from its counterparts further forward. Rear oxygen sensor harness runs share their route with the exhaust system, the fuel tank straps, the rear suspension and the heat shields. All of that hardware gets unbolted, moved, lifted and clamped back down during ordinary repair work. When a rear sensor circuit goes high within days or weeks of a garage visit, the productive assumption is not that insulation slowly wore through — it is that a wire was trapped when something was bolted back. A harness pinched under an exhaust clamp, caught between a heat shield and the floor pan, squeezed by a hanger, or crushed by a tank strap will either open or contact metal, and either outcome can produce this code.
That distinction changes the search. Gradual chafe develops at rubbing points and shows itself as a shiny worn patch you can find by running the harness through your fingers. A pinch injury sits precisely where a fastener was tightened, is often invisible until you release that fastener, and will not be found by feel because the harness looks normal on both sides of it. So on a recently serviced vehicle, the fastest route is to work the job backwards: find out what was done, get the vehicle on a lift, and inspect at every point the harness passes a clamp, strap, hanger or shield that was disturbed.
Where no recent work explains it, the ordinary causes still apply — an open heater element, a connector that has lost a terminal, water intrusion at the most exposed plug on the vehicle, or damaged insulation contacting a live circuit. Confirming which one requires taking the sensor out of the equation: disconnect it and see whether the circuit behaves differently. If the reading is unchanged with the sensor unplugged, the sensor is not the cause.
Driveability is unaffected. This sensor is a monitoring device, so the engine runs normally and the consequence of leaving the fault in place is an incomplete monitor and a failed inspection.
Common causes
- Harness pinched under an exhaust clamp, heat shield, hanger or fuel tank strap during recent under-car work
- Open heater element inside the sensor, leaving the module's pull-up with nothing to sink current
- Broken wire or backed-out terminal in the rear harness, producing an open the module reports as high
- Connector left unlatched after service, so the circuit is open even though the plug looks fitted
- Damaged insulation allowing the heater wire to contact a switched or constant power circuit
- Water intrusion and corrosion having eaten through a terminal at the most exposed connector on the vehicle
- Incorrect or miswired aftermarket sensor with a different pin arrangement
- Failed heater driver in the engine module, which is uncommon and confirmed only after the wiring is cleared
Symptoms

- Occasional companion codes on nearby circuits sharing the same disturbed harness section
- No hesitation, no misfire and no change in fuel economy
- Nothing audible or visible from the driver's seat
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Establish the vehicle's recent service history first. If anything under the rear of the car has been unbolted lately, treat this as a pinched or trapped wire until proven otherwise.
- 2.Put the vehicle on a lift and inspect the harness at every clamp, hanger, strap and heat shield that was disturbed, releasing fasteners where necessary — a pinch is invisible until the pressure is off.
- 3.Disconnect the sensor and observe whether the circuit reading changes. No change means the sensor is not responsible and the fault is in the harness or the module.
- 4.Check that the connector is fully latched and that no terminal has backed out of the housing, since an unlatched plug produces the same reading as a failed element.
- 5.Measure heater element resistance across the sensor's two heater pins. An open reading confirms the element; a normal reading sends you back to the wiring.
- 6.Test the heater feed wire for continuity from the module end to the sensor end to identify a break, and note where in the run it lies.
- 7.With the circuit disconnected at both ends, check the heater wire for any voltage present — voltage on a disconnected wire proves a short to power.
- 8.Inspect the connector for corrosion and moisture, which at this position is the second most common cause after physical damage.
- 9.Check whether the heater fuse has blown or is blowing repeatedly, which points at a hard short rather than an open.
- 10.After repair, secure the harness clear of everything that moves or gets clamped, then drive a full warm-up cycle and confirm the monitors complete.

Repairing a pinched section of the rear harness typically runs $120 to $320, most of it labour spent locating the injury rather than fixing it. A short to power that has damaged multiple wires can reach $380.
